Ethan and Angela, I agree, this is one of the best series of travel videos I ever seen on you tube. Well done 👍 The present Duke of Marlborough ( Jamie) was very wayward in his youth ( he kept the gossip columns busy for years ! ) Therefore Blenheim Palace and its grounds were put in trust, run by a board of trustees, so he couldn't sell off the antiques and squander money ! Some stately homes went bankrupt by the heir who inherited doing just that & everything was lost..🙁

I think the way you have presented the trip overall has to be one of the best I've seen on KZread. Breaking it down like you have has kept the interest going as opposed to watching others whereby they just go home and try to condense their whole trip into a 20 min video. Well done you two. P.S. I will go for 495 miles

Tapestries were the wallpaper of the day. You hung them to provide decoration and to keep the heat in. When you went into the gardens you missed one big historical fact. The gardens were designed! The layout of the gardens and lakes has been created. It was created by a landscape designer by the name of Capability Brown. He designed some of the most famous English gardens. He literally moved thousands of tons of earth to create the gardens that we know today and love.

When my son was young we just bought a bigger house and money was tight. We bought a NATIONAL TRUST family ticket and would visit these wonderful old properties and gardens. We would take one of his friends with us footballs lavish picnics and spend the entire day. There was often events like balloon ascension, vintage cars etc, live music, or themed activities. They usually had really good play areas. The gorgeous gardens were on a scale that we could let children run around free without losing sight of them. In those days a family annual ticket was only £65. We had wonderful memorable times and albums of gorgeous photos to show for it.

Having a Family Chapel in these Great Houses we often them as Stately Homes is quite usual . The opening of these Houses to the Public mainly happened in the 1950s due to the tax situation these Homes needed income to upkeep repair and maintenance. This then became a lovely way for ordinary folks to have a day out. We also learned our History. I stood on the Railway Bridge and watched Churchills Funeral Train go by just before Woodstock as a child as I knew it was an important part of History. The local people I believe can get a Year pass my parents had one to visit regularly. That's common . Very glad you enjoyed the UK please come back there is loads to see.

Hello Ethan and Angela. Marlborough was like the Eisenhower of his day, leading an army to victory over the dominant power in Europe, but in his case this was France. I loved the toy soldier display you showed before. I have a collection of wargames figures. By coincidence, I was staying with a friend from the RAF, helping his club to qualify for the World Championship, when I first saw Top Gun, which was on TV that night. I know that feeling of looking for rare books, for uniform and army details, to paint or even make figures that look the part.

Bladon is pronounced Blaydon. I live about 20 minutes away from there. Fun fact, the current Duke of Marlborough owns most of the nearby villages, and when you live in these villages they own the grounds that the houses are built on above a certain depth and through council taxes they get a cut of the money.

It's quite normal now to get a ticket that lasts a year to major attractions. Zoos, wildlife parks, some museums, theme parks etc. It help keeps the catering to stay open and some offer special meal discounts for pensioners mid week that are popular. Normally these places are huge, spacious and quiet. The tickets do not cover special events but sometimes you can get a discount. Then there are VIP passes and tickets at extra cost with additional privileges such as catering discounts, email updates for specialist talks and tours etc. So a lot of variety.

On display at Blenheim , is the pencil message Churchill wrote to his wife - on the back of a German innkeeper's bill - so she could tell Queen Anne of the great victory at Blenheim.

There’s lots of big country houses, or “stately homes” as they’re often called, around the UK. People used to build them to demonstrate their wealth and status. The trouble is, they were nearly all built without any indoor plumbing and only fireplaces for heating. The scale of them makes them difficult to maintain, so those that remain are often open to the public to pay for their upkeep. I recall a documentary TV programme where a woman who had spent most of her life maintaining a country house had moved into a small tied cottage in the grounds. She remarked that she could never return to living in the main house because for the first time in her life, she’d actually felt warm indoors.

Hello you two, you're finally in my part of the country, or you were in the video (Oxford). The traffic is bad in this city, the streets are too small for all the traffic that tries to get through it and it gets very snarled up during rush hour. Looks like you stayed down by the stadium outside the ring road which is a fair way off from the city centre. The town right next to Blenheim Palace is Woodstock and at that point you are heading west into the Cotswolds (hills) which gets a lot of tourists, a good many of them american. The little village with the churchyard where Churchill is buried is Bladon (pronounced Blay-don), just one a few small villages between the edge of Oxford and Woodstock, also you drove right past Oxford airport (pretty small) where your pilot (Emily ?) said she did some pilot training. The airport is well known in the aviation community for training, internationally as well as within the UK. I am glad you enjoyed your time over here. It is interesting to see how foreigners react to the differences, I myself spent 16 years living in the US, mostly Virginia and Kentucky, so can relate to the culture shock. Looking forward to the Oxford video.

Hi and thanks again for another great video. Love to watch you guys and am so glad you had a blast in the UK! I think I’ve said this before but if you haven’t read it you must read Notes From A Small Island by Bill Bryson. I think of it every time I watch Americans over here. He writes about his visit to Blenheim as well as Llandudno and Scotland. I think you’d really relate to it and it’s a very funny read. Dan, UK.

Doesn’t Oxford have a ‘park and ride’? Most cities have these out of town car parks (essentially) you can park up and then get the regular shuttle buses into town… York deffo does with a big strip mall there aswell.

Up in the North East of England is Beamish open air museum with old trams and buses and old villages how they would of been and mines, schools and a chippy. You buy a family ticket and it's valid for a year.

You guys did make it interesting, so thank you. However, would you come back for another holiday? If so, what would you do on the next visit, or would you go to Europe instead?

Coaster? And then I realised it was Costa, pronounced Coh-Sta. Bladon is Blay-don. Having been to the States and watched movies there, I find the clapping at the end very odd. In the UK, we just get up and leave.

You did an impressive amount of things on your trip. You could have easily spent 2 weeks in London alone.

If you live in Woodstock or Bladon you can use the grounds for free........ Also you can fish the lake from the bank. I lived in Woodstock in the 80's.
