Let’s talk about what would happen if you went two weeks with less than five hours of sleep each night.
Getting seven to eight hours of sleep is the best way to support a healthy body. But many people aren’t getting enough quality sleep.
There are so many health benefits of sleep. This is when our bodies recover, burn fat, and detoxify the most.
Here are the top side effects of not getting enough sleep:
• Fatigue
• Mood changes
• Poor cognitive function (with memory, focus, concentration)
• Sympathetic hyperactivity
• An increased risk of cardiovascular problems, stroke, and diabetes
• Weight gain
• Fatty liver
• Immune system impairment
• Poor recovery from injury, stress, or exercise
If you have sleep apnea or you're a heavy snorer, you may experience an imbalance of oxygen and CO2, which can cause poor sleep.
Other potential severe side effects of sleep apnea can include:
• Brain atrophy
• Increased risk of cancer, cardiovascular incidents, stroke, and diabetes
There are many different natural things you can try for sleep apnea. Check out my other videos for more information.
What to do if you’re not getting enough sleep:
1. Take a nap
2. Keep you’re room cool (between 60 to 68 degrees Fahrenheit) and leave your window open if possible
3. Try to keep the humidity in your room at 50%
4. Turn off all electronics in your room when you’re sleeping
5. Don’t overeat or undereat in the evening, and make sure to consume enough protein
6. Don’t eat too late in the evening
7. As it gets dark, start dimming the lights and avoiding blue light

Ask any over the road truck driver. Just because we are mandated to take a 10 hour break doesn't mean we get solid sleep. Parking in a noisy area, parking so your bed is at an odd angle, too hot to sleep, too cold to sleep, parking in a bad area and sleeping with gun in hand are just a few examples.

True story Doc, I worked the graveyard shift for 15 years. Lived on 5-6 hour sleep from Mon-Fri and would stay awake all day Friday to take care of my kids and reset my circadian system to be awake in the day on weekends. A Sunday evening nap before work and it was back to the weekly grind. During a check up a few years later I told my story to a cardiologist, he looked at me and said “You should be dead!” He had apparently tried that shift for two years and wanted to quit being a physician. Thanks for everything you do to keep us informed Doc!

I sleep about 6 hours a night. When i wake up, I'm not tired/sleepy. Im not moody, or depressed. I feel all around just fine. When i was a kid i slept 8 hrs all the time and was always tired. I think the younger you are, the more sleep you need. Heres a lil tip for emf around you when you sleep, put your phone in airplane mode so its not searching for a signal all the time. Those text messages and calls can wait. If you need the phone because you might be expecting a emergency call, put it across the room. Our phones put off an enormous amount of emf especially since most of them are 5G now, which is another serious health consequence. Something i don't recall this channel ever mentioning.

Mad how you mention 5g. I don't know anything about that and WiFi signals, but I've noticed that since I started to put my phone on aeroplane mode with WiFi on (incase of emergency calls etc) my quality of sleep improved. Either a mad coincidence or there's something to the lack of 5g as you allude to.

I meditate, I do the Tibetan rites, walk my 10,000 steps and I’m vegetarian. I take D3, vitamins, iodine etc. If I force myself to sleep more I have headaches. I go to sleep when I’m tired and I wake up without an alarm. Yes, there are a few of us out there. Thank you 🙏🏼

S is for, you guessed it, SLEEP! Glad to have a D.O. doctor at work that doesn't push drugs for this, and drugs for that. The MD & DO doctors where my wife works a pushers. 😝 Thanks Dr. Berg! However, if I go back to bed and fall back to sleep, I will get maybe two more hours of sleep, but I'll feel so groggy and cranky for the rest of the day. I've been doing keto and OMAD (most days) for about 6 months now. Not sure how that factors in, but before I started living this way, my sleep wasn't great either.

I went 5 years getting far less than that. Going to bed by ten hoping that would push me to at least before sunrise before waking up. I had zero trouble falling asleep, but 1-2 hours later, I would be wide awake and only catch a bit before time to get up. I developed systolic hypertension, calcium in the arteries for starters. It all culminated with very sporadic chest pains and a soft blockage of the LAD, and cysts covered adrenal glands. After a stent and I started keto and supplementation to fight calcium buildup (k-2 and magnesium among others) my sleep has went back to more my usual 6-8 hrs of total "black out" and waking naturally just as before dawn rises. How do I know it is natural waking? For me, that is I start have mild video like dreams as I come up. It's all gentle.

So I got diagnosed with sleep apnea and was asked if I was tired all the time. I didn’t think I was and they told me I was getting about 3 hours of actual sleep per night. I ended up getting a sleep apnea mouth piece as it was the cheapest attempt to resolve the issue and now I sleep 7 & 1/2 hours every night. I wake up feeling rested and energized and also I no longer wake up with migraines/headaches. My digestive track has also gotten much better. It changed my life by actuality sleeping the correct amount of time that my body needed to rest. I suffer from migraines and they’re almost gone which I take nurtec if they ever come. I think there’s so many more problems due to lack of sleep than we actually know about and with time and research it will only discover more issues that are currently unknown 🤔

A quality sleep involve quantity as time is require for your body to enter and complete a full sleep cycle. What more important is when you sleep. Sleeping for 8 hours from 2am is vastly different then 8 hours of sleep from 10pm. Both is 8 hours of sleep... However, one is beneficial to your health while the other will destroy it. Also, not getting enough hours every nights will never be healthy. Just because your body is used to it and you're awake and functioning after only 5 hours of sleep doesn't mean you're healthy. You're surviving but not thriving.

I’m 57 with five adult children and for many years I didn’t get much sleep and often I just couldn’t go to sleep or would wake up many times a night and able to get into a deep sleep. Over the past three years I’ve done lots of research on it and finally am at a point where I can sleep 7 to 9 hours a night and I actually feel good. When I didn’t get much sleep, I couldn’t hardly even drive to the grocery store and back without falling asleep while driving. Long trips required that I pull over several times and take naps. I was always foggy, brained and pretty grumpy but tried not to be. I understand being in a position where it’s impossible to work in the time to get enough sleep. I was that way for years. It really took a toll on my health in many ways.

Great-Grandmother, at nearly 104, never exceeded 5 hours of sleep daily. Grandfather, now 81, also slept just 4-5 hours. My father and I follow suit, sleeping 5-6 hours a day. What's the implication? Each body varies, considering sleep quality (REM) and diet. Even 8 hours may result in tiredness, low spirits, and lacking drive. It's crucial to discover what works best for you. The way I see this. Don't spend 1/3rd of your life sleeping. Become physically fit, get rid of stress so that your body requires the minimal amount of time to regenerate itself.

There are genetic freaks (anomalies) that require less sleep. It’s not a flex-you did nothing to earn it. It’s simply your genetics-be grateful instead of projecting the false narrative that it’s a “life choice” to enjoy more of life that could lead someone ELSE down the path of ill health. Not sure if there’s a relation but a lot of politicians have this anomaly and a whole lot of them are sociopaths.

My 90 year old grandpa Jack Ward only slept 6 hours a night. He probably wouldn't have made it to 90 if he slept over 6hrs a night. Majority of elderly don't sleep much

in the military on deployment you are only getting (at least my platoon) in the Marines we only got 4 hours of sleep, and sometimes it's in the middle of the day and you can't seem to get to sleep because it's super hot out.

Hey Dr. Berg, for those nights when we need a little extra help going to sleep, would you recommend taking melatonin, or do you prefer people to take valerian root instead? Why? Thanks for any advice!

this is probably not related to doc eric’s video but still about sleep. i have ALWAYS been a morning person and i love to work as early in the morning cause then i’d get to finish before 6pm or even earlier. i have never tried working on a night shift before and for the first time in my life i am going to be starting my new job second week of december and its from 9pm to 6am. the one thing that really scares me the most is not the job but how my body is going to react and adjust on my new sleep schedule. at this point i’m not even sure if i’ll even be able to survive this job due to the working hours. the reason why i accepted the job in the first place was because of the offer and career growth. i just pray that my body can easily adapt to this new body clock 😭

Ive been experimenting with this. I stopped all exercise in the last 2 weeks. Weighing at night and in the morning. I now get 7 or more hours of sleep per night and feel so much better. I was getting up early to do walking but turns out I really needed that extra hour of sleep. The nights I get 5 hours sleep or less I weigh more in the morning. Rather then just at the end of the day which is normal.

I have done this and ended up with sepsis in hospital for 2 weeks from relapse of cmv from childhood. I worked days, had class in evening, and worked very hard on my house which needed much work. Your body responds. Sleep and rest are most important of all things.

I had trouble getting more than 6 hours sleep, I had very little, often no deep sleep, and also an elevated resting heart rate. This gave me many of the symptoms Dr Berg described in the video. Credit where due, my long time friend noticed that my worst symptoms coincided with increased consumption of vinegar. She suggested a trial of periods of cutting out vinegar, including pickles, from my diet and noting the results. Her observation proved correct, and the trial has been repeated three times now with a strong correlation of cause and effect. I don't have the resources to do more than a n = 1 trial, so Dr Berg, if you could carry out proper testing you may be able to establish a link.

Thanks a lot for all the gloom by describing ALL the issues I’ve had for several years. I got rid of all the meds and though I feel better I don’t sleep better. It’s worse. And a Chris pain issue started as well. I’ve done all the suggestions and I don’t sleep better. I always hope to get 6 hrs , lucky to get 5 but mostly get 4. It’s like my whole body shifted into a different mode which I have no control over. I don’t hear any help in this video just the dire results I can’t avoid I guess since I have all the results described without going back to the md and taking all the meds again. Which is worse? Getting poisoned slowly over time or living with a shortened lifespan thru the effects of lack of enough sleep? I don’t think there is one size fits all doc.
