Wales is beautiful. I did my Duke of Edinburgh award 🥈 there. We went hiking and climbing up Cader Idris. It was misty, when we got near the top, the mist cleared and seeing the green valleys below was the most breathtaking, beautiful sight I had seen up to that point. Honestly my senses were overwhelmed. I had tears. I couldn’t explain it. One just has to see the view yourself. Our guide told to take in the view. It will be forever etched in the memory.

I’m from England and I feel that no trip to Great Britain is complete without a trip to Wales. Absolutely loved this vlog. I was showing a friend from America around in summer 2019 and she was so impressed that she got to visit two countries after I took her to Wales. I spent many a childhood holiday in Wales and the last family holiday when I was a young teen right before my dad passed away was in Wales and we had the best time and it is one of my vivid memories of time spent with him.

Some years ago my father was terminally ill and we took him on a final trip to his birth place in Wales. We visited the Elan Valley and my father walked for a while and said it was the most beautiful place he had seen in his life. When you spend time with someone so ill you start to see through their eyes. The colours were so vivid and it was a wonderful time for us. Later a work colleague had to make a business trip and asked me for directions. I deliberately directed him though the Elan Valley. When he returned he thanked me and said my father had been right. For years he had not visited Wales because he had thought it was just an industrial area and hadn't believed me when I had told him that it was possibly the most beautiful part of the UK. He had immediately booked a two week trip with his equally sceptical girlfriend to introduce her to Wales.

It’s true about the industry of Wales as slate was mined there and sent all over the world for roofing materials…. The Elan valley supplies dinking water to Birmingham …Nuclear and hydro electric power stations in Snowdonia and huge steel mills in the South… Wales is quite amazing as an industrial power house but still retained its natural charm

The industrial parts of Wales are dog rough, and some areas have deprivation so bad that historically they qualified for, and received, European Union financial aid. Thankfully these areas are very separate, and nothing unpleasant 'spills out' elsewhere. This is about 1% of what you would see, and can avoid quite easily. The other 99% is stunning. I think we downplay the beauty a bit, but we don't want to get too popular ;)

We did so many fun things: going to pubs, sightseeing in Cardiff, went swimming in Swansea - but the most cherished memory is when we took a tour ride by horse in those BEAUTIFUL mountains (on our way down I sometimes feared for my life 😂 but it was still beautiful). We had lunch at a pub, we tied up the horses outside and went in for a meal 😂 - fantastic! I’ve been to a bunch of different countries, but this trip I still love the most. I wanted to stay, but unfortunately I decided to go back home to my boyfriend at the time 😕. (I’m Swedish 🇸🇪.)

I'm originally from Llandudno although we moved away when I was four. We made regular trips back throughout my childhood as both sets of grandparents were there. My sister is now living there again so I'm still a regular visitor. On my mum's side of the family we're related to Richard Hughes who was one of the contractors that built the Marine Drive. My dad's parents lived on the Great Orme and my grandpa used to work on the trams. My dad was an apprentice electrician at the Pier Pavilion Theatre (sadly it burnt down in the 90s) and was later a projectionist at the Savoy Cinema in Mostyn Street (where KFC is now). My mum was Rose Queen of Llandudno in 1950. The same year there was a train crash in nearby Penmaenmawr and my Taid (grandfather), a local policeman, was one of the first on the scene. He later received a commendation from the King.

I think you can only pick your favourite cause it maybe holds memories of childhood holidays or something but I’d find it impossible to choose a favourite based on how stunning the views are etc because there are so many stunning areas.

Those sheep probably belonged to a farmer. It's not uncommon in many parts of the UK for sheep to roam the countryside (which is why it's important to leave gates as you find them, i.e. if it's shut before you go through it, then shut it again behind you). They usually have coloured markings, a bit like they've been shot with a paintball gun, that indicate whose sheep they are. Sometimes they have numbered ear tags as well which identify individual sheep.

I know a lot of people look down on the Welsh North Coast as being a bit tired and run down (to be polite) and Llandudno has a reputation for being an old people's town but there's some great stuff there still. I can't imagine ever getting bored of Llandudno. I have a great memory of being on Llandudno pier, very late at night, caught in an incredible storm out to see that slowly moved inland over the pier. We lived in Llandudno for around 10yrs, have lived along the coast there for much longer than that. North Wales is beautiful especially the coast line. We live in a small village, still in North Wales, but in the Snowdonia area now, it's as pretty inland as coastal. It has probably been said in the comments, but the hard foundations on the great orme were where gun emplacements were in ww2, there was a military barracks around the other side as you leave marine drive, just foundations now, but was quite an important place for trialing different wartime things out on the sea etc there. Was the 'Rest & Be Thankful' cafe open on the top ? we knew the owners some time back, probably in new hands now. Lovely place to just relax have a pot of tea, teacake or whatever. Lost count of the times we went around the orme, you can get a year pass, doesn't cost that much, also in winter you can just drive around no charge. It is a lovely place, but there are hundreds of places like that in North Wales, many are much more beautiful, its a land of beauty.

The reason for the long piers around Britain is that before the advent of the motor car all transport on land was by horse or horse-drawn carriage. It was often quicker to go round the coast by boat but the size of boat meant a harbour or something where the boat could moor in deeper water .So piers stretching out to sea were built ,the passengers would alight then walk along the pier to the land. Of course ,once there were cars the piers became obsolete for that purpose and became a local tourist attraction ,with games ,rides and sometimes a small theatre at the sea end .

The piece of metal you found under the pier is called a rowlock, pronounced "rollock" for some obcure reason as the spelling makes sense as it slots in a hole on the side of a rowing boat and holds the oar steady when rowing. I suspect the concrete platform on Great Orme may have been a gun platform from the second world war as the Irish sea was the entry to the Mersey and Liverpool where the Atlantic Convoys went into.
