For powertrain changes here is my prediction. The 6.7 Cummins diesel isn't going anywhere. There haven't been any rumors or leaks indicating that Cummins is working on a replacement for it. And Ram would lose a LOT of business by moving away from Cummins. We'll most likely see a 8-10 speed trans mated to it. It's time for the old 6 speed's to go away. On the gas side of things I think we'll finally see the 6.4 Hemi go away. This is where it gets interesting. Cummins has said they've been working on a 6.7 gas engine. Could that be the replacement for the 6.4 Hemi? I hope so, and it makes sense considering GM and Ford have both moved to larger displacement gas engines in their trucks. I don't think people want the 3.0 I6-TT in a HD truck.

That 3.0 i6 engine might be pretty stressed if it's used in a HD truck. That will affect the reliability negatively. Nobody wants their work truck broken down on the side of the road or always in the shop when they need it the most.

An 7 or 8 speed would be great! I think that is probably the thing most people would want and some more power to close the gap would be awesome. Some hands free/ assisted driving while towing on the interstate would be on my wishlist as well.

Updated cab to the 1500, new diesel numbers, some form of a replacement for the 6.4l and some towing tech. Maybe a new trim level because people can’t already decide from the hundreds of existing trims. The fuel cell idea, while interesting, isn’t really a commercial option as hydrogen is expensive and availability is limited.

You mentioned cab clearance with fifth wheels ford vs ram. My 2004 Dodge with shorter bed clears my fifth wheel no problem. My 2021 Ford has a nice dent in the cab from the same fifth wheel. The dimension to observe is not bed length but rather distance from back of cab to centerline of rear axle where the kingpin should reside.

The HD Ram will definitely move to the DT cab. They will need to add a Regular Cab (that will show up on the 1500 as well) DT doesn’t have a Mega Cab, but it’s competitive with Ford and GM cabs. I think Mega Cab is done. I think they’ll migrate to a bigger 6ft bed. They COULD offer the PowerWagon with a Crew/5ft bed configuration to keep the wheel base a little shorter. I think the HD Rebel will be upgraded to match the Temor and ZR2. I think the 6.4 Hemi/8speed will continue for now. They could surprise us with a tall-deck stroker to better match Ford gassers. The Cummins will finally get an 8spd, either from ZF (the 8HP MD) or the supposed Aisin MD 8spd. I think we’ll see a HFC Promaster before an alternative fuel HD Ram, although H2 Combustion isn’t out of the question with tech from the Cummins Agnostic Engine.

1500 cab, Cummins 6.7 diesel and gas (Cummins next gen 6.7 is fuel agnostic). 8-10 speed transmission. Don’t waste time developing a new V8 gas engine when Cummins has already done it on the 6.7. The 6.7 diesel is held back by its transmission. Lastly, Ram needs significant payload increases, if that means trashing the coil springs then so be it.

As you and others have mentioned, i struggle to achieve EPA numbers with turbocharged gas😂 engines. But my Chevy 3.0 diesel and the v 6 and v 8 trucks i have had often excee🎉ded epa highway estimates. Currently have a 222 Powerboost and an 04 Ranger in excellent condition with a strong but thirsty 4.0 v 6 and 4.10 gears. It is extremely reliable. I bought the powerboost used, and it's a great truck in xlt higb. Very comfortable and powered my house for three extended power outages. But wanting a truck camper so that might get traded for a 3500 Chevy Gas or diesel. They handle and ride fairly well. All these new half ton engines dont appeal to me yet as reliability is a key determination. I will hold off for awhile to see what the early adooters say about them. And i will trade my Powerboost before it comes out of warrenty.

Greetings from Australia. We have finally had access to a limited Ram range that is converted to right hand drive locally. I recently upgraded to a larger caravan with a 4000kg Max or GTM weight. The current crop of crew cab 4x4 mini trucks all have a 3500kg tow limit. I thought the offering from Ram Trucks Australia eg A well equipped Laramie 2500 Cummins 6.7 with up to 4500kg tow capacity on a standard license would be perfect. But when I look at the load carrying capacity of around 900kg empty from Ram and then factor basic add ons such as a front bull bar, tow hitch, full diesel tank, passengers and say the caravan tow ball of hitch download weight of 350 to 400kg, it goes over the load limit before I add the necessary item to place in the tray bed. In Australia the only way around it is to spend more money on weight and licence upgrades to be viable. It boils down to the heavy stock or tare weight of the vehicle limits its usefulness.

I believe it would boost sales, and both those power trains have such a strong following you would see migration too, Ram. I agree with you that Ram has to increase cab size, same as Ford, it would make a big difference. ON a side note, they need a new Gas, hydrogen, battery motor as well I'm talking about 8.0 gas with turbo or supercharger for real power options.

I like that they're finally adressing the transmissions in the HDs. The 68rfe has been the weakest link of that drivetrain. Ask me how I know. Unfortunately now just as we might get an offering from ZF, the graphite compacted block is showing signs of early failures. They've shaved off so much material and windowed so much of that block that there have been reports of bearing failures because the block is distorting under load. All to save 80 pounds off a block.

The problem I see (besides the exuberant prices) would be these manufacturers chasing a beauty pageant trophy. Of course we want a nice looking vehicle, but I don't need something so elegant I won't take it off blacktop. I want a truck to be capable, but I don't need the best numbers, I need reliability. For me, I have a a 20' trailer and 44hp tractor as my heaviest load. I'm not buying a truck that will strain to make this load, I base my purchase on handling the job with ease. Therefore, I don't care if brand A has 10 more ft lbs of torque, both will perform.

I hear you guys say ford is up to 1200 lbs of torque or whatever and 40,000 tow capacity and I roll my eyes through the back of my skull. It’s unnecessary for 99.9 percent of people. Hot shots are mostly at 26,000 lbs to maxed for regulations. Let’s see a company make the “unsexy” choice of making a truck where you actually make your main focus efficency and reliability then in turn cost. These are by far the three things that I most interested in. I drive a 2019 Ram Cummins I tow 7,000-10,000 lbs everyday I have it all stock. If I could change anything it would be fuel mileage and reliability. I will be selling this truck when my third part warranty is up. I have about 3 years left and 50,000 ish miles. I have owned the truck for about 2 years and put about 33,000 miles in it. Right after I got it at 86,000 miles it needed a new transmission (covered by Ram warranty) $9000 charge to Ram, $1600 emissions repair (100$ deductible for me) $10,000 bill from dealer shop for , three transmission leaks, two oil leaks, CV Joint, EGR problem, turbo actuator control and a partridge in a pear tree (another $100 out of my pocket. I will milk this warranty for all it’s worth and wouldn’t dare own this truck without one. I spent $4400 on the ENDURANCE warranty (their highest one) the truck was in the 50 ish thousand dollars. If I did t have these repairs covered I would be out over $20,000 this is not including oil changes, brakes, tires, fuel filters, oil filters other standard maintenance. Not to mention massive fuel pump recall. I will either be buying an older Chevy/gmc or a newer truck with warranty again after this. New trucks are scary expensive cost of ownership while be freakishly expensive from the start.

I think the biggest weak link as far as their power train is is that slush box six-speed. Maybe throw a little extra horsepower at it but frankly I think the biggest Achilles heel is their transmission is just so slow and lack of gears. As far as the cab yeah I agree they should have just put it on the DT platform, and for crying out loud give us a telescoping steering wheel that is ridiculous 70 80 $90,000 truck doesn't have a telescoping steering wheel. Secretly hoping they throw a manual in it. Extremely unlikely but one can hope. I did go out and test drive a nice Laramie but after the test drive I didn't see anything that truck offered that my Ford didn't already have or was better at especially the power it was a eye opener. I think in the looks department it's a better looking truck than the Ford and I don't know what it is about Chevy's seats but God they are the worst probably the most uncomfortable seats I've ever sat in.

Hydrogen will most likely be used for construction machines, farm machines, and semi trucks. You would most likely have hydrogen made just for those industries; the closest the average Joe would see a hydrogen pump would be at a truck stop. As someone who works in heavy civil, I highly doubt we [construction] will go battery electric any time soon as the logistics and power requirements are too big a hurdle with current battery technology. However, I could see hydrogen taking off in the next 15 or so years assuming the industry moves on one accord.

First of all you did not touch on the gas option. For some reason as of 2023 you could not get the 6.4 BGE Hemi V8 in the Limited trim levels. And for 2024 you can no longer get it in the MegaCab. There are rumors of a brand new Hemi V8. That Hurricane HO will NOT cut it in the HDs. Next is the transmission. Will the Cummins get a more modern transmission vs the two current 6 speed options? Now. regarding size, one of the current selling points is that the current CC will fit in a garage. The Ford and GM CCs will not fit in most garages. Yes they should go with true 5th gen cab. Single cab, CC AND MegaCab. And I am talking about a MegaCab version of the 5th gen cab. I do a lot of camping and tow a 30' travel trailer. Been to many campgrounds and the RAM is one of the big choices. Especially the 3500 dually for fifth wheels. And the vast majority are MegaCabs. Why? Because when you are towing long distances and you have a family or you are taking guests, you want that back seat to be as comfortable and roomie as possible. The MegaCab is perfect for this. Not only having leg room, but also room behind the seat. Allows you to recline the seat. This is a major point to differentiate them from Ford and GM. You can not just go with what everyone else has. You need something different to stand out!
