I think at the time of Abe's presidency finding safe water was very difficult; you'll notice that a lot of Americans favoured alcoholic drinks as they were safer than water! So I think if you were to drink clean water, and water that was safe was quite rare, which makes Lincoln's fondness for it all the more miraculous! Overall Whiskey/Whisky was usually drank in abundance in the early days of America before anything else.

Could be lack of options. Water was actually the source of a lot of illnesses until we learned how to filter and refine it. That’s what killed Polk (cholera). As we get further out, could just be what they enjoy, but I know a lot of them also used it as an unhealthy coping mechanism.

Hey, he never said those were the only drinks they ever drank. Those were only the Presidents' FAVORITE Drinks, not the Presidents' ONLY Drinks. Mr. Beat's video on this clears it up. And you will notice that neither he nor Mr. Nowicki here mention their own personal views on alcohol in their videos. Also, people in the past DIDN'T drink only alcohol. They drank "Ale if I can get it, and water if I have no ale." (excerpt from a medieval monk's account) Also, what's wrong with being anti-alcohol? That drink will mess you up.
