What Was Good Enough for You | Michael Lanning & Linda Eder | 2000 "Romantics" Demo | Bonnie & Clyde

Here is the 2000 demo to "What Was Good Enough for You," sung by Michael Lanning and Linda Eder, written for the Bonnie and Clyde segment of the unproduced "The Romantics" project. Linda Eder's husband Frank Wildhorn supplied the music, while Don Black supplied the lyrics.
Video footage of the November 9, 2011 Broadway performance of "Bonnie & Clyde," featuring Jeremy Jordan and Laura Osnes, has been synced up to the demo.
Imagined as a multi-media franchise for Atlantic Records, The Romantics was planned as a series of song-cycles, written as 12-15 minute "mini-musicals" based off of theatrical and dramatic moments of various literary and historical couples. In a July 18, 2000 article, Playbill notes "In each segment, there will be a three-part format, with the female lead having her moment, the male lead his, and then a shared moment featuring both." When announced, The Romantics, Volume 1, intended to be released Valentines Day 2001, would have featured five couples, selected by Atlantic Records, with Linda Eder performing the part of all the female leads, paired with a series of male artists (selected by Eder and Wildhorn). Wildhorn would have composed the music for each couple with a series of lyricists. Both a television concert special and theatrical tour were also being discussed for the project.
Announced with the project, Bonnie and Clyde was likely already being thought about as a larger work of its own, as a August 23, 2000 article noted that the story was "one of the 'franchise' break outs" of the project, and that it had already been mentioned as a possible franchise property of its own. When Atlantic Records' parent company Time Warner merged with AOL (a deal that has since been described as one of the worst business decisions in history), The Romantics project was abandoned, though work on Bonnie and Clyde continued.
