What to do when your African Cichlids Breed?

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

In this video, I will be explaining what to do when your african cichlids breed.
I won't be going into detail about HOW to get them to breed, as I already have a video on the subject.
This is a very common question I get at my local fish store. I separated this video into sections, depending on where you want to take your fish keeping adventure
1:13 How to tell if your cichlid is pregnant
2:17 Finding out what you want to do
3:18 Option 1 : Don't want to breed fish but it happened anyways
4:17 Option 2 : Casual Fish Breeder
5:22 Option 3 : Big Fish Breeding operation
9:45 Setting up your growing tanks

Of the 7, 2 are jet black, 3 are vertically striped & the other 2 are pale w no markings as of yet. The survivors are still quite small, 1/4 inch - 1/2. Can't wait till they grow up. I know they are from the 2 adult fish because they are the only fish in that tank. I'll post pics of the survivors when they get bigger. Love your vids. Stay well & prosper.

I have my 1st holding female. I am going to let her go to term. She is isolated in her own tank now. 3 Questions. 1. Do you continue to do water changes while while she is holding? If so, how often and how much? 2. I am using a small canister filter (tank already cycled) with a filter sock over the intake. It doesn't seem to move a lot of water out the exhaust port, but I don't know what is good for the African fry. Will this be ok? 3. Keep lights on or off? I've raised American Cichlids many times and I changed nothing on the way I did things in the tank, but it seems African Cichlids are a bit more sensitive to things. Thanks...

Hi Olivier, It's possible for females to hold unfertilized eggs. I guess they get bored without the males lol. You'll know after 3 days. That's usually how long it takes for the unfertilized eggs to start to decay and either be swallowed by the mother, or spit out and eaten by her friends. Unless my memory is failing in my old age (definite possibility!), I don't think you've ever done a video on how you pack and ship - and get the fish ready as well. Us fish geeks love to see the inner workings of the fish industry. Right now my Sewellia loaches are breeding like rabbits - I plan on spreading them to all my tanks. I don't try to breed my fish - I just try to make them happy.

That's definitely in my future plans 😉 I'm shipping out fish next week, you've motivated me to film it!

I have so many baby cichlids and have tried to give them away! I don't know what to do. I'm in Arizona. The pet store doesn't want them.

Hi Sarah, Have you tried giving them away on social media? Or on Craigslist (or the website that's active in your region) ? Maybe check with a specialized fish store 😉

@@QuebecCichlides thanks for the quick response! I haven't tried Craigslist.. I will. I'm so neurotic about them going to homes that won't give them proper care. It would be kinder to cull (gasp!😲) them, but I couldn't do that! I have two 65gal tanks, and several 10s. I'll keep as many as I can and stop saving the babies from the tanks.

@@sarahbrome5564 Don't worry about it. Before hand, when you're chatting with the people, ask them questions about the tank they will put them in. You're allowed to refuse to sell to someone ;-) What I've noticed as well, is that when you have something to give away, people won't just take one. They'll take them in schools... meaning that you will be able to clear out your tanks quicker.

Shocked my cichlids have 100+ babies. They are the only two fish other than a pleco which I took out. Enjoy watching them grow?
