@Tory Berch Hi, I came home on the 23rd. I've been mostly sleeping on and off. I was journaling a lot before I left. I've just been way too tired to do that now, but when I start getting my thoughts together, I'll let you know. I will tell you having the leg lifter and satin P j's and sheets have been a lifesaver getting in-and-out of bed.

I need a hip replacement right now hip. I have been in pain for 12 years. I am a martial artist since 1966. I am a Vietnam veteran. It has affected my whole life. I live in Austin Texas. And I have 100% ptsd. I am getting my hip surgery outside the V. A. I have gained weight from not being able to get enough exercise. Yes I do get nervous about it. They told me o would have a spinal block. Thank you for sharing . I am going to be 73. August 27. I will walk again .

yes...right now he's loving me up for a treat. 😺 But in truth he loves to be around us. When he was a kitten at the SPCA he had some problems so that he had to be kept in a carrier isolated from all the other animals. So they kept him at the front desk and I think that really made him a people lover.

If they give you an option for a spinal, instead of getting "put under".....go for the spinal. I had my left hip done on 1/23 and I'm ready to go back to work 3/27. Healing has been great and physical therapy has been amazing!! If you think you need it done, DON'T WAIT!!

Thanks for watching and commenting! Absolutely agree about not waiting if you need hip replacement. So we had our THR on the exact same day, that's kinda cool! Glad you feel ready to go back to work...what kind of job is it? Re: the spinal, I had a spinal block (single shot) and then they used Propofol so that I wouldn't remember the surgery. So what's been the most memorable/important milestone you've achieved so far?

@@Life411 Putting my socks on WITHOUT the "sock helper" AND walking without any sort of limp. I feel amazing. I had the spinal and propofol just like you. I'm a delivery driver for a local soft drink distributor. I have all of the vending machines in Rapid City (About 25 stops a day). My employer is VERY accommodating. I'm very lucky. Going back to work on Monday. Light duty and then I think I'll be able to "ease into it". I'm a delivery driver for a Pepsi distributor....I restock Pepsi vending machines in town. I saw your comment and had to say something. I wish you all the best with your THR. I have never had a TKR, but have read and been told that a TKR is a harder recovery. I had a Direct Anterior Right THR on 12/22/23 due to severe osteoarthritis. Basically it was bone on bone. Like you I had so much pain before surgery. Went 2 yrs. roughly walking with a limp on my right side. Mind you recovery wasn't a total breeze, but so grateful and thankful I went through it. Mine was outpatient and was only out of work 4 weeks.

@@Life411 my biggest milestone is getting down on the floor and back up with no difficulty or pain. I’m looking forward to the day I can walk long distances without getting sore. My hip flexor gets angry at me if I overdue it during the day.

Had hip replacement three weeks ago and I have had a remarkable recovery. I shouldn’t have waited so long. Pain free and walking normal again

Trying to finish up the work I have before surgery. I can only spend a few hours on my feet and then the pain sets in. Spending the rest of the night sitting in my recliner with a ice pack and tylenol and ibuprofin. Sleep is difficult most nights. I do not belong to any FB groups but I am surrounded with family/friends who have had one or both hips done. I am anxious to get the surgery done but a little terrified at the same time. I have been under anesthesia before but never had a surgery anywhere close to this magnitude.

I had hip replacement surgery On Feb 20 2023,had the spinal anesthesia..I went home the next day and have only taken Tylenol for pain since the day of my surgery..I would say the first week my pain level was like a 3 or 4..

I had a THR on my right side 4 weeks ago. Had the spinal with propofol. Definitely the way to go. The surgery was a breeze and I did all of my walking and stairs right away and went home. PT started 2 days later. I had percoets for pain which was great….until I got super constipated. That was THE WORST part of this whole procedure. If you can make it with just ibuprofen, go that route. I’m still sore but walking and driving (once off the oxy, 2 weeks in) and back to the gym. Gets a little better every day!

Really enjoyed your video. I need both hips done posterior approach. I can not walk and basically in bed 24 7. I'm stuck upstairs very depressed. Dr. said BMI needs to improve to have surgery. In fact doctor said I'm a difficult case so I need to start over in finding a new doctor. I've got so much pain and no help. Thank you for sharing your experience.

I had to find a new surgeon as well, but fortunately someone I knew recommended one and he turned out to be a great surgeon. Re: your BMI struggle, you might try looking up Libby Spong. She's a fitness person who has had THR and I understand she works with folks on issues like this. I think she is mostly on Instagram, but has a YT channel and is on FB. Not sure if she will be able to help you, but thought it was worth mentioning. Good luck in your hip journey!

I had to have an okay for the surgery by my oncologist. It is a big surgery . It is a stress for the body. I had the surgery privately as the waiting list was long. So I had to have a thorough preop assessment. I have lymphoma and low immune system and on blood thinners . I would not have had such a work up if surgery not private. I was worried I would not be able to have the surgery.

Try to meet with the surgeon. Not your doctor or assistant. I went straight to him with the question Will you do my hip replacement at my size and weight? 309 lbs. I was really glad he scheduled me right there and posterior procedure worked well for me. Prior to this everyone else told me you must lower your BMI before the surgeon will do it. Looking at losing 60+ lbs. While having all consuming pain was not practical. So direct to the surgeon was a good move for me. He asked me to help him and drop a few pounds in the next 2 months. It worked out great and I hope you can get help.

I’m told I won’t have sutures, a glue dressing instead under the dressing which will dissolve! I have just been reading all the comments and replies- all helpful and very interesting. Meant to ask if your surgeon used the Hana Table a special table for hip replacement surgery. This is what I’ll be placed on. ..yikes!!

I can't believe you were able to sleep on your operated side the first night! That's crazy! I am also a side sleeper, but I sleep on my left almost always, so at least I'll be able to keep that going. And then I can get a little bit of sleep on my back as well

I can’t believe Pete slept on his operating side as well, that’s freaks me out.. I’m also a side sleeper mostly on my right which is where I was operated on and no way I’ll try to sleep on it😮.. laying on my back sleeping some what, can’t wait to sleep on my side again. Praying for all patients that have to have a replacement, it’s hard to come to acceptance but if you’re like me, accepting and be positive especially when you get to the hospital, you’ll be good. I know people say that I didn’t believe until I was in that situation. God Bless.

My pleasure. Yes, mine was a flavor of Anterior called ABMS (Anterior Based Muscle Sparing), but what I've since learned is that there are a million different approaches to posterior and anterior and most seem to have good outcomes with modern medical science. So personally, if you're comfortable with your surgeon, I wouldn't worry too much about the approach...unless they're talking about cutting muscle in which case I'd look for a different surgeon. Good call on the Oxy! That's definitely something I would have asked for sooner. Reach out any time. And if it's not too much trouble, let me know how my videos compared to your own experience with surgery and that first week.

Im 57 and had my right hip done Jan 27 Anterior approach So week 8 this week post surgery I had almost no pain , I was on Tramacet for 4-5 days then Tylenol + Advil after that until week 4 By the end of week 2 I started riding the stationary bike 3 times a day starting at only 5 mins per session then slowly increasing Week 3 ,no more cane and started going to the gym 4-5 days a week . Mostly upper body , light weights , machines only and light leg extensions and hamstring curls Week 6 started 30 min sessions on elliptical and light hack squats along with the rest of my workouts Week 7 started 3.5 mile walks and shorter hikes in the mountains I feel 20 yrs younger on that side , great range of motion , strength and mobility Anterior is an amazing surgery You will have a great recovery

Hi Peter @@Life411 your videos popped up when I searched the + weeks after THR, sadly not the cars lol. You have a good energy and you don't generalise which is useful, the surgery is very unique to individuals and you and I are the younger demographic. I'd like to know when/if you stopped taking pain relief. Your staples horrified me, I have internal dissolvable stitches. I have a thin line almost 30cms long. My joint was so stiff and damaged they had problems getting it out and had to reconstruct part of the pelvis. Similar to you at 3 weeks I'm still in bed a lot, very tired. When will that pass lol. Sorry to ask you questions, I don't know anyone who's had the surgery. So, more hip content please 🤩. It's snowed here in the UK so I'm stuck in now with KZread 😆

Hi Emma, no problem asking questions and thanks for the feedback. Sounds like you had a rough time of it with the partial pelvis reconstruction. Agree completely on the age demographic. I think the average age is in the 70s, so I have to keep reminding my surgeon that I'm 20 years younger and that makes a difference. I know because at 55 my body heals a lot slower than it did at 35! I stopped taking the major pain relief (Oxy) after the first week, but kept on max Tylenol+Meloxicam (anti-inflammatory) +sleep aids (OTC) for 2 or 3 more weeks. I h ad to get off the Oxy because the constipation was worse than the hip pain (sorry if TMI). From what you've said though, I wouldn't be surprised if you were in more pain and might need them longer than I did. In terms of tiredness, I felt pretty good after 4 weeks, but I think the pain meds can play a role there...when I take them, I tend to feel more sleepy/groggy. I'm actually working on a new video today - it's a review of the FaceBook support groups for hip replacement. Do you participate in any of those? Since you're looking for more content, that might be another avenue. Let me know if you want any recommendations in the meantime (the video will come out next weekend I think). Best Regards, Peter

What is a MRSA test like? For me they did this nasty iodine-like swab of my nostrils and left it there the whole day since they said MRSA resides in everyone's nose.

They stick these long swabs/Qtips way up your nose both sides. It's further than a Covid test. I have not gotten the results yet. I'm seeing my doc tomorrow. I'll ask him for the results. Remember, my surgery is December 6th

I am post five weeks past surgery. I think you took more drugs than me, LOL. I don't remember them telling me I was getting a muscle relaxer and Tylenol doesn't do much for me. Then I found out I seem to be allergic to OXY...was scratching all over like crazy and had to quit after fifth day. Now I know why women have children and not men. 😁 Good luck on your progress though and nice cat (I have 4, he really loves you it looks like!)

The very idea that they can just cut the top of your leg off and jam a rod in , with a hammer no less, just blows my mind. It's like a little better than the civil war and being held down as they cut your arm off. Just having trouble wrapping my head around it.

Lol, I get you. I often tell folks that modern medicine is just a notch above witchcraft at this stage, but imagine what they will know and be able to do in 100 years. Now with the hip replacement if you compare outcomes now vs. 20 years ago, it's amazing how far they've come. Let me know if there's anything I can do to talk you down :)

I’m one week from surgery tomorrow. It took three hours to correct all of the issues but the light I see at the end of the tunnel is not an oncoming train. I was surprised that the operated leg behaved like a tube of wet flour for two days, but I was able to simulate walking on the first day. I think that I will try to walk to the mailbox in a few minutes. This is going to be a journey, isn’t it?

Yes sir! Thanks for the update. I like the analogy of the leg being like a tube of wet flour. Are you a Dave Ramsey fan? Asking because of the "oncoming train" comment. Mine was a flavor of Anterior called ABMS (Anterior Based Muscle Sparing). My surgeon has done it about 5,000 times and has a complication rate of 0.3% which is exceptionally good.

So I think the important thing is that your surgeon has a low complication rate and is experienced with the approach. At the time, I was under the impression that Anterior was a superior approach, but a friend recommended a surgeon who was in our provider network, so I went with him. He was the second surgeon I went to because the first was out of network. After meeting with the second surgeon I felt very confident that he was the right choice. So regardless of approach, I would suggest that you feel very comfortable with the surgeon. Ask them how many of this particular procedure they do in one year (mine only does 300, some do 1,000). And ask them their complication rate from all patients - my surgeon's is extremely low at .3%. Many surgeons are comfortable with complication rates 10x that. Hope this helps and good luck!

​@pannamal5182 I think you should leave that decision to the doctor. Every patient is different. They the doctors know what is best. I had surgery LTH replacement on AUG. 28. I never had to take oxycoden although I had a prescription for it. I only took 8 pradalol total for the first week, then the occasional Tylenol.

Did you have Epidural or General anesthesia?

Kinda both?!? I had what they call a spinal block (that's a single shot whereas an epidural is a constant feed catheter). And then they gave me Propofol which is known as "Milk of Amnesia" because patients do not remember anything. It was weird because in reading the surgery notes, they documented conversations with me that I have no recollection of having.

I went home same day as stated in the video, but some people spend a night or two in the hospital. Depends on many factors.

There will be a mild discomfort the discomfort or pain will not be zero. Your body has been traumatized. I felt like something was done but not really pain.

@Life411 I had my surgery on AUG 28 2023. I had it in MONTREAL privately as the waiting list was too long and I was in pain and stuck in the house. I went home AUG30 7 am. I had the CLSC NURSE COME TO THE HOUSE FOR THE DRESSING. CLSC IS part of the Medicare. The physiotherapist wassupposed to come twice a week but as of now he only visited twice. I had my xray Oct 4 the doctor will contact me by phone Oct 19. I have private insurance and feel I need more physio. I had a right hip replacement 2001 so now both hips are replaced. It seems you are doing very well.

Hi Vanda, thanks for the additional background. You say that you feel you need additional PT, I just wonder why because some surgeons like mine don't recommend formal PT after THR. Walking is the best exercise and of course I've done my own PT per se by working on my overall fitness and working to improve things with my hip when I see areas of weakness, etc. I do have some hip-friendly exercise videos if you're interested. @@Life411My right hip was replaced in 2001. I had pain in my left hip for a long time , was using a cane ,my left leg was shorter and I was not going out of the house. I find it difficult to get rid of the bad habits. I do not feel secure going outside. I tend to have to think how I walk.

Toradol (IM NSAID)... was a life saver blessing for me!

Interesting, I don't hear of Toradol very often. I used Diclofenac and Meloxicam which helped me get by until THR. Just curious if there was any particular reason for Toradol over the others? What part of the world are you in? Thanks for watching!

@@Life411 Had the hip and knee surgeries in Albuquerque, another knee in Tucson. My friend had hip surgery today and she called and said they gave her Toradol and it really helped, did not make her groggy. She is in Michigan.
