What To Do In Retirement - Finding Your Retirement Routine

How are you going to fill your day in retirement, learn to live closely with your partner. People fear retirement because they have no place to go, as a couple it can be hard to adapt to being together everyday.
We have suggestions from establishing a routine for newly retired people, give your time some structure and purpose. Surviving retirement as a couple, finding your retirement routine requires give and take.
Keep fir not just physically but mentally too, be sure to incorporate learning new skills, ideas or pastimes. We suggest exploring food you have never had, think about a country that interests you and try eating popular cuisine from that area. We enjoy, Indian, Thai, Vietnamese, Portuguese, Chinese, amongst others.
The secret to surviving retirement as a couple is to be kind to each other, find ways of doing nice things for your partner for no other reason than being kind. Norm takes Tina tea in bed every morning, it has become a retirement routine lol. Finding Your Retirement Routine can help ease into retirement reducing fear of retirement.

My grandfather used to complain to me that when he retired he discovered that my grandmother had a terrible memory. She sent him for a walk to the grocery store every single day for an item she needed for dinner. Since my husband retired last year I have come to understand that she really wasn't forgetful at all. It is essential that you both find a way to have your alone time.

Everyday routine is walk or bicycle 15k each morning, reading, volunteer at food bank one day a week for me, husband walks with a group 3 times a week, visiting with fam and friends for happy hour, taking day trips, share the housework and cooking, and neither one of us has watched the news in years. Not having tv for years has made us happier and more independent thinkers. Mainstream media appears to be fear based and we are not interested in living that narrative. Absolutely enjoying our retirement.

You two are the best! I love how you chuckle so much - together. And Norm, keepin’ it real about the newscasts. I’m retired but my husband is not; so I’ve turned into the yard woman, chief cook & bottle washer, and performer of most of the home maintenance tasks. I draw the line at painting cause that just ends up being an unholy mess. I can see how people quickly evolve from homeowners to renters when so much time is spent on yardwork and household chores. Time that c/b spent on more enjoyable pastimes. All your advice is bang on and your suggestions on making the best of things during a pandemic when travel is restricted are so creative. Those of us who are fortunate enough to be able to retire should embrace it with an “attitude of gratitude” - many in North America and around the world will never be so lucky. Celebrate each day and make the most of it. Thanks for the terrific content - stay well and I look forward to your next video.

Great topic Norm and Tina :) Learning something new is a really good point. I bought myself a rosewood flute in Ireland back in 2011 - I'm saving it for when I retire in 2 years and I'll teach myself to play it then (lots of courses online). I played the flute and oboe when I was in school and always enjoyed that. Getting reacquainted with your spouse is a must! you can have a do-over and how fun is that? Good advice. I think staying active and keeping your brain cells active is important. I plan to walk at least 10K steps every day and I will have more time for my photography and electronics projects. There are lots of free courses on KZread and project ideas. I think its important also not to get bored and start snacking all of the time. I do one meal a day weekdays then two meals with 16 hour fast and 8 hour eating window on the weekends. I don't feel hungry because I cut right back on sugars and carbs and I no longer have pain in my knees and joints, sleep much better and maintain a healthy weight. Its important that your quality of life is good to enjoy retirement not just the financial side. Have a great weekend!

Thank you...this is an informative and personal video. I think there is a strange societal and cultural message that your significant other should meet all your wholistic needs. You can love each other with all your heart and soul, and at the same time your life journey is actually yours own alone. It’s not that something is wrong with the relationship, it’s that you still have things to figure out for yourself and as a couple...life is a journey and retirement is still full of learning. You as a couple are clearly trying to navigate this phase of life together with loving hearts... that’s all anyone can hope for..it’s about staying on the same team. ❤️

Excellent advise. Not retired yet but the "golden years" are approaching. What helped us to not be bored during our fifties was living within an hour of the GTA, beaches and other important cities. Every week we read the website of Ontario festivals and chose the ones that seemed interesting: multicultural, traditional Canadian, farm related. etc. We have been to countless festivals before COVID and that was a lot of fun and plan to continue doing that if regulations change. My big fear in retirement is to lose the ability to drive.

My husband and I enjoy your videos so much. We live is Mississauga and have a cabin near Bancroft. Gary is 62 and plans to retire early 2022. I am 56 years old and work from home as an artist, art teacher, and recently I rejoined the travel industry as a work from home travel agent. I plan to spend the next few months re-familiarizing myself with traveling during covid. Our 27-year old daughter died in January from complications due to her heart transplant. Our 21-year old son lives with us and has mild autism that requires our tutelage. I don't plan to retire fully for several years. Instead I want to continue my digital nomad work as we travel in the winter and raise bees and chickens at our cottage in the summers. Thank you for your excellent videos. We look forward to them! Thanks for such an outstanding program today. You presented such wonderful tips to help anyone who is retired to enjoy retirement fully. Having "me time" is so important for maintaining a healthy relationship for everyone, not just retired couples. Too much togetherness can become stifling and certainly is not healthy. One thing that perked up my life was to have an " international cuisine night". It can be once a month or however often you feel like it. Shop, prepare and cook some new meal from another culture. You will learn something new and you can even go so far as to choose a film to enjoy from the country whose food you are cooking. If you live near a large city you can save money having lunch at an upscale restaurant ( when they open again). Their luncheon menus are usually much less expensive than their dinner menus as the portion sizes are smaller ( a good thing 🤣). Take care and have a pleasant weekend. 🤗❤🙏🌎

Whether it be joining a gym, learning another language, or new dance steps, the important thing is to get started. We left the UK in 1992 and have been back visiting family regularly ever since. Having said that we both come from small families so we don't have any family left in the UK they have all passed. We would not move back to the UK, home is here in Canada with our grown up children and their families. There is no substitute for family and if you are alone where you are now and have family left in the UK, then it makes sense. We have made friends here and it adds so much to our standard of life, in the UK we wouldn't really know anyone. Thanks so much for finding us, we hope you enjoy our videos.
