Matthews already blocks loads of shots so at least he doesn't have to teach him. In fact the Domi-Matthews-Bertuzzi line if it stays would likely fit Berube well. Maybe he can get Nylander to track back. I think he is capable of learning how to play a 200 ft game and then he'll be a complete player,

The only player who doesnt respond to tough love is mitch. Matthews so very rarely needs a kick in the pants, he's one of the better self-motivators in the league. Willy fully admits that he occasionally needs one, and always accepts his with humilty, whether its a demotion or public call out. Every time keefe ever walked back a critique of a core player, it was because mitch and/or his camp whined to shanny. As a player, i mostly love mitch. He's a great penalty killer and a top 3 passer/set-up guy in the league. Hes already a top 10 all-time leaf. But, he still tries to make a highlight play when all we need is the safe play, at the most crucial of times. He has done next to nothing to increase his strength in 8 years. He cant handle hard physical hockey because hes just not physically built for it. And he whines to the refs more than anyone on the team. His body language when the team is doing bad or when he makes a mistake is brutal. He hasnt matured physically or mentally, and he is still trying to play london knight hockey in the NHL. And as much as he loves being a toronto maple leaf, i dont think its healthy for his mental health. There is a reason we've never really been able to draw hometown kids in as FAs, and why very few GMs made a point of drafting them. Its so much pressure playing at home, especially the 7 canadian cites. Most NHLers have the friends and families become fans of their team once drafted. Hometown guys, theyre family n friends are already dyed-in-the-wool, deeply invested fans. Mitch isnt just playing for hus boyhood team, hes playing for paul's boyhood team too. He gets out of t.o. he will get the chance to reach his full potential. I dont think he can get there playing at home though.

Thank you for this comment. I was literally saying exactly this to my father in law today. Matthews and Nylander will thrive under a coach like Berube. He’s not an asshole, but he isn’t afraid to tell you when you screwed up. Mitch though it seems always has a chip on his shoulder, and god help it if someone tells him he made a mistake or isn’t doing his part. We all saw that on the bench when Nylander was roasting him. If Marner is still here by next season, I think sparks will fly. And if you think for a second that Berube is above healthy scratching an 11 million dollar forward, guess again.

Answer from a DH Blues fan... When, "Cheif", came into the head Blues coaching job, Blues fans, who known what type of coach/ person he was, were very excited because not only did we know that he could get the players to comit to their on ice assignments, whilst at the same time he seemed to captivate the locker room and get the guys to play for each other. That group became very tight. The 2019 Blues became a relentless, hard on the puck, team style that won the SC, and only Berube was able to bring that type of styled game out of that team. No question about it, he's the right man for the job. All he needs is just the guys to commit 💯 for him. Edit: He doesnt have Steve Ott right next to him anymore, though!? Lol😮

Blues fan here...I would advise patience. I personally think the team makeup still needs to be addressed, otherwise (as Steve as said before) they will still be a really good team but never great. In 2018-2019 for the Blues, our expectations at the start that season were very high, and it was evident to everyone on the team that they were severely underperforming. Things didn't change much at first - it was only until Binnington came up that the team started to turn it around. The buy-in began with a strong win after going 5-5. My advice for the Leafs fans would be to not set your expectations until you've seen about a month of the season, and don't be surprised if the record isn't great at first. Give it time.

However, my worry if i was a Leaf's fan is not is he as good as people think. But instead will the higher ups left him coach his style and allow him to hold players accountable...the core four. If they ..higher ups...tie his hands and dont let him call the players out ..then it wont matter what coach you have. Shanny and the higher ups just remind me a bit to much of Jerry Jones. When either of the Core-4 prima donnas doesn’t play according to Berube’s lofty expectations, he will complain to Shanny and after a few complaints, Berube will be shown the exit door just like Iron Mike Babcock!

Lofty expectations? The expectation is the cup. One team wins it per year why can't the leafs with all that talent at least be in the mix.

Yep and ore reason why Shannahan is the problem and needs to go. The core 4 don't deliver and play soft and don't set a good tone or culture and if the president doesn't let the coach change that then it's not the coach that needs to go it's the president.

statistically not a single coach has won the stanley cup with the maple leafs since 1967, should we just never hire a new coach based on this stat? lmao the reason coaches tend not to win cups with multiple teams is because coaches that win cups historically stay with those teams for the remainder of their career. do you think if cooper decides to swap to a different contender he’ll suddenly lose all chance of winning a cup?

Babcock wasn't a hardass, he was just an asshole who went on a power trip and had his team lose all desire to compete under him. Keefe is always very popular and well liked by his players, but he lacks credibility when trying to be tough and motivating. Berube, on PAPER, seems like exactly what the Leafs need: someone who's tough, but fair. Someone not afraid to call people out who aren't pulling their weight, but can still rally a team to believe in themselves, and in him. He's someone players will RESPECT. ON PAPER, at least. We'll just have to see in the Fall whether that actually plays out or not.
