    Another nice video with important advise for mbunas and always with your smile and atitude!!!I keep mbunas in my 3 tanks!!A 65 gallon community tank along with South American cichlids,Tanganyika and some non cichlids like silver dollars and silver sharks,some loaches!!!It has to do with the fish,the size,the age,the tank capacity,the water parameters,the filtration,what variety of food you feed them...if you put fish in same age and size you can make a community tank with awesome appeareance mixing different kinds that can respect each other and live well together and they can be active,happy and healthy!!But this can't work for anyone,you need knowledge,experience and luck!!!I keep 3 mbunas,8 peacocks-aulonocaras,4 gouramis and 1 silver shark in my 60 gallon tank and everything is fine,it worked also!!And in my 55 gallon tank I keep 19 mbunas,1 venustus,2 aulonocaras,1 surinam geophagus and 1 festae and they are like a family,a school-no bullying,all are healthy and active!!!We can try and see what happens,fish can be a surprise!!!Cheers!!!

Have a 20 gal tank arriving soon and need to cycle and rehome them ASAP. I'm committed to getting this right but man... I have SO much respect for aquarium hobbyists now. Proper care is no joke! Love watching your vids. I had a red devil pass away at 15 years old who I bred a few times. Tank was empty with just a plecostomous so I made it an mbuna mainly tank. I have 3 flamebacks in there too 1m2f. I have a small female Texan in there also she's only a dither so the bigger fish don't kill the small electric blues as they're tiny. I'll take her out in a few weeks. I didn't know about The frontosa not being compatible because I out a small one on and he's been fine so far. The rest are albino red cap zebras 2m1f, salousi 1m1f, and the other 2 look like jalo reef, they have yellow tails. Oh and 2 electric yellows .. All are doing well. I'd love the flamebacks to colour up more but not sure they will with the Texan there same sizes btw. And biggest fish in tank (3-4") the rest are between 1&2 inches. I bought them all small so they'd grow up together. All advice welcome!! @quebeccichlides

    Love my mbuna tank but after some years of keeping them bottom dwellers catfish loaches are not necessary.Sure you can keep them with mbuna but don't think they can live off of left overs! Many of times you have to feed them at night b/c mbuna are greedy and if they can see the food they will eat it all up before the bottom dwellers can their barbells on it. And if catfish get too hungry I have seen them attack my cichlids at night! So the bottom dwellers also add to bio-load too! But catfish are cool to keep as long as their needs are met. What i do now is add snails not just any snails nerite snails and an army of MTS snails.No longer have to feed at night and the snails take care of themselves with less bio-load. Great video.

    Looked at this video 3 times in one morning lol. So I have an 75 gallon mbuna tank that's housed by 6 ice blue zebra, 3 yellow tail acei, 2 ob red zebra, 1 chewere, 1 cobue, 1 yellow lab, 1 cobalt blue, 1 rusty and 1 red tail shark. My question is I seen a beautiful juvenile African cichlid in petsmart that they said is possibly a zebra but I'm 99% sure it's a dragon blood peacock and absolutely fell in love with it. Can I add it (just one) to my setup? Hopefully it'll work as I think its beautiful just not sure how compatible they are with mbuna

  • @QuebecCichlides

    @QuebecCichlides

    Not at all. Livingstonii need a bigger tank to thrive. They will either get aggressive or lethargic because it's too small for them. When they get a little bigger, you might have to bring them back to the LFS to avoid them suffering from dwarfism

    Hi, i realise i’m like 3 years too late… But i have a 30G that is all set up as a community tank but i wanna change. it’s 3 foot long. I wanna get 6/8 Mbunas, Yellow Labs, Zebras, Jonannii, Saulosi, Tangerine, Pindani etc, all juveniles, and then i’m moving out soon and wanna get a 55G 4 foot tank in my new house as it will be my own and not parents so more space and then when that tank is cycled move then over and get another 10 or so mbunas like Rustys and Acei and then a few more so as to not ruin the cycle, what are your thoughts on this? think for the few months i could deal with 6/8 to see if i get on with them before spending lots of a bigger tank and such x

    I have one of those rare mixtures that has worked well for me. I have a 75 gallon tank with about 20 Mbunas and more hiding places than I have fish. There are 3 non Mbuna species that live with them and they have blended in well. One is a jewel cichlid from the same region, one is a Firemouth from central America and the other is a Red Devil from central America. I know that the Red Devil will make most of you cringe but I put him in last after the tank was well established and he has blended in nicely. He was just a baby when he was introduced and about average size to the rest of the fish. Sometimes it's more about the individual fish's temperament than it is the species so we'll have to see how it pans out in the long run. The other two went into the tank with the Mbunas when I first set it up about a year ago so they are like family members. As for the Red Devil, he has to get past my top 5 tank bosses before he can ever become a problem and he has a long way to go! I'm hoping by the time he gets significantly bigger than they are, that he has been in the tank long enough to view them as family members instead of competition or food. I'll have to keep a close eye on that. My Socolofi is currently the tank boss with my Johanni, my Maingano, my Auratus and my bumblebee to follow. All of them are very aggressive and can handle themselves against much larger fish. As for dieting, I give them a nice mixture of veggies and light protein. Then I feed my central Americans krill separately. My PH is around 7.8 and my water temperature is 78-80 degrees. They all seem happy but in case it doesn't work out in the long run I'll have your video to refer to!

    I like how you put it. I had the idea to write one called "what to do when your fish breed"... but I think your title is better :P Long story short : If your friends won't take them, maybe your local fish store will. If they're nice, big and ideally pure bred, they might even give you some store credit in exchange.

    Hi! I have a 90 gallon Mbuna aquarium, with about twenty-five yellow labs, a few Zebras, a Dolfin (I know she's not an Mbuna) an ACI, and a full grown Bumble Bee. Strange mix, but they all kind of grew up together and work well! My question is, what is your opinion on adding a few 5 Bar Tretocephalus? I really love these fish, but I know they're from Tanganyika. You didn't mention them so I figured I would ask. Thank you so much for your videos! 💜

    I am setting up a 55 gallon tank with African Cichlids but I sure don't want to inappropriately mix non-compatible ones. So can Mbuna be mixed in with any species of Tanganyikans at all? If not, I won't, and so as to avoid unnecessary non- compatibility issues, which species would you recommend I mix in together with this in mind: My tank will have plenty of live plants, floaters, cave rocks (for hiding), oxygenated bubbles. Not to overcrowd either so does the 1" per gallon of fish rule of thumb apply to these african cichlids? I ask because in some youtube videos it seems like some people have an awful lot of cichlids in their tank...or is that the way to go with these fish? I want a nice variety of colored cichlids. I'm starting with small 1" to 1.25 " or 1.5'" max. May I also add: a Pleco and/or Cory catfish and/or snails? Lastly, may my Jack Dempsey Cichlid join the group? He's almost 2". I'm open to your suggestions as to what other species, if any will get along and not be attacked. Lastly, what variety of food do you recommend if I have a mix of picky eaters? PLEASE, I implore you to reply using my contact form at my web site: www.aquariumsbytr.com (I provide tank cleaning services here in New Jersey) as I most likely will NOT see your reply here on youtube. Thank you and be well and safe. Thomas
