Thanks so much for this video. It’s very brave and compassionate and wise of you to share this information with so many people. I was born with the cataract in my left eye, which pretty much obscured all my vision, except for a little bit of peripheral, but I just learned that I can get the lazy part of myself corrected, which can help a little bit with a double vision I guess, and the cosmetic of people looking at me different because I look different. It has led me to be more compassionate and more excepting of people, I mean more grateful for the miracle of the body, but I also see the advantages of cosmetic surgery and feeling good about yourself.❤ thanks again for sharing. It’s takes a lot of courage to show the world that we are not perfect as humans, and we all just want to be accepted and be loved.

I haven't had the money to have surgery or even to pay for an appointment. Hey, thanks for making this video. I'm learning about the surgery in preparation for getting it done next month. My eyes aren't super misaligned (just a bit), but the doctor says this is the best option to correct my double vision, as the amount of prism needed to fix my double vision is way too much to put into my glasses lenses. I've actually been told this for years, but the doctor actually pulled me into a side office this time and told me I really needed to get this done. I thought this was only for people with crossed eyes or something, but apparently the same problem is what causes the double vision. I'm excited, but also nervous. You helped alleviate some of that. It's good to know that if my vision/look goes weird for a while, it's normal. :)

It sounds like I have similar issue. Its gotten to point where I've maxed out the amount of prism in my lenses, so I'm having surgery next week 6/13. Trying to explain what my vision is and isn't to someone who doesn't have this is difficult. Driving depth perception is the most worrisome. Really paying attention to stop light is also nerve-wracking. Bright sunlight is a beast. Double vision is maddening. Also, my prescription (esp in my right eye) is very strong. My right eye is basically useless. I will have a stick-on prism for that lens to negate the prism in the lens due to the correction. Im hoping I won't be out of commission for too long. How did your surgery go, and did it completely remedy the issues you were experiencing?

After surgery I wasn’t allowed for about 3 weeks to have dry eye treatments.I have been in lots of dry eye pain. It will take many laser treatments to get back to where I was. I had surgery to correct a significantly turned right eye when I was almost two years old. Although the strabismus was corrected, I have amblyopia in that eye. Indeed, the vision is so impaired in the right eye that I cannot read and cannot recognise faces using that eye. My strabismus returned about two years ago, along with age related cataracts in both eyes. My optician has referred me for a consultation to discuss correction of the turned eye (it is the right eye). The information in your video has made me decide that I will not elect to have correctional surgery, if that is offered. This is a very personal decision, based on my age, the vision loss in the turned eye, and the fact that I have other eye conditions to consider. I know for many people, surgery will have immensely positive outcomes. Thank you for being so honest and sharing your experience.

I want to get surgery to correct my eyes, but there’s a few things I’m worried about. 1 being put to sleep. 2 the risk of having permanent vision lost or double vision. 3 having to have repeated surgeries if the first one don’t work.

I really appreciate you doing this video! I had eye surgery when I was 3 to correct my eye turning in and have always worn glasses. As a child I never noticed a problem with my eyes but as I got older into high school I started to notice in pictures that my eye would turn out. I’m now 21 and find it is getting worse and have been really self conscious about it, avoiding pictures, making eye contact with people, and wearing sunglasses as much as I can. I’ve been worried it will just get worse as I continue to age and didn’t think there was anything to do about it until recently when I learned about this surgery in adults. I was just wondering how you went about getting this surgery? I’m just unsure if I go to my regular eye doctor and talk to them about it or if I have to go elsewhere?

I've had a very hard time getting the surgery. I asked two different doctors, ⁶and they were both very rude and wanted to know who told me about this. I don't know why they treated me that way. It was very hurtful. I saw these doctors years apart and in different cities. I couldn't do anything but cry. I became self isolated for a couple of years. I still want to have the surgery, but I can not take the emotional toil it took on me to just ask about it.

I feel it's very noticeable and I don't want to leave the house. My Dr. told me that it takes time to adjust/settle, up to two months she told me. I had a surgery to correct my strabismus about 11 years ago and it didn't go well. They said that I needed to have prescription glasses after the surgery to help with the correction. I had the insurance to get the surgery but not the insurance to get the glasses and I went to about a dozen different places to see if they would take my insurance & they would not. I was broke and couldn't afford the glasses on my own. The doctor wanted to do the surgery anyway and I didn't know how long it would take to get to get the insurance/money for the glasses, if I was able to get the insurance/money at all. The hospital where I had the surgery is a _`teaching hospital`;_ so, every patient was a guinea pig. So, hoping that I would just not need them, I decided to get the surgery anyway. And I still have it. It didn't fix my eyes at all. That is a scumbag hospital and a scumbag doctor! Medical malpractice, in my opinion.

You say your goal is to help 1000 people find vision therapy. With respect, why not just share your method instead and help countless people with strabismus? Also, did you do vision therapy before, during, or after your surgery? Can eyes revert after successful therapy results; like if binocular vision was achieved, does therapy stop without concern of regression? Any particular exercises that helped you the most? (Name only is fine, e.g. Brock string, 3d glasses with pc games, pencil pushups, etc.) Speaking of games, when trying to use both eyes together to track an object, what eye do you try to focus out of? Do you believe the adjustable sutures made all the difference? Thanks in advance for any response.

So many great questions! I did VT before and after surgery. I am now weaning off of therapy to hopefully stop without regression, but there is always a chance of regression for sure. I imagine that the vision therapy will take some sort of maintenance for at least a few years to solidify the results. My favorite exercises are 3D movies, vectographs, peripheral work, and red/green glasses variations. My goals is to focus out of both eyes equally at the same time, but my left eye is dominant. Yes on adjustable sutures. I believe I would have needed another surgery if my surgeon hadn't used them. I don't share the details and methods of my therapy in a way that people could follow for a few reasons. 1. Not everyone has my diagnosis so what works for me won't work for the next person (this is why I recommend working with a developmental OD) 2. With a severe diagnosis, like mine, doing exercises on your own can lead to double vision, no fix on the eye turn, and a lot of side effects (I know because I tried for 6 months). I try to share tips on specific exercises that have helped me, but I am not interested in helping people with DIY therapy. Hopefully that makes sense!

With Extropia Surgery can binocular vision be restored? Do you have binocular vision?

  • @strabismustostereopsis7799

Sometimes the binocular vision can be restored if it was present before hand. My surgeon told me that happens about 2% of the time. The best way to get binocular vision improvements is through vision therapy. You can get help finding an office, go to strabismussolutions.com/findvt/

It can definitely be helpful, but if your brain isn't able to use both eyes together, you might end up with double vision. I would recommend also doing vision therapy.

I just had surgery last week, my eyes were pretty straight before but my left eye would float out every once in a while. they did surgery on both eyes. did you ever feel like your eye muscles on the side were being pulled to their limit? definitely feel like im gonna snap them if I try to look from side to side

Yes, they are really tight and sore for a few weeks. I thought of it like having a a knee surgery. The rehab for those muscles can take months. The eye muscles are smaller, but still require a recovery.

That is quite normal, unfortunately. They say the final results are at 6 weeks, so there is still time for adjustment. Try to focus on looking far away and not a lot of up close screen time. If you want to talk about it over zoom, sign up at strabismussolutions.com/consult/
