What to Expect in a Neck Pain & Cervical Spine Conditions C&P Exam | VA Disability

In this video Leah is explaining the process of a C&P exam for veterans with neck pain or cervical spine conditions. She emphasizes that the process should not be a surprise as it is straightforward, though it can be confusing. Leah mentions that veterans will receive a packet with details about the exam, including the appointment time, location, and examiner information. The key component of the exam is the Disability Benefit Questionnaire (DBQ), which she displays and explains in detail. This questionnaire covers various aspects such as diagnosis, symptoms, range of motion, and impact on daily functions. She also touches on other topics like flare-ups, functional loss, radiculopathy, and assistive devices. Additionally, Leah discusses the possibility of a medical opinion being requested to determine if the condition is service-related.

As a veteran with a service connected cervical spine injury I can say the VA ratings for neck and back are a joke. I have been going to treatments nonstop for over two years. Injections, radio frequency ablation, PT, cognitive behavioral therapy, and being prescribed several different drugs to help with the pain. Chronic pain, fatigue, insomnia and irritability has taken over my life. I make it through work with 7.5ml and 10ml hydrocodone. Have given up all social activities and hobbies. I spend my evenings and weekends just trying to recover so I can make it to work in my commercial HVAC job that irritates my injury everyday. Point being, the range of motion test is a joke and no where shows the true affects. I am currently working on a letter for my senators and congressman/congresswoman to look into the ratings of these types of injuries for veterans. Semper Fi

Sounds like the effects of my C-Spine injury. I'm 60 now and it deteriorated badly June '22. Reason being, later in life the bone canal the spinal cord is in narrows in the C-spine. It can then push against the spinal cord narrowing it. I have 2x herniated discs around C4 and they pushed into the spinal cord affecting all kinds of functions. Anyways I would definitely take care of this thru the VA cuz it will likely get much worse with age. I'm taking Gabapentin 300mg for these symptoms and Trazadone for sleep. Speak to your VA doctor or request a new one. After 6 months my doctor finally sent me to neurosurgery nurse for xrays, MRIs etc. Showing severe spinal stenosis (cord pinched). Even then she didn't book a surgical review. This past Jul I explained this to my doctor and he booked a new neurosurgeon nurse. She looked at my films and exclaimed wholly cow, you're messed up. She scheduled C-spine operation to widen the canal and pins and rods and stuff were used. I"m 6 weeks post-op and feeling has returned to my L side. Still have balance and walking issues and am looking forward to PT to resolve it. I can feel warmth in my hands and feet for first time in 2 years. Just saying you gotta pursue this and be your own advocate because it will get much worse in the future. It will retire you and possibly bedridden. The VA gave me a walker. I used to run marathons so I'd rather stumble around. Looking forward to be able to do chores and work on stuff then take my boat out again when my balance returns. Speak with your VA doc and use MyHealth evet to send messages and condition updates weekly. The nurse will review them and pass them to your doc. Squeaky wheel gets the treatments. Get on it cuz it's going to get much worse. Don't waste any more time. Best of luck!

@@drewodessa2483wish you the best. My neurosurgeon told me to go as long as I can stand it because when he does surgery he is going to fuse from C7 to C3. I’m doing research on disc replacement now but not seeing a lot of positive stuff. Pain management stepped up the radio frequency ablation to more areas of my cervical spine. Still hurting though.

Hi, Thank you for the video. You are a lifesaver😊! At 6:45 through 6:53 you mentioned that the C&P examiner will have the patient move and "help" the patient to move". Is this correct? Why would an examiner physically touch and physically push the patient? Shouldn't the ROM test evaluate the patient's ability to move and their ROM, not whether the examiner can physically force the patient to move. The DBQ only shows "Active", ROM, not "Semi-Active", or Passive ROM. Please forgive me, I'm not trying be disrespectful with the above concerns. I've heard about a few horrific C&P exam experiences where the examiner force-moved a patient beyond their limit. I inquired with the VA and was informed that the examiners shouldn't be doing that. Thoughts please.

That is how physical exams work. Not just for VA purposes. It is standard medical care to test passive and active range of motion because although people may not actively be able to move a joint to a specific range, passive motion tells the evaluator what the joint is capable of. Veterans often act horrified about this, but this is a very important element of the evaluation process in both VA disability claims and in medicine in general and is the standard of care.

I have an ETS physical from 2006 notating chronic neck pain. I also had an incapacitating episode where I woke up and I couldn't move my neck because of stiffness and pain, in service (06). As a result of that episode, that led the chronic pain that I mentioned at my ETS physical. They also did an x-ray where it indicated loss/flatting of normal lordosis. I also experienced left shoulder pain, which I figured out years later was really nerve issues from my neck. I now have degenerative disc disease, spondylitis, two disk dissections. Had a crap first C&P exam. I'm awaiting the results of the most recent supplemental. Have you had success connecting chronic pain w/loss of normal lordosis and the above conditions?

My examiner requested x-rays for my shoulder & knee. Was informed that they may or may not schedule the x-ray depending if they need it. Is this normal? Should I request a new appt?
