What To Do When You Get Diagnosed With Bipolar
Appointments, medication, therapy and what to expect!
I FORGOT TO MENTION IN THE VIDEO. Appointments now with my Psychiatrists last less than 5 minutes it is not hard and now that a lot has gone virtual I only have to go into see my doctor in person 2x a year before I had to go into the office and now 2 appointments can be via zoom or any others I need.
I also forgot to mention how hard counseling can be. Finding a therapist when you are Bipolar can be a challenge. We get turned away and sometimes dumped because of our diagnosis. Counselors do not understand our mental illness the same way psychiatrists do. At the same time Psychiatrists are not counselors and typically don't offer too much more than medication management. Your appointments are for making sure the medication you are on is working. The medication doesn't fix everything it's a tool to help us prevent further incidents. I've said before those of us with BP1 can harm others including ourselves with some of the reckless behavior we participate in (speeding, unprotected sex, etc..) There is no treatment without medication.
Thank you guys for watching for all your love and support I appreciate it so much. You all also make me feel less alone and give me the drive to keep making videos in hopes of helping to spread awareness. xoxo -Steph

BP1 here. Been watching you for a while. We have similar stories so I find watching you to be comforting in a way. Just wanted to mention that.

Thank you. ❤️
Thank you for sharing ur stories, I found you recently on youtube and its nice to have someone relatable to watch because I dont know any other people with bipolar type1. And also reading the comments is really enjoyable to know others are also struggling or coping or going through or have gone through similar things. I have to say med compliance is a biggy, even when u dont feel u need it, u still need it. I went off my anti psychotic once and it took a while but i became manic and psychotic. I was hospitalised 3 times from 2019 till 2021 once each year. It started off in 2019 with me smoking a shit lot of weed, to the point where i became manic, with psychotic features. In 2020 I cant remember what happened but i may have gone off my meds completely coz i think i felt fine and with the raise in mania i felt fantastic. And then in 2021 i was only taking my mood stabilizer and I went completely psychotic with schizophrenic features. And its not always easy for the people around us to tell when we start going manic because i would hide my symptoms like i didnt want to be found out and they think ur just going through good days until the crazy starts then its hard to control us. So I really also recommend take the medication, see a psychiatrist get a new one if ur able and unhappy. I see a psychologist too but not that often. I dont talk much, I talk more online than in person. So thank you Stef for this channel, for giving people like us a place to chat and comment

yup, and I'm still a night owl!!
Thank you so much!
Thank you! I used to take Abilify but I had too many side effects. I switched to Geodon which really helped. I'm now on seroquel which works great for me.

Seroquel made me so numb, I eventually stopped taking it and that started a whole chain of events that got me expelled

@@joeysaks6516 It really works for some people and others hate it!! I've never heard more about any other drug.
Oh and my partner says she wishes there was more information out on bipolar and like more the medical side of things like how u covered brain damage and she was wondering about when we get out of the hospital, what to expect. But shes glad theres a bit more info out now, she says it seems more people are talking about it now, but in 2019 when i had my first episode she struggled to get info

She sounds amazing! ❤️ After the hospital you can transition to outpatient for a while if you think you need it or want to be around people who have similar issues. I survive with the help of my husband because I can't even recognize hypomania when it's happening but I do listen to him so if I'm not sleeping or whatever he tells me, he doesn't harrass about my meds because he knows I take them but he gets really concerned about my sleep hygine. Having a routine really helps. And exercise can actually help grey matter in your brain grow. Caffine, cigarettes, weed, alcohol all that stuff isn't good for us I just do the best I can and the sleep is the most important of all because that is the one thing that will always send you to psychosis. I'll think more about your girlfriends question. Thank you so much for your support. It's easier once you start taking the meds but it doesn't fix everything.

We're in South Africa and we have medical aid so I dont go through our government system with out patient, i dont even think our government has a system for patients except for meds. Oh and theres a state Dr that u can see. I listen to my partner also, she also doesnt ask im taking my meds but if im a bit irritable or too excited she asks. I have a pill box for mornings, afternoons evenings and bed time and i use my phone alarm to remember to take my meds, thats really helped me. I must say Im quite bad. I sleep orait, but I smoke and I drink coffee. I dont exercise, I want to but my motivation for that is a bit low, mainly coz i dont want to execrise by myself, and my partner is in the police so she works hard everyday and doesmt still want to exercise when she gets home. But we both should, that will be my goal for this year.

@@gillianlello7325 yeah I smoked cigarettes for years and weed and coffeee omg I don't want to stop, but I do ugh!! I quit cigarettes though. So I understand it's hard but you are so good right now! Your message makes me so happy to see you saying how you take your meds now. I can relate to so much of what you went through! I've always excercised and sort of like running but a few years back I started trying yoga and it is the best. Maybe if you are up to it someday you can look on youtube for "free easy yoga class" or "free easy yoga flow." It's like going to the doctor for me but I have been super unmotivated lately to. But you can do yoga alone in your living room. Or even better get a best friend pup and then you will have to go for daily walks! ❤️😁 haha just thoughts...but you are doing so good and it's so awesome you have your partners support!
