What Will It Take To Break Carbon Wheels?

Спорт

Can a freestyle mountain biker destroy carbon wheels? That’s right, we’ve called on Blake from GMBN to test some Winspace carbon wheels to the extreme. We’ve got two sets: the Lún MEGA road wheelset and the Lún GRAPID gravel wheels. Will they be able to survive the rocks, roots and jumps of a mountain bike park? This is the Winspace wheel breaking challenge: the rematch!

The problem with all these Chinese carbon bike & parts manufacturers is "trust"! So they've sent GCN a set of wheels and said these are our new wheels look how great they are, go try and break them! So GCN do this film and show how strong the wheels are and how much damage the they can take! Brilliant! BUT! Are they the same wheels that the consumer is going to get in the post after parting with his/her hard earned cash? Who knows? I certainly would not send £2k to a Chinese bank account and hope I'm not getting ripped off! £2k can get me great set of wheels that are EU/GB compliant and I know where I stand if warranty issues arise!

@@R-Dub-Ya exactly that is what puts me off buying from Asia/China. I hope your wheels have been OK since you sorted them out yourself. I don't mind buying chinese "budget" carbon parts if they're being sold through a British retailer. Wiggle/CRC "Prime" carbon products are cheap Chinese but i know if something goes wrong I can deal with them and they generally have a good warranty. It's the dealing direct bit that I have issues with. To be honest I'm not a Carbon fan. Good Aluminium or Steel will always trump cheap carbon. I feel too I'm getting what I pay for. 👍

hitting a curb headon at speed is harder on a wheel then what Blake is doing here. If you do that with a car, its wheels probably explode too. I broke my MTB enduro wheel when I landed on the edge of a curb at about 15 mph and at low psi.

@@veganpotterthevegan Aluminum is far easier to repair. Of course it can't always be repaired, but it's better and cheaper to repair an aluminum wheel vs a carbon. If you're damaging aluminum wheels that badly, you might want to check your tire pressures first. My guess is, if you're running too low, you're going to crack a carbon wheel catastrophically and end up on a Friday Pinkbike video, if you know what I mean.

Blake is amazing riding with no rear tire on that trail, but we've seen him do that before! Carbon can obviously be stiffer and lighter, but the major drawback to carbon fiber structures is that you really cannot see or observe the micro failures of delamination that are taking place before visual (and massive) structural failure. Ollie knows that to do this properly you need non-destrucutive testing to e done after the first tests, and then again after to last one to see the (probable) gradual degradation and likely failure modes rom the last run without tires. Great fun though!

It's great to see Blake here on GCN doing such things 😀. However, I think you could destroy them quicker and more severally on a section of rough pavé. We've seen wheels being destroyed in the forest of Arenberg when a tire blew off in this year's Paris-Roubaix and from personal experience I can say arguably one of the best phone holders for mountain bikes failed on me once whilst riding a road bike on cobblestone descend.

I've been thinking about getting carbon wheels for my CX bike ever since Road Bike Party 3 and its two puncture-only production (accdg to Sam Pilgrim and the rest of the gang)... I think I may do so for a planned gravel bike build.

Here in the Philippines, the most go to budget Air fork is SR Suntour Epixon and that fork is always used more than what it is intended. Its an XC fork but there's a provision for 140mm adjustment. Please test that blake in 140mm, we have high hopes on you!

Insane... I got the hyper x wheels for my checkpoint and yeah i love those after seeing your torcher test on them i was sold when I was debating wheel sets.. but they have proven themselves well ... It thinking when i get my health benefit reset with work ill be buying a pair of these... As i have aluminum Dynamo wheel from hunt but hey i like the idea of lightening my bike more ... You guys should use these with a bike packing load for the more ultimate test 🤪

An interesting torture test, but what would really make it matter is how it does under more normal trials over a long time. Would de-lamination occur after a few years or more of rugged trails, potholes and etc? Most people expect their wheels to last many years....

Kudos to the carbon wheels. The only thing I am always concerned about when it comes to carbon (except for the price tag) is that you can not asses if they are still ok just by looking at it from the outside. Their might be internal damage and then something breaks out of nowhere. Are there thoughts about testing those wheels more by x-raying them?
