I had a mental breakdown when my bubble popped that lasted years and still sucks to this day. I can totally understand why people don’t really want to know the truth.

As a parent of a 17-year-old, a teacher, and as a 55-year-old individual, I have observed the many key moments in life where disillusionment plays a part. There are many for a young child: Your first day of school, the time your "friend" does something mean and betrays you, perhaps the moment your parent(s) betrays you (that one really sucks), and, if your parents are really incompetent, the realization that you are mostly alone in the world. But, as a child, you have your future to look forward to. And then comes adolescence. You realize your teachers are a bunch of idiots, your parents are not grownups, and indeed, there really is no such thing as a grownup. The work you do in school seems meaningless and pointless, etc. But at least you still have your future to look forward to. You go to college. You learn stuff. Then you get a job and a group of friends and you spend nearly every night drinking and having a good time. This goes on for a while and then you get married and have children. That consumes your time for a while and then comes middle age. Your body starts going downhill so that's not much of a source of hope. You're not particularly attractive to anyone anymore so that part of life kind of goes by the wayside. And your choice of career turns out not to be as fulfilling as you once imagined. Your children are getting older and don't need you so much so your role as a parent subsides. But you still have retirement to look forward to. "I'm going to travel. I'll have all this time off. I'm going to do all these fun things I've always wanted to do." But then your energy declines. And a lot of that lack of energy has a psychological cause. Things just aren't that much fun anymore. You're running out of things to enjoy. This is life. This is what nobody wants to talk about. I dare not tell my 17-year-old this is what the world offers. He's too young. It's too much. Let him find out for himself. (Like the lecturer relates, "You try to create a little safety, a little comfort, but you know deep down inside it's not real.") But hope is not lost. All of this disillusionment, if you're open and willing, will lead you to turn within and find out what really matters. Don't believe the lies of the world. Idols will make you cry every single time. Turn within.

I see pain and fear in his eyes..I feel the pain daily as I lie in my bed running out of money trying to figure out what ,who or where to go or do next

We have been lied about almost every important issue in life! The 3 biggest lies is the place we live on, history and the political system.

This is wild. Filmed 7 years ago and he brought up fact checking and then a virus and how we're not afraid of them. "It's a virus?! Okay, so what?!" Response. And he addresses the corruption and cognitive dissidents and why people will continue believing something that they probably know is wrong.

This is the fatal flaw of social sound bytes. Cold weather stresses the body, setting off stress reactions. In a healthy body, these make them stronger, so cold weather is good for them. In an inflamed, or metabolically challenged body, it opens them up to viral attacks ( compromised immunity) but, the “cold” is a result of virus, just not the whole story as with all his other examples…

Seems to me this is tilting at windmills. Like the organs in our bodies, our societies depend on specialists to accomplish cooperative ventures. Our organs demand on specialized support and specialist functions that stand up in conditions of adversity or inadequacy. And yes, this often puts an unfair burden on other specialists, but the total collective advances. Similarly, our bodies have a simbiotic support system that is operating outside the organ-structured protocols, and nature pulls back the curtain with chronic illnesses or super powers when those distinctions are activated. Life will hold us accountable to the duality and responsibility for it. Party on Dudes, be good to each other.

A fascinating presentation, calling for numerous repeated viewings. I've always been fascinated by "the big reveal," and was deeply impressed by "The Wizard of Oz" as a child. There's another such moment that has never left me, namely the bit in "A Wrinkle in Time" where Meg, who has believed all along that as soon as she rescued her father all would be well, discovers that her dad isn't really all she thought he was, and that she would have to start making decisions for herself. That always packs a punch, because it's absolutely authentic and part of every person's experience.

Anyone above the age of consent who has to be told at a lecture that "not all that glitters is gold" is beyond help. This is a hard life, but it is harder when you are stupid.

Harsh words. We all start off uninformed and using senses that are shunned and criticized in public. We are taught formulas to compensate that work with our specific tutors but will fail in life’s social settings where mentors may not be available. And the social landscape is huge, almost no one can master it smoothly without pitfalls, but some are trained to be safe and avoid those learning experiences, which makes it harder to recognize them and master them. Be kind, give constructive criticism, if you see a better path. Party on Dude, be good to each other.

I'm not going to be all intellectual and say bad things about this man. He was trying to deal with the fact that almost everything we have been told is a LIE. I remember when I realized that everything was an untruth . But after the shock subsided I was free to think new thoughts and make my life better.

It’s a good title but just ends up saying that everything is a lie except identity politics orthodoxy. “I was a sinner and now I am saved, follow me and you can be saved too.” Yeah right.

Nicely put! Life as we know is actually a complete lie.... but most people don’t want to acknowledge it! Yes- we have shelter our children from the absolute truth- but i think a good parent at this time should gently awaken them- and yes, movies are the perfect way!

@@01ProFfs I'm pretty sure you just answered your own question there Yandi... If having something that doesn't = good, then perhaps not having it has a chance of improving things. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that there should be a ban on any and all illusion of any kind. I'm just saying that if we were to begin treating everything with rational logic and an abundance of realism and truth it would make- making the right choices for a better future for all, easier and thus theoretically more likely. Disillusionment leads to cognitive dissonance and for some if not many that can lead to years if not a life time of mental illness of some sort.... I guess the real question here would be what good is disillusionment doing for this world? Idk food for thought I guess, or not... Make whatever you want out of it I suppose.

We use need of wanting to feel connected and belonging we manipulate it for our own selfish need. Put our faith and material to fill that void and lost our humanity on the way. We live an idea of ourselves not for ourselves. well I would rather love and be good and just and die alone on the street. Been in a mention surrounded by things. At least I was straight to myself how many people can say that

My right ear is not happy. It's like a three-way and my right ear is just watching.

It requires a change in perspective. It means that our current material perspective is incorrect and is the very reason some of us can perceive the lie we live and must live as long as we assume everything to be made of matter. As we already can see materialism offers no principle to guide us because it has no relevant focus. The result is, we must fake civility, all of it. This faking is the reason we have never properly defined civility or the principles of existence which would naturally support and enforce a civil culture. It is to say that currently, all aspects of governmentally enforced civility is faked civility and requires the application of force, a contradiction to the internal growth of understanding natural civility requires. Contradictions are the violation of our first principle of all existence, non-contradiction.

This guy mentions the Wizard of Oz in just about all his speeches, but I'm willing to bet he hasn't got a clue what the Wizard of Oz story was actually about. Every one of his speeches is about the classical idea of feminism and racism, treating the issue like it's one of the most prevalent issues of the Western, civilized world. The funny thing is, it is mainstream television, music and movies which indoctrinate these ideas of racial, gender specific thinking into us. Yet, he focuses the blame on how WE think as opposed to how we are MADE to think. Rather than chastising modern, corporate media culture, he chooses to chastise YOU, as though it's YOUR fault you are made to think racist and sexist thoughts, not the corporate entities who plant those ideas in you. Why not focus on the problem, Mr. Stokes, rather than focusing on the symptom... perhaps maybe then we'll get somewhere!!

I don't know bruh, he seemed to be challenging his audience rather than wagging his finger at them, but maybe that's just me. I do agree that media corporations are pretty standard in terms of corrupt economic giants (aka really freaking corrupt). However, these corporations are also giving people what they will watch. The media we get is the media that will generate the most revenue.

Teddy Unsteady I think he was making his audience uncomfortable. The crap he's talking about is absurd. "White supremacy is intact?" I think this that is a huge exaggeration. "What would we have to give up to drop our facade of our power over others??" He is actually calling the audience racist. How went from talking about corporate and institutional interests promoting discrimination, which is a good start, to "you are racist." He should stick to the topic, as he was on the right track. Blaming your audience for the crimes of the minority is not going to change anything. This guy really has no idea how to talk to people.

imingzee Alright, I listened to his spiel again, and I still don't feel insulted. He uses language like "we" and "us" when addressing the audience, so he's not implying that he's above anyone in that regard. He doesn't include himself when he mentions "the great and powerful people," but these statements are not directed at the audience either. So what I get out of this video, is that Mr. Stokes here believes that the world is not a perfect place, and that discrimination is still a problem even if it has improved recently. He talks about how revelations like this are hard for people to swallow in general, and that this is taken advantage of by other people. I guess the part that can be interpreted as insult is that Mr. Stokes says that people in general do not change very much when confronted with news of discrimination or unfairness. But it shouldn't be any surprise that people are kind of dumb when it comes to learning how to change. For example, guerrilla warfare is practically brand spanking new: before that military leaders were sending droves of soldiers out of trenches to combat enemy machine gun fire (spoiler alert: the machine guns generally won). But as I said, that's just how I see it. One man's interpretation of an insult is another man's interpretation of a statement, I guess.

Teddy Unsteady I suppose. I'm just tired of hearing the same old rhetoric about sexism and racism ad nauseam. We have a world controlled by corporate interests and an international banking cabal and all people can talk about is sexism and racism in places where sexism has become reverse-sexism (women having more rights than men now) and where multiculturalism is thriving like crazy with no distinguishable signs of racism. Personally, I think this guy is mentally trapped in the 50's.

What people mostly do is create order within a sea of chaos. The structures that stem from these efforts are never perfect. It is a constant struggle to keep that order afloat. So, others are not really lying to you, it is just that for too long you failed to see that omnipresent imperfection. To add, it is indeed almost biblical. When Adam and Eve first cover their nakedness, it is to protect themselves as they are now fully aware of their weakness and vulnerability. Even that choice of the cover as a way of looking for protection is sort of a pathetic solution, showing even more so mankind's weakness in the face of dire straits. It is paradise lost. It is the human condition. So be it. Amen.

This is making more sense to me but is it to everyone of every color, religion or job position and how much a person is paid? How do we solve this matter? For once in my life I am going to have to stand up to my own self from imposing on to my own kids of the authority figure in which I never had a role model except for the 1st 10 years of my life except for Mom who raised 2 set's of kids mine. What do we do about (Sybil). Keep that in mind. So much to learn. Some nice points, really not bad thoughts overall. At the end, though, the idea is presented that powerful people gain freedom by dropping their façades. I think that only applies if they weren't achieving more freedom and power from their positions (and likely corruption or lies) and/or regret being in deceptive, powerful positions. If a person has power, wealth, and freedom to do almost anything desired (even ruining people's lives or sentencing them to death), that person has reason to keep up the illusion... first to keep their benefits and to prevent revenge for their actions (which include keeping up the illusion).

Having power over people because they believe you have power over them is not flase power. Also, you wouldn't have to disillusion your children to your standards if you didn't set up the illusion for them in the first place, which you would anyway if you tried not to because everyone has different opinions about things. To say it another way, if you were completely honest with your children, one day they'll think about how you lied to them. Everything works this way. The only golden standard of disillusionment is to refuse to be offended by dissonance.

There are so many “spiritual gurus” that have been exposed recently for abusing women and being greedy with money 😢

I'm reading Wicked, the Life and Times of the Wicked Witch and the connection between the wizard and racism is especially poignant in light of his behavior in the book, labeling Animals and animals and silencing their dissent. The wizard gets Dorothy to kill the "witch" and he gets off scott free and gets to go home with no consequences. Hopefully Glenda is a better leader in the end and isn't being controlled by someone else in the background. It's not a coincidence that Dorothy's house just happened to land on the witch of the East. It's not a coincidence that there was a bucket of water for Dorothy to use. It's not a coincidence that Toto exposes the wizard. Who does that leave? Glinda. Is Glinda controlling everything or is the lady in the literal bubble , being gently guided to follow a certain path? Sounds a lot like the way our society works.

Wow! You raise all kinds of conflicting features in the OZ chronicles that parallel real life. Not surprisingly, life we live is often lived in the moment with actions that take advantage of things at hand or the last thought in our head, leaving control to the ones who have a broader, more potent perspective or socially endorsed action plan. (Often at odds with individual motives or reputation) But the characters in Star Wars were more human (perhaps more relatable) and with better special effects making levitating rocks more believable than flying monkeys. So, the story teller’s choice to keep the OZ portion limited. Adding all the OZ details would also have distracted from his point (TMI). Clearly from the other comments, it is a topic with multiple dissonant points.

Religion is the most heavily sponsored content of all.

Most people, I think, can't comprehend the magnitude of cognitive dissonance and cognitive bias. The failure to understand and accept how the brain fails to function cognitively, will be our undoing. Good video, but most can't extrapolate the extent of this.

What a poor analogy, Luke was told that his father was dead and that Darth Vadar killed him. Which is essentially true. Only in the end was Anikin reborn and Vadar killed. Just because they were in the same body their ideology's differed greatly. It was like flipping a light switch.

erakah, I realize it year 2021, I clear my mind and enjoy who I am. Lies will always be around forever so, Love you, live you're life how you feel the best. Hope this help. Every human has his or her opinion but in your life your opinion is all that matters.

Darth Vader's revelation didn't strike me as all that remarkable or Earth shattering. I liked the Star Wars series, at least the first 3, but it was not THAT big a thing. Maybe because I was 29 years old at the time, or maybe because I never believed in superheroes, anyway. The Wizard of Oz, and the drawing back of the curtain never seemed all that deep, even though I was a little kid the first time I saw it. I liked the Beatles and Frank Zappa, but I never viewed them as God. For that matter, I never believed in God as God. Was I born defective, that I was unsurprised that everything was, well, maybe not a lie, but a whole lot less than it seemed? Was I born obtunded that I didn't feel these things?

I've been following it for over 20 years, but still, Kilauea really impresses me. Yellowstone, if you can get away from the crowds, is pretty impressive. People sometimes make me smile, or get angry, but they rarely do anything really impressive, and fantasy like superhero stories leaves me cold.

The problem with the biological explanation is it denies our ability to choose. If these thoughts or behaviors have a biological cause, what can we do to change that? Can you, for instance, change the chemistry in your brain? How? You might say, "Well, I'll ingest a drug that will change my brain chemistry." But the obvious question is, which literally nobody every asks is, where does the impetus come from in the first place which allows you to make the choice to ingest that drug? In other words, what is doing the choosing? Is it brain states themselves which choose? If that's the case, is choice even real or is it an illusion? When you ask most people if choice is possible, most will say it's axiomatic, of course it's real. But the ones who have thought about it and perhaps come from a viewpoint that matter is the cause of thought, usually have no choice (forgive the pun) but to decide (again, forgive the pun) that choice is an illusion. But those individuals don't behave as if choice were an illusion. Lectures like this one, for instance, would be pointless if choice were an illusion. If you learn everything is a lie, there's not much you can do about it if it all has a biological cause. Perhaps we need to question the foundational beliefs about reality. Is matter really the source of human consciousness? Aren't we really just coming to that conclusion because it seems to be true? Is "seems to be" really a good enough reason to make a conclusion about reality? I don't think so. If anything, we should at least question it. Maybe that's what's wrong with the world. Maybe that's why everything seems to be a lie. It's all based on the biggest lie of all.

With the little caveat that at the end he tacks on that you should believe a certain perspective that he provides, the hubris of his own cognitive dissonance is staggering.
