Making all his viewers get a glimpse of how deep character customization is in PF2 and want to have a look at your channel. Step 3: Post a guide video meant for 5E players looking at trying PF2 to hope they convert. You sir, are a master strategist.

    Nonat briefly mentioned this but this is very important: At level 1 you are not a hero, but a potential hero who has yet to realize their potential. The average bandit or ruffian (level 2) can kick your ass and going up against a gang leader (level 7) is suicide. Manage your expectations accordingly.

    Is that not true of most systems? Hell PF2e seems actually a bit more lenient on it, since getting crit on full HP by an even-leveled enemy is likely to kill you, and will at least bring you to 0 HP, whereas in PF2e, you don't need to be particularly hardy to survive a crit if you're on full HP, though you will be hurting. True, level disparities are more impactful, but I can't really think of many (at least within level-based) games where Level 1 you're already a hero, just because of how much variance impacts things at low levels. Maybe 4e, though what I remember of playing it, it was similar to the PF2e "you can survive a crit, but that doesn't mean you're not in danger" philosophy.

    As a brand new pathfinder GM I would love a video on how to run a game without getting stressed about looking up all actions and their resulting consequences. In dnd we just rolled on the skills but here everything has an action and detailed rules and although that's what I wanted, I lose immersion a lot during a session.

    It's basically the same thing in Pathfinder as it is in D&D, it's just fleshed out and explained more! I know it is common to hear people say this but as things come up just make a decision in the moment and look later, you'll forget and have to make a decision on the fly again later and again look up the rule. But guess what? Eventually you will remember and won't have to look them up any more, unless you have multiple editions of D&D, 2 editions of Pathfinder, and COUNTLESS other rules systems in your head. In fact, in your first few sessions keep your book in a CONVENIENTLY inconvenient location so you aren't tempted to go grab it and look something up, just go with what feels right in the moment and have fun!

    On my introduction notes to my players, I told them there is no way I'm going to remember 600-something pages of rules AND I am NOT going to look up every rule when it comes up. I'll make my best guess and later I'll read it again and if I was wrong, I'll let everyone know. We will not back track on a rule but start using the rule correctly moving forward. I also told them that I believe part of the fun is the real danger that your character can be killed and thus I will let them die. But remember, it is ok to run from a battle you can't win. Imagine a your PC has 2 HP left, 2 others are at dying 2, another is already dead, and there are still 2 red dragons alive..... and it's their turn. Suddenly, the dragons get scared so bad that they just croak in fear. Yay. You won the battle and you are able the revive the dead one while the others restore hit points. REALLY? How did they happen? I'm all for helping the party when I can but it has to be conceptually realistic.

    I'm about halfway through with Age of Ashes campaign, and these are my tips based on my experiences: - Buy a condition card deck. Or make your own. Many people think it is just a gimmick, but no. From the very first session, both critters and your players would get conditions every fight. And if you think you can manage that with your memory or scraps of paper, good luck with that. Around 5-7 level, every harder fight would leave your characters with up to 4 different conditions. At my gaming table, at 10th level, sometimes even six - for instance - wounded, dying, blinded, two different persistent damage and clumsy. At the end of big fights, your cleric/healer starts a weird kind minigame of which player should be helped with which condition to keep your party alive. Also, having multiple cards laying in front of your character, makes significant impact on your morale. My players are much less eager to start new fights when they see a full hand of cards crippling their character. - Archive of Nethys is your friend, and every player is allowed at my gaming table to freely use his/her phone to check the website for info. - Have multiple copies of Core Rulebook and some other supplements, either pdf of physical version. Be prepared you and your players would spend significant amount of time checking rules, much more time than, let's say DnD 5ed. - Use page numbers for reference with every item or rule, so when my party finds a wand of heal, I say to them: "You found wand of heal, page 597." - Learn how Stealth works, make some notes. For me, it was the most confusing part of the rules. And still is. Watch some YT videos explaining it. - Also, check rules for flanking. Be prepared your players would have problems understanding how it works on their first session. - When you are players, make every player responsible for some part of game. Sometimes fights get a little bit crunchy, so It helps to keep all people engages. In my 4 player party the roles are: Condition Card handler, Spell Effect database checker, party equipment manager, who also helps me with finding rules in core rulebook, and a guy who manages minis and battlemats, and also plays some friendly npcs during fights.

    As Will Swanson said: Character creation is best placed at Session 0. The tools you suggested are great for that, I personally use Pathbuilder since I really enjoyed the PF1e version and think the 2e version is great as well. Even though the feat system offers a lot more choice than other systems out there, it's reasonable if you just take them as they come and not overthink all the possibilities you have. A tip I always tell my players is to not think of all actions of your characters in a mechanical way, but to just describe the actions your character wants to take and if there is a dice roll needed, I'll ask for that or ask for the relevant modifier for the secret check. Mechanics are important but you are playing a character, a hero, a catfolk with a cat familiar looking for another cat as a pet. Not everything has to be mechanics.

    tbh on your first point I think the best solution to character creation - regardless of experience - is to have a Session Zero for the campaign. That way everyone can talk to each other and to the GM about what kinds of characters would have a compatible vibe with each other, what fits the flavor of the campaign, and what kinds of things to expect. It's a good way to avoid accidentally creating a ranger who's great at fighting undead in dungeons when the enemies you run into are going to be mostly humanoids in above-ground environments.

    To me a session 0 should not only be about rules and character creation, but it should jump straight into the campaign to get the ball rolling. Not a Pathfinder player yet, but explaining the rules of the table and creating characters shouldn't take long especially if the players have been asked ahead of time what type of campaign they want to play.

  • @willswanson1840

    @willswanson1840

    3 жыл бұрын

    Jumping straight into the campaign is the exact thing Session 0 was conceived to *not* do. When I'm behind the screen, I use S0 to get everyone on the same page about house rules and the basic flavor of the campaign, which like you said doesn't take very long. What can take a long time is the PCs talking with each other about how to realize each of their concepts within the context of a suitably balanced party, the PCs talking with the GM about what kinds of choices are likely to be appropriate or useful, everyone getting a feel for each other out of character, everyone getting a feel for the RP vibe of the party in character, and transforming the modified character concepts into stat sheets. It's really easy to underestimate how long it takes to build a new character, especially for new players, and if the expectation is that it'll be fast and significant progress will be made in the actual adventure, that puts a lot of unfair and unhelpful pressure on the newbie. There's no reason S0 needs to have story progress past the PCs introducing themselves to each other at the local tavern. There's a reason it's numbered zero and not one.

    THIS! ONE THOUSAND TIMES THIS!!! I'm not as familiar with PF2 as I was with PF1, and even that was not a whole lot, but I do remember that some of the older Adventure Paths(APs) DEFINITELY would benefit from a session zero, as ANY long form campaign would, because some things would work MUCH better and some things would just be VERY VERY HARD to have fun playing, but as long as the players know what to expect if they STILL want to play that difficult character they KNOW ahead of time.

    Two addendums about the Archives of Nethys that I feel are important to point out. First, it consolidates all the options from across all the books into one place. You want to know what feats and spells are available to your Wizard? All the feats from all the books are listed in the Archive's Wizard feats table, and there's a list of all the Arcane spells in one place just a few clicks away. Second, they have a search bar. Need to double check exactly how one of your shiny new spells works but forgot to note which book it's from? You don't even need to go to the Arcane spells list to find it, just put the spell's name in the search bar. Or if you're a GM with a bad memory like me, I've found that searching some rarely-used rule on the Archives is often faster than flipping through the book looking for it.

    To expand on crits, a nat 20 doesn't auto crit and a nat 1 doesn't auto crit fail. Instead they make your roll 1 degree of success better or worse. (this is important to note if you're fighting something well above or well below your level). Also just get used to going down - with the amount of crits you're gunna take, it's gunna happen at least once a combat. The system is built for it.

    A thing that was mentioned slightly but deserves it's own point in my opinion. PF2 has a quadratic power scale, every increment you try to punch above or below your current level is a MASSIVE gap compared to something like DnD5E. In 5e, a group of four level 5 adventurers will (with a modicum of difficulty) be able to kill a level 9 dragon; in PF2, a group of four level 5 adventurers will be in harms way facing down a level 7 drake, with a level 9 dragon being veritable suicide unless they're very well (and specialty) equipped for that match. EXPECTATIONS NEED TEMPERING, OR YOU WILL SUFFER! Once the ball gets rolling, and you have realistic expectations of what you can/can't do, it's very fun, and there's a lot you can do in time

The complexity of PF2E is like a double-edged sword for me. True, it could cause many people to just go for the free version but this actuality works better. Many pirates will make it available anyway (illegally). Making an official free website let's Paizo ensure accurate info is out in the wild and not tainted with viruses. It also does bring awareness via search engines and such. But most importantly, reading it on a website is clunky. The site is designed to be a reference, not an only resource. You can not just read straight through like you can in q book. It's often hard to know what to click to get to the info you want and a search bar usually doesn't help much it gives you 9 million results that is almost somewhat remotely possibly maybe somehow related to your question. I read through the website while waiting for my hard copy to arrive and very anxious to get it. It helps me to be able to quickly see 2 pages at once which is way more information than what can be viewed on a single computer screen.

    Looks like a better use of action economy by creating an actual economy to be used, in which case I'd hand out action tokens for players to signify how many they take per turn, so that nothing is confused or forgotten.

    Most important thing about any TTRPG. Communicate, Communicate, Communicate! It doesn't matter what TTRPG you are playing. It doesn't matter if you are the game master or one of the party members. Communicate what you want. Communicate what you need. Communicate what you like. Communicate what you don't like. Did someone do something you don't like? Let them know. They likely want everyone to be having fun unless they are trolling, and statistics show that trolls are in the minority. Unless someone is made aware that what they are doing upsets another, they will continue doing it. Did someone do something you liked? Let them know. Whether party member or game master, everyone wants to feel included and appreciated. Positive feedback does wonders for any one person or group. Do you want something? Do you want a change? Do you feel dissatisfied? Let others know. Let's say you are a player not liking your class, ancestry, background, spells, or character. It happens, especially when trying new things. When and if it happens to you, inform your game master and request a change, a new character maybe.

    Another great video (and another comment for the algorithm). The only thing I would add, but that might be better served in a new video), is the social contract. Like you mentioned a couple of times, different people have different preferences of how to play the game. And none of those are invalid, but some of them can clash. So the well known session 0 where you go over what people expect of the game as a group might be an interesting topic for a video.

  • @DanTalksGames
    @DanTalksGames3 жыл бұрын

    One thing I'd note ala premade adventures, be aware Fall of Plaguestone and Age of Ashes are considered incredibly brutal for newer players. They were released at the system's launch and are considered overturned due to the designers themselves not fully nailing down the system yet. They're not insurmountable, but they're generally considered very unforgiving and can be harsh on people learning the system (which is...not great marketing on Paizo's part because they were supposed to be introductory adventures. They could stand to revisit and retune them down the line, but that's a whole separate soapbox) If you wanna do APs, Abomination Vaults is considered the creme of the crop at the moment, as NoNat said. There's a standalone adventure that naturally segues into it called Troubles in Otari (which in turn the Beginner Box naturally segues into, if you're running that), most people consider this the both current best content path in the system, and the best introduction to it for new players.

    I'll suggest another thing: if you want to pay the guys at Paizo, they do it every year around end of May to beggining of July a sale at Humble Bundle, that gives you a bunch of books for a very low value. The sale is up at the time of this post, and it will keep going for around 2 more days. Just for 5 dollars, you get the Core Rulebook, enough to play any campaign; plus a few adventures, including 2 episodes of the Extinction Curse AP and a One-Shot. And you can direct every single penny from it to charity, so it's for both your fun and for a good cause!

    I've been working on my character for about 2 weeks I think, and I'm still not quite done. The game is supposed to start tonight, but it will be more of a .5 session according to the DM. Most of what I have left to decide on at this point though is gear, so I suppose that isn't too bad. Way too many options available especially since we are starting at lvl 3 and using Free Archetype. digging through the information felt like that 7-page menu at my local Mexican Restaurant... Wildeborne Grippli/Oread Storm Order Druid with the Geomancer Archetype although I was torn between that and Oozemorph for starting out considering I went with the Miresoul Ancestry Feat, so my Grippli is already kind of malleable. I will likely take on Oozemorph later after meeting the requirements for leaving Geomancer unless I change my mind before tonight. My boyfriend was trying to help me last night and we got a lot farther than I was, but yeah I still need to finish my gear.

I just wanna ask.. what books of Pathfinder (2e) exist untill now, i'm interested in playing, so i wish to know at least their names. By your channel, it seems like Paizo is constantly producing new books, so it would really help if you could tell me what books exist ant what i should get for a complete Pathfinder experience (i'm the forever DM, so probably the answer is "all", but yeah :/).
