After the cancellation of the original Battlestar series. A writing campaign reconsidered the fate of the series. So the show returned for a second season. But with several changes affecting areas of the production. Caused the ill fated second season to end, 10 episodes in.

Richard Hatch's attempt to give new life to the original series, I think, would have been awesome! "The Second Coming." But, when I first heard of SyFy's reboot of the series, I was excited. That is until I began to watch the first few minutes. What a disappointment.

Screw the reboot. Never had any interest in watching that. Too bad the series Battlestar Galactica : The Second Coming that was pitched by Apollo character actor Richard Hatch in 1999 was not considered nor picked up by Universal. It would have been a true sequel to the original Battlestar Galactica. I would have surely tuned in to watch it had it been made.

I remember watching the original show back when it first aired and enjoyed it! HATED 1980!! Based on what you describe, and using an adult filter as to what went wrong when 1980 wasin production, there can only be one conclusion: Cocaine. It's one helluva drug! There can be no other explanation for what went on in the writers room at the time.

Big fan of the original BSG, but never became a fan of the reboot. Had models of the Galactica, Viper and Cylon fighter hanging from my ceiling. Yes, 1980 was a total Sugar Honey Ice Tea show, but watched every episode in hopes that the original genre returned. Unfortunately, with the writers they had, it never happened.

Even if it hadn't been placed in a time slot opposite CBS's "60 Minutes", "Galactica 1980" would've probably still have been a ratings failure because of its many inadequacies. Except for the pilot episode and 'The Return of Starbuck', the episodes generally lacked the action, drama and suspense of the original. Kent McCord and Barry Van Dyke are fine actors, but they certainly weren't Richard Hatch and Dirk Benedict. I also felt sorry for poor Lorne Greene, whose role as Adama was reduced to a bit part.

The issue I had with this show was the overused scenes/space battles that they used too many times. This was also seen when Larson did 'Buck Rogers In The 25th Century'. There's a moment on 'Buck Rogers' (the show) where you see a Colonial Viper and a Cylon fighter.... talk about being cheap. The 2003 reboot was far superior in the special effects, but everything looked as though they were on earth. The biggest disappointment came from an interview with Edward James Olmos, who was great in 'Blade Runner', said in that interview "if there's aliens, then I don't want to be a part of it". My reaction was like "you're playing a role in a Sci-Fi story based on the original that had aliens".

I thought the people involved in the reboot were ashamed that they were doing science fiction. The humans on BSG evolved separately from the people of Earth for thousands of years(yarons?), but their culture seemed indistinguishable from modern western civilization.

The concepts were also heavily based on Mormon mythology, something that both Glen A.Larson's original series and the Ron Moore reboot pushed a little too hard in the later episodes. I saw the theatrical international releases of all 3 films as well - 'Battlestar Galactica' (the original 'Saga Of A Star World' pilot before being toned down for television), 'Mission Galactica - The Cylon Attack' (edited from the episodes 'The Living Legend' pt 1 & 2 along with 'Fire In Space') & 'Conquest Of The Earth' (edited from 'Galactica Discovers Earth' pilot & 'The Night The Cylons Landed' from the 1980 series, as well as inexplicably adding Baltar into the mix with scenes cut from 'The Young Lords' episode, in order to have a main antagonist villain for the film. It also gave Dillon a love interest in reporter Jamie Hamilton). 'Conquest' was the most disappointing by far, along with the 1980 series itself. Correct in that the cast & crew were massively reduced due to the lower budget, for example John Dykstra was not special effects supervisor on 1980, which resulted in most space footage being stock from the 1st season, or the poor rear projection footage from the '74 movie 'Earthquake' being superimposed with Raiders from the invasion of Caprica featured in the original '78 pilot, simply retooled for the Cylons invasion of Earth, which turned out to be no threat as it was just a dream sequence, only further frustrating viewers. I think the biggest mistake of all was not having 'The Return Of Starbuck' as the pilot episode for Galactica 1980 but the final one, which had a scripted 2nd part that explained where the unlikeable & polarising character Zee came from, but was not filmed due to ABC's cancellation. It was the best episode hands down & would have satisfied viewers of the original series far better with a resolution for one of it's main characters. But some major plot-holes were always an issue, such as being set in contemporary 1980, supposedly 20 years after the moon landing transmission that ended the original, where it was only 11 years in reality. It wasn't Galactica 1989 lol Not to mention the scripted dialogue & lack of character development etc. Sure the original is a dated product of its time, but the woeful 1980 series really hasn't held up well in comparison, both when it first aired & today. Lorne Greene RIP

The other problem with 80 is that it ditched the whole premise of the show. The names of the characters seemed to suggest that the Capricans landed on Earth when man was still very primitive (Adama, Cassiopeia, Appolo, Tighe [Tigress River] ). They would then gradually share their knowledge with the humans and it sparked the Bronze Age and Mesopotamia, and the Capricans eventually merged into the population. It provided a sci-fi explanation as to how the Bronze Age appeared to have happened so quickly. Instead they landed in LA and wasted everyone's time.

Universal kinda didn't have much of a choice. George Lucas took back his motion control rig and half of Dykstra's crew and they all went back to ILM, and it took Universal a while to come up with its own effects house. By the time they were able to shoot new visual effects, it was already too late. If they were smart, they would have wrapped up "Galactica" after the first season, waited until Universal Heartland was up to speed, then brought it back, instead of juggling both "Galactica" and "Buck Rogers."

I started season 2....and almost fell out of my seat, saying "WHAT IN THE WORLD IS THIS?!! Who are these little kids with superpowers? Where's Starbuck, Apollo, Boomer (well Boomer was there twice). How the creators and execs thought this was a good idea, I'll never know. There were so many ways they could have continued the show without completely throwing out the great premise and great characters. I'm still in shock🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️😄😄, but your video helped me cope!😄

Like all shows the Americans won't leave a working show alone. They assume you have to escalate and expand overtime. Which inevitably gives every show a termination date, you can only expand and escalate so far. When that starts to fail they then go for a complete shift in narrative or the usual time travel or multiverse opt outs... Look at the ones they left alone... MASH, Buffy, Bones, Stargate SG-1

The same can be said about Crusade, the Babylon 5 spinoff.

Actually, before this show Kent McCord had a rather long run starring in Adam-12, a spinoff of Dragnet. I recognized him at the time. It's a safe assumption that others did too. Good assessment of Galactica 1980 though. It had a lot of problems. Sunday at 7 PM was a lousy time slot. I think maybe ABC wanted to kill it but wanted to look as if they were trying to save it.

They really didn't think this through... XD Also, yeah, I agree, saying this show "stole from Star Wars" is completely bull especially when SW borrowed ideas too, and yet nobody complained about that. There may have been bits, and pieces here, and there that were good, but you can obviously tell this show was extremely rushed. What's even more lame was that the awful 2-part Halloween episode didn't even air on October, and instead April. At least the reboot is much better than this mess. I think for a future FTV review you could take a look at "Buzz Lightyear Of Star Command"!

The last episode was dumbest when they wanted to go back in time to the 1940's and give technology to help the human race get defenses earlier against Cylons later on. Why would that woman reporter ever be so naiive to not speak up against the Galacticans' idea to give technology to the 1940's germans! ,of all people to choose from! Why would Dr. Zee be so dumb to consider it? SHouldnt he have studied some earth history before he gave them the go ahead to go back in time!
