“If Drake goes independent, the music industry is done.” or at least that’s what Steve Stoute, a veteran record label exec and former manager of Nas, Mary J. Blige and producer of work by Mariah Carey, Will Smith and Gwen Stefani seems to think. You see - a few months ago, in late July, Steve Stoute had something to say about Drake during a panel discussion at SelectCon, a sports, music and finance entrepreneurship conference. Collaborating with Russ, who recently became an independent artist after choosing not to renew his record deal after it ran its course, the two industry veterans talked first about the pros and cons of staying independent or signing to a label. Russ said: “if Drake posts a picture on the ‘Gram of his new album, link in bio - f-k a link in bio, “new album out” - and he was fully independent, Drake will make $10 million a week for f-ing 60 weeks.” Steve Stoute added: “I said this before, Drake is about to come out in the next six months, Drake is about to get the biggest bag in the history of the music business by far. Both A and B, they don’t want that to happen. Because the day that happens, they might as well close the business down.”
You see - over the last decade or two, really since the birth of major streaming services, the logistics of distributing music have become massively less complicated than in the past - without the complications of manufacturing, distributing and selling physical music media, a large piece of the utility of the record label is lost. And with it being the case it’s almost always more profitable to own your own masters rather than to allow a record label to possess them, the list of successful independent musicians and independent labels has been growing rapidly for the last decade. Hell, it’s become almost a requirement in hip hop to blow up before you sign - after all, FL Studio only costs $200 and if XXXTentacion could get billions of streams after recording most of his early music with a Blue Snowball, why can’t just anyone do it? Well, to be honest, it remains the case that the vast majority - more than 95% of mainstream musicians are signed to major labels, despite clearly available financial incentives to hold your own masters and distribute your own music. So while Drake may be able to use his massive gravitational pull as the best selling artist of the streaming era to go independent and still make a killing, is Steven Stoute spitting facts when he claims that Drake going independent would cause a mass exodus of artists leaving their record labels? Or does he just want to promote independent artistry to prospective clients, being the CEO of UnitedMasters, a company that provides advertising, brand partnerships and distribution to independent artists? Let’s look at some actual numbers and facts about the independent music industry and hopefully learn a bit about when independent artists can profit - and when they don’t.

If Drake went independent the industry would first try to destroy him. When that doesn’t work, Drake would be known and considered a leader to a new generation of artists no longer in need of a record label. He would both be an icon and literally a game changer.

The leader of a new generation of artists that aren't in need of a label? Idk if he would be the "leader" so much as he would inspire more people to be indie. There are already indie artists that inspire others. Not saying if he did, that said inspiration wont be a big shift but its already happening.

@Black God he didn't know but he still touched her *without her consent* and once she told him that she was 17yo he still kissed her on the lips *without her consent* . That's not the only thing tho, he was texting Millie Bobby Brown when she was 14yo, she said he gave her advice on boys and when asked to elaborate, she said, "That stays in the DM's". He also took her out on two dinner dates and was texting her about how he "missed her so much". He was texting Billie Eilish when she was still 17yo, he dated a girl who was 18yo but they met when she was 16yo, so he either groomed her or he was having sex with her while she still underaged. He has a *history with underaged girls* . I'm not tryna paint him out to be that, that's what he is but Drake fans don't want to see it, like R Kelly fans didn't want to see it. He might not be sadistic, kidnapping girls and peeing on them but he definitely has shown a pattern of inappropriate behavior with underaged girls.

@@DannewK Unless he corporatizes himself and gets managers, financial managers, lawyers etcetera, because the leg work the label does would be so incredibly hard as an independent, he'd be risking his own money as capital, contacting and paying artists independently too. He also samples a lot, he'd have to have a team of well paid executive lawyers as an independent to purchase copyright sanctions and contracts, which is a lot easier when your label has the connections, credibility and power to gain copyright. Basically yes his income and percentages of profits would increase, but so would his expenses, work, and he'd probably miss out on some features he would easily get with a label. Drake is textbook labelled artist, huge features, mass releases and a large network of wealth associated with him. He wouldn't survive independent, at least continuing his current music.

Drake is really close to being independent. His music is completely under his own label OVO Sound now, ever since the release of 2018's Scorpion got him out of his deal with Young Money / Cash Money (YMCMB). He then licenses this music out to Republic Records. The thing is, OVO Sound is still under Warner Music and thus it isn't an independent label. If OVO was spun off into its own company, Drake would be an independent artist who just uses Republic Records as a distribution and marketing service.

This whole video boils down to how you define indie really. Collaborating doesn't mean you're not indie. And as an indie artist, you can still work with mainstream artists as well. If you have a core fan bass that's totally against mainstream it might not be the best decision to do that. To me being indie just means you own the rights to your music, or partial rights with your collaborators. Finding collabs where I live is hard. I live in a little suburban down with a bunch of snobby people now. I'd almost be better off as an artist going back to where I'm from but I left for a reason and I'm not trying to go backwards in life. I just keep the faith that I'll find some people to work with eventually. It's all I really can do at this point. But I do have all the gear to make professional radio ready content, not that you can't do that with a computer now, but I like hardware for some things. It just has a different feel and for me it's better.

I wasn’t aware there were multiple definitions. I understood independent to mean “not signed to a major label”. Working with a “mainstream”/signed artist has no bearing on that. There are indie artists who don’t own their masters too, due to having been signed prior for example. Which is why now there’s a lot of talk about artists buying/receiving their masters back.

Hey so to chime in a little bit, but Steve Stouts isn’t just saying that Labels would be over because Drake would persuade other artists to be independent. He’s also saying Labels bank on the profitability of their big acts to pay for their other acts, most acts aren’t successful after lose so much money. So losing the actual bank and profit to the majority of their artists would be crippling.

He signed a 10 million album distribution deal only at the age of 20 and was only going up from there if he had lived on 😔 x talks about being independent in his rare/underrated interview with pigeons n planes that he did while he was on the jail phone while going viral in early 2017

@@NostalgicHearts idk X was the newest/most innovative artist we've seen in the genre/game in the last decade at such a young age as well pretty appealing to people who use the internet/ his generation & to anyone who liked real music too. also got kendrick lamars cosign on his debut album. he was doing much more than well before he passed, he had debut #1 spot all while owning his masters/being independent you also have to think about that he only had a year and a half at most in the spotlight thats from jan 2017 to the middle of 2018 when he got killed, if he had lived for a couple more months he would've moved to Cali after dealing with the outcome of his court case & if he went to jail he would've only got more famous, and if he beat it he would've been less black balled by the industry (which he didnt even need, the music would've spoke for itself) and would've made better music thats more universal while in California living his best life he dreamed for as a artist. If X had lived on he would've been revolutionary by the messages he left behind and by reading the tweets which is like a journal he always spoke stuff into existence. Anyways, if X had lived on for a year or even a few more at least he would've remained on the top of his generation/class as well as competing with everyone else (uzi admitted he looked as x as competition, kanye admired x probably wouldve worked with him x would be doing ye a favor in providing good music lol, probably work with the weeknd n just grow as a artist / leader of a generation, but sadly that never happened because he didnt move militant since he was just a 20 yo who didnt account for the outside as much (really wish he was more paranoid or just a homebody after hearing on podcast from his home engineer that x would go to the movies with his engineer and mom with no security to then get a mob of fans surrounding around him like thats not safe or even fun)

@@NostalgicHearts Definitely lol what your describing sounds like juice world more than X. Anybody that thought that probably didnt give x a true listen and just wrote him off due to ignorance, his debut album got co signed by kendrick lamar when it dropped telling ppl to play it and that he had it on repeat(got co signs from many artists before his death like asap rocky, joey badass, jaden smith) & many more after that were scared to cosign him because of his public image/ cancel culture . Also remember on joe buddens podcast he talked about when him and his girl listened to 17 when it dropped while they were on vacation crying to it because they could relate/connect to some of the tracks on 17 and joe said something like after listening he knew x wasnt a act/gimmick. X was a divisive artist to the masses/sheep but majority of the people supported him or ignored him he just had SJWs bashing him as well, the way media portrayed like many didnt like him but that was only a small crowd compared to the giant one he amassed way before his death solely off of using the internet as a tool, you have to remember he went viral off his mugshot and was dealing with court/the law clearing his name until his death while making hits, sadly he didnt get to live on to prove the world how much he changed/evolved from what they tried portraying him in the media kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZHmkpNOtocmed9I.html "Time consumes the image, Difference changing in the distance Time consumes our image" anyways LLJ man sorry for overexplaining, x was the epitome of misunderstood as a artist in his own words but was understood by many that had to capacity to not be narrow minded anyways have a good day

And now they want a piece of everything you do outside of the music part ie 360. Am I incorrect in my assessment?

Would Drake still be able to keep his deal with Apple if he goes independent? Or is it possible that Drake is going to not renew his record deal and instead Have his music drop on OVO and OVO signs a deal with Apple? I'm just rambling idk but I can see the whole apple thing going big
