What to Expect in a Hypothyroidism C&P Exam | VA Disability

In this video Leah explains hypothyroidism and its relevance to VA disability evaluations. Hypothyroidism, often autoimmune (Hashimoto's thyroiditis), is characterized by an underactive thyroid, leading to symptoms like weight gain, fatigue, muscle weakness, menstrual changes, and memory issues. Leah discusses how hypothyroidism can be primary (diagnosed in active duty) or secondary (caused/worsened by another service-connected disorder). She advises veterans on the Compensation and Pension (C&P) exam process following a disability claim, emphasizing the role of the Disability Benefits Questionnaire (DBQ) in documenting symptoms and their impact on daily life and work.

    Hypothyroidism is a" PRESUMPTIVE" condition with Agent Orange exposure. No nexus is required if you meet the Vietnam exposure requirements. Minimum rating is 30% with diagnosis and treatment.

    I’ve been diagnosed with hypothyroidism 40 years ago. Served in Vietnam. I’ve been taking levothyroxine for 40 years. Which keeps my thyroid function at a normal level. I submitted a claim and had it denied. So if it’s under control they deny it. So what do I do to have the claim approved. I would need to stop taking my meds? Crazy! 11:40

    Hey sir I am sorry to hear this. Hypothyroidism is a condition that is presumptive to agent orange exposure. If your levels are normal but only because of medication, then you should still be considered as a person suffering from the condition. Have you discussed this with a legal professional?

    Great video, thanks. Do you have any information on a rating for a complete thyroidectomy? It seems odd not to be included in the rating schedule, considering that the thyroid gland affects every cell in the body. I'll be on meds my entire life and have almost every symptom of hypothyroidism.

    Is there a way to get the symptoms of hypothyroidism rated as a disability? I have a zero percent rating, all of my blood work has been normal for years, but I still experience all of the major symptoms, i.e. extreme fatigue, etc. I can't get diagnosed with chronic fatigue since I have a thyroid disorder, but the extreme fatigue is debilitating and impacts my entire life.

    I was rated 10% for hashimoto's to include chronic fatigue (cfs) in 2008. I recently went to a c&p exam for a rate increase. I don't fully understand the updated rating schedule. For example I could end up with a cfs rating of 20% and then hashimoto would be rated at 0%. Is that roughly how the rating schedule works now?

  • @prestigeveteranmedical

    @prestigeveteranmedical

    Жыл бұрын

    That is a great question. CFS is a separate condition and if you have fatigue related to your thyroid condition it would likely just be regular fatigue not a syndrome as the syndrome itself must be diagnosed when all other causes are ruled out. As far as the residuals are concerned you would want to follow up with a legal professional on that but it is my understanding that of approved those residuals would be rated on their schedule for ratings.

    If I am taking medication that helps regulate my thyroid. Should I not take this prior to the exam so they see the effects it causes or should I just state that I am on the medication and its currently regulated due to it? I keep having to get the doses raised due to my body adjusting to it. I also have to rely heavily on it. If I miss a dose, my muscles tighten, joints lock up, fatigue, many more issues happen. Just don't want the fact it is currently regulate due to the high dose I am on affect my chances.

    Sir I would never recommend to discontinue a medication . They will likely consider your severity based upon the condition with medication control. You may want to follow up with a legal professional on this.
