For my new home in the mountains I may spend more on a John but for now I want one with replaceable parts that can be bought at the big box stores . I do my own plumbing so I look for easy. I probably will never buy American Standard again. The ones we have where I work are easy to repair I been doing it for over 20 years. But my junk I bought about seven years ago are ghost John's . A flapper and fill valve is the best john for me PS in not into saving a cup of water. I like the double flush I know if the next person is going to over flow the John. So I can clean the line out with hot water. I save our company hundreds of dollars on plumbing service calls. 73

I've also noticed that different brands have different diameter passages which seemed important to me. Since you've shown the different radius of bends and sweeps it seems that those would be important too. In my previous house I had a fancy brand toilet that was prone to stopping up. I did some study and bought the American Standard that had the largest diameter trapway, no more clogged toilet after that.

Great tests! I have the Kohler Elmbrook in one of my bathrooms. I installed it in 2018. So far it has performed well, although the rinse could be better. It did plug once. My plunger couldn't unclog it. I had to get a plunger made especially for the newer style toilets, which solved the problem in just a few seconds. We also have an American Standard Optum Vormax, installed in 2015. It rinses the sides of the bowl very well, but the jet action below is lacking, so much so that we often have to flush twice, and sometimes 3 times.

I have an American Standard toilet that came with the house that I bought 12 years ago and if you do a pee, it only needs about 1/2 gallon minimum to do a flush. I’ve seen a whole variety of toilets, some rather brand new, in the many hotels I have stayed in while traveling. Some of those toilets, even brand new, you might need a gallon or a gallon or a gallon and half to get a pee to flush own. I’ve learned a lot about various toilets from all the places of lodging I have stayed at and if I ever had to buy a new toilet, I have learned you got to know what to look for when you need to replace a toilet. They are not all the same and some flush lot better than others.

You should do another test to see which toilet flushes out a long pipe run best because at least one toilet is usually put at the farthest end of the main sewer pipe so when it flushes, it can help to clear out anything left behind from the sinks and other fixtures that run into the line downstream. They came up with these standards of only 1.23 gallons of water per flush to give plumbers job security when they have to come and clear everyone's drains all of the time because toilets don't put enough water down to keep the pipes clear.

Stupid 1.6 gal flush clogs up rural lines that have to run 100 feet to the sewer, that's why I put in an antique toilet with the BIG tank, never had to call roto rooter since I put that one it. There's NO WAY 1.6 gallons let alone 1.2 is going to carry a pile and paper down 8 feet, laterally 10 feet, 90 degree turn and 100 feet down the driveway to the sewer under the road, it needs at least TWICE that amount of water or more. I pay for my water by the 1,000 gallons and never USED 1,000 gallons in a month. I have a Speed Queen washer that actually FILLS the tub to the top for an actual wash, bought that and threw away a 2 year old Whirlpool Washer that thought 3" of water in the tub was enough to WASH two full sized blankets, are they serious??? Nobody even wanted the Whirlpool washer, it sat by the curb for a week, even put it up on FB market place free, tells you something huh! After a week of sitting there I wheeled it back and broke it apart to scrap the metals.

I've purchased and replaced a number of toilets in my different homes thru the years. Early on I used American Standard mostly. When I needed to replace a couple of toilets in my prior house, I bought a Champion and a Lexington, both one-piece. I liked their Champion line, however the original Champions had a poorly designed and constructed flush tower. Flushed strong but leaked like crazy after a year or so. I wrote the company and they sent me a redesigned one at no charge. Did not last that much longer, maybe two-plus years before the familiar bowl-filling sound would fill the air every hour or so. I ended up getting a Toto for that bathroom, and another Toto for a third bathroom in the same house. The Lexington was a poor flushing model, no jet or suction at all. In our current home, I replaced all three toilets with Toto's. A bit more expensive but extremely reliable.

I would add the the design of the valves/plunger inside as a factor. Some toilets might flush well, but uses expensive plunger/valve systems that makes it prone to leaks, failures or hard to fix or replace.

Trutrek I hear you. The last American Standard toilet I installed in my home is a ghost toilet it's always refilling up all night And day. I fixed it so it just leaks in the bowl but doesn't refill up. I just let water go in the bowl until the tank refills then I flush. But it takes the second flush to really clean out the bowl. I'm going to replace the ugly bowl and tank. I cracked the last tank in the master bathroom so I will remove the cracked tank and use the front tank from the other bathroom. I'm going to look inside the box before I buy new. I want just standard parts no O rings and seals just flappers and fill valves. 73

what do you do when your assisted jet line on bottom to help flush is plugged with lime/scale? ... i regret buying my American standard with jet on bottom cuz its the first thing to plug up. now the bowl itself scales up more cuz not a lot of water goes thru rim to clean bowl, most of it use to go thru jet on bottom .... i should have stuck with a bowl without the jet and just had a exit hole on bottom with ALL the water coming thru rim holes, then my bowl would have stayed clean ...

It does make a difference on most modern toilets. You push and release quickly for a #1 flush, and push and hold until the tank is empty for a #2. That said, they didn't do the most important test, just how much toilet paper will each one take. In my experience, you use just a little too much paper, and most toilets these days clog up in the trap. Probably because the traps aren't glazed, and the TP gets stuck to the rough porcelain there.

It all comes down to tank size, if you put in a high tank type toilet and you were handy, you could fabricate a sheet copper tank a lot larger than the reproduction ones that have 1.6 gal max- make it like 3 gallons and a nice oak cabinet around it like they have, and you'd have a really good flush

The one thing that is not talked about much, American standards used to be better than they are now...at least for the replacement parts, and especially in california which has the super low gallow flush requirements. I got one of their 'super flush' champion style toilets back in 2004 and with the original flush mechanism you flush and the bowl was just suddenly empty. Then after years, the seals for that started leaking, so I bought the replacement...it didnt work quite as well, but still worked ok, then years later that also started leaking down into the bowl, so the third set of american standard replacement flush mechanism....sucks. If anything is fully sunk, it goes in one flush, but if there is anything not sunk it takes multiple flushes. I went to just having a empty bucket in that bathroom that if it gets too annoying, I just fill it up in the tub and pour it down to get it to flush. I called them and they admitted it is due to the replacement parts being for the even lower flow toilets and not doing the larger flush volumes that the older toilets need. So at some point I may have to just get a new toilet just due to the official replacement toilet parts not working right.

I have the American Standard Champion 4 in my house. Had them for about 4 years now and they are the 1.28 GPF variant (I think). Haven't had one clog yet. Only difference I've noticed relative to the 1.6 GPF variant my parents had in their house (also never clogged over something like 10 years) is I have to hold the flush lever just a split second longer on the newer ones. Both excellent toilets that never clog. Far better than than many of the older water wasters I've used. So good that my parents had to have a plunger in their old house, but with the Champion 4 in their new one, they pretty much forgot where they put it - it was just never needed. I don't even own a plunger - have never needed it. And no, I don't need multiple flushes. One is enough 99% of the time. Can't even remember the last time I needed more than one. And the few times I did need more than one, it was only two. And that's not that expensive of a toilet - about $200 at my local Lowe's (elongated, chair height).

Guarantee that if your toilet was 100+ feet of horizontal line under your driveway to get to the sewer in the street you'd have clogs, there's no way that small amount of water is going to float or carry away a pile and paper all that distance. @@HobbyOrganist Not been a problem in my experience. The guest house at my parents place (which we lived in for quite awhile while we built the main house) was at least 100 feet from the septic tank, never had a problem. At my house, I probably have 30-40 feet between the house and the septic tank. Closest toilet is maybe another 20 feet inside the house, farthest is maybe 60 feet. Never had a problem. If I were guessing, I'd say you probably don't have the right amount of slope. Both too much and too little can cause a problem - too little is obvious enough, but too much can cause liquids to separate, leaving solids behind, clogging the pipe.
