It's like the old saying " No marriage is perfect, and most don't even come close." I think the church is it's own worst enemy.

Viewing it from another continent, it seems like pure American politics to me. If you scrub out any reference to Jesus and replace it with the name of a politician of your choosing, it immediately becomes just another political campaign ad promising (unlike all the other nasty politicians) to look after the interests of minorities.

Bambrick's add presents more Gospel, more clearly, with actual testimonial information about real people making real conversions to Christ. Loved the add. And like me, he is a son of Ulster. A well done ad.

The issue with anything of this ilk is that it is very hard to find the balance of making something that will catch the eye of the viewer but also be able to give a true representation of the gospel. In this case they've used some vivid imagery and the aspect of faith they've chosen (serving/loving your enemies) is an appealing one. But you can't help but look past some of the political and cultural undertones. The hope and prayer should be that it may spark people's interest in Christianity and that their curiosity may lead to full understanding of the gospel, including the less flashy bits!

"We are not like those people over there" is precisely the issue I hear behind many conservative Christian's discontentment with this ad. It sounds a lot like "‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector."

Yes there's definitely something to this. I see many Christians irked by the suggestion that they're not as righteous as others (because they don't wash enough feet). The danger is that they lash back by saying, "No, progressives, you're not as righteous as *us* - we left all that sinning behind us." The answer is not to focus on *us* - whether it's the 'righteous inclusive ones" OR 'the righteous transformed ones'. The answer is to focus on Jesus.

@@SpeakLifeMedia Yep. I agree 100%. I think both sides (at least the more online parts) are clearly in danger here and we need to be wise in our response. Like C.S. Lewis says, "“He (the devil) always sends errors into the world in pairs--pairs of opposites...He relies on your extra dislike of one to draw you gradually into the opposite one. But do not let us be fooled. We have to keep our eyes on the goal and go straight through between both errors. We have no other concern than that with either of them.” That said, I find that the message that Christians (most particularly conservative Christians) are hateful, phobic, and bigoted is not one that is hard to come by in our cultural context. The He Gets Us campaign is not really adding anything thoughtful to the conversation in this regard, IMO. I find this to be an exercise in the Illusory Truth Effect. The more you repeat it, the more people believe it to be the truth. But is it actually the truth? I find it far more transgressive (and biblical) to make the statement that Christ works his infinite goodness and incomprehensible kindness THROUGH the profoundly imperfect and diverse body of Christ. I say all of this as a person that grew up in a little conservative church, who then spent 14 years growing a more "progressive'ish" urban church in our state's capitol city from 50 people a week to 1,500, thinking the conservative church from which I came was kind of lame, outdated, and lacked intellectual muscle. "Thank God I am not like them..." I found myself thinking on a pretty regular basis. Turns out, after my world got shaky, I now am back to my unfashionable, but faithfully (and imperfectly) obedient church home and have been humbled over and over again at the beautiful, societal and culture-impacting work that God is doing through this little "lame and outdated" church body. For over a decade I thought it was that oversimplistic conservative church that was a stumbling block, I ended up finding the real stumbling block was my own pride and self-righteousness. Just my $0.02

I wish they would make commercials showing the actual words and actions of Christ. He brought peace and quenched the pain of sinners. Once we start turning to Christ, the Spirit will drive change in us OR we become hardened and impotent like many Church going “Christians”.

Jes'us'? To me that was the most powerful and telling declaration of their theology. This is simply Jesus turned 'spiritual' for the sake of just another innocuous social 'unity' slogan. “Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword." -Matthew 10:34

I don't believe this version of fully inclusive Jesus is going to act as the "in" to Christianity that some people think it will. I don't believe it's the beginning of the slippery slope to salvation... I think it's more likely to be a slippery slope into corrupting the Church (which is already a huge problem, by the way).

I don't think it depicted a fully inclusive Jesus, in the sense that it was saying Jesus affirmed the sin of the people depicted in the ad. The ad just communicates to me Jesus loves you no matter who you are or what you've done. The only issue I have is that it doesn't mention that we need Jesus for our salvation.

Yes, their Jesus-focus is something we can all learn from. But as we'll say in our next video... they have a strange distinction going on in their thinking about the humanity of Jesus (as opposed to his divinity). This leads them to major on the moral example of Jesus rather than his divine identity.

@@SpeakLifeMedia They mentioned the name "Jesus", but that "Jesus" was what St. Paul called another Jesus. Same name, different person, different gospel, different spirit: 2 Corinthians 11:4 - For if he who comes preaches ANOTHER JESUS whom we have not preached, or if you receive a DIFFERENT SPIRIT which you have not received, or a DIFFERENT GOSPEL which you have not accepted-you may well put up with it!

The "church" might be preceived as more hateful, providing they're faithful in their imitation of Christ. Even though Jesus was loving, he opened most of his messages with "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand". "Repent" IMPLIES that there's something wrong with us while expliciting saying "turn from what you're doing". If individual Christians performed this way they too would be hated as much as "the church". The call to repent implies a superior position to judge and assess and ask for change. This is *perceived* as hateful and invokes a hateful response in return. The irony is, these very people calling their fellow travellers to eternity to repent, as perfectly aware of how sinful they are too. A further irony is that this only applies to the spirtual dimension, but we wouldn't have a problem with it if we're refering to the physical.

Another issue is with the millions who have left the "institutional church", these adds do not address those issues. The really big reason is the "church" today does not look in the least like the relational faith community we find in the pages of the New Testament. I was involved for 14 years in planting house churches. The biggest reason people leave is because there is no life and expression of life in church gatherings. There is a ton of religion and nothing remotely like the "one another" teachings of Jesus and the apostles. I loathe the institutional church and I was an ordained minister for almost 25 years. The institutional church presents itself as a corporation and as a religious enterprise, rather than a life transforming community. The Reformation got the theology corrected, but Constantine ruined the Early Church and its community practices. We are still living with the furnishings and trappings of what Constantine foisted on the Church. The Underground Church around the globe works, because they do not have property and do not have buildings and property that they depend on. They share life and community together. These ads He Gets Us really miss the point. No clear Gospel message. Then you point people to the "Church" and then all they get is "religion"? He Gets Us, really does not get relational Christian transformational relational community. Not even close.

This ad did not give the Gospel. The Gospel is Jesus died for our sins according to the scriptures; He was buried; and He was bodily raised from the dead on the third day according to the Scriptures. We are all separated from God through our sin, and the only remedy for this is faith in the Gospel as just given. Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come unto God except through Him.
