I really felt relaxed as soon as I got there. I was coming pretty much straight from India though with only one day just outside Bangkok to catch a connecting flight so my sense of reality was probably pretty warped at the time. The food is something else though. Such an amazing country.

I've been to Hanoi 5 times over the last 2 years and this is the most interesting and authentic guide I've seen. Just need a few more meals in the day to get through all your recommendations. Awesome video. Thanks!

EGG COFFEE, KEBAB BANH MI AND BUN CHA - YES! Was there just this February and I miss it already. I spent about 48 hours in the city but this video is still a revelation, in so many ways. Hanoi was my first ever trip outside the PH (alone too!) and I think it was a good call, since Hanoi did feel a little closer to home but also very different from Manila. Food was the highlight of my trip - so cheap, yet SO GOOD and there was also being mistaken several times for a local. Great video as always!

bodot ski PHP2,000 or 40 USD a day is a workable budget for almost anywhere in SE Asia. That would cover your accommodation, commute and food. It should be a good amount for Hanoi too. Everything in the city is affordable!

Hi Erwan, bringing you greetings from Canada. I had watched your Ho Chi Minh Vlog and this one on Hanoi. I enjoyed watching them because you have such a clear voice, right volume and very detailed and most of all very informative. I like it that you had included the different snails which I have been longing for. Seeing some of them reminded me of my childhood and of my father who can cooked a mean escargot Chinese style with soy sauce and vinegar.

great episode!! As someone who was born and raised in Hanoi and am now studying overseas, this episode brought me back home big time. ps. the fried doughnut is technically 'youtiao' in Chinese and Hong Kong's cuisines. Instead of dipping it in soy milk and porridge, we dip it in pho and porridge

Just getting the feel for Viet Nam, cities like Da Lat and Hanoi don't seem so touristy as some of the well-traveled and publicized spots and still hold on to the culture of Viet Nam. I never would have thought Hanoi would be a place of interest and then people (like you) are saying it's one of their favorite places. I will definitely have to do a see and tell. Thanks

it's my pleasure if the latter information is useful for u . First, almost kind of '' pho'' and ''bun'' cost u about $2-2.5, banh mi cost only $1-1.5, no dish is more expensive than $2.5, it's usually more expensive in Old Quater areas. Second, u can have egg coffee with $1.5-2, i highly recomment u try it at Giang coffee, if u r a fan of coffee, there r a lot of other must-try Vietnamese coffees, such as milk coffee, bac siu (in Vietnamese,it's bạc sỉu).Finaly, it is not bad, but u shoud be careful when travelling by bus. Btw, welcome to Vietnam !!!

What i like about Vietnam is the place gives you a choice. The main streets of tourist hubs are not on local rate, you can survive in a cheap budget. Certainly having the unique, genuine experience. Contrary to other neighborhood countries, when its a tourist area, you have no choice but spend and the tourist district is not a first hand experience of the culture unless maybe when you spend some time more

i know his face but forget his name lol , i think he a artis , the only wrong thing yusef got wrong in this video is about young people pushing the govt to privatize the company it actually the govt that pushing it cause they wanted to join TTP ( which if you wanted to join you have to privatize alot of the state company ) there is good and bad about privatizing state company , bad is foreign company buying up the stock and take control big company in vietnam , aka like some thai company try to buy vietnam beer/sodar company ( normal foreign company only can buy around 30-40% maax ) but this thai company cheat by creating a ghost company head by some dumb fuck vietnamese lady ( that they used her name only so it seem like vietnamese company ) to buy up other 20% so they can take control of the company ( cause govt only keep like 35-40% ) i think we need better laws befor privatizing big state company cause foreign company can used the loop holes and take those company and all the money will go foward foreigner and not to vietnamese

Great vid. Awesome footage, and I love the quick cuts. Your narration is really nice too. It brings back lots of memories for me. I spent 2 months in Vietnam back in 2009 (before I started making travel videos) and thoroughly loved it, although I didn't get to spend much time in Hanoi. I might have to go back again soon, this time armed with a camera.

I don't know why but your video remind me of the film "l'auberge espagnole"

The fried donut is chinese influenced. It is called youtiao and a typical breakfast will be fried bread sticks dipped in fresh soy milk. In vietnamese it's called Banh Quay. I love having it with congee. Our Banh Mi baguette however is french influenced.

Great job on the overnight in Hanoi Erwan! You are always on top of the latest places to eat so when i go back to Asia I know where to check out next. Thank you! When you mentioned the deep fried donuts in this video, the origin behind them is really from China, which is called, Youtiao. It is normally accompanied with congee (rice porridge) for breakfast in Chinese culture. This deep fried donut has spread throughout Asia and you can find it in almost any Asian country now. In the Philippines it is called, Bicho. Or in the Visayan region, they call it "sia-koy," usually twined like a rope. Reference to: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Youtiao

Received notification yesterday on my mobile, wanted to watch it immediately. But I refused myself the pleasure as I would only want to enjoy this with good speakers and a big HD screen. I totally agree on Hanoi and Saigon being very different from each other. the same elements are there, but man - what a world of difference 1160 kilometers make. And you described it perfectly. @@skwong2005 They only eat like this in Hanoi and not anywhere else. Story goes in the war time meat was scarce, they sold pho without any beef or chicken, only the noodle, so this donut was introduce to "fill the stomach"

yes. The bread and white noodle are actually Chinese influenced, and I heard the beef is French. Combined with Vietnamese vegetables, soup and seasonings we have Phở.

who are these uneducated people? banh mi is inspired by the French baguette (pate is one of the most famous ingredients in banh mi and it's French you idiots) Pho is influenced by China what the fuck!!! The flavor is ENTIRELY DIFFERENT COZ THE INGREDIENTS IS FUCKING DIFFERENT FROM NOODLES IN CHINA! the only thing common between Pho and Chinese noodles is they are both flour based with soup same can be said for ramen/beehoon/mee in other asian country

vesper malfoy Sorry, but Pho is really both influenced by the Chinese, French and it native region. The noodles and spices are imported from China (Guangdong and Yunnan, which is located in the Southwestern). Eventhough Hong Kong is a Special Administrative region in CHINA, it is run by the Chef Executive, currently is Leung Chun-ying (so it almost like an independent country). Cantonese (Yeu) are just one of the five main dialects in China, though, most people their would just consider themselves Hong Kong citizens, in real life they would still be considered Chinese. The noodles and spices are imported from China and the French popularized the eating of red meat. I'm Vietnamese, Chinese and French American so I should know something about the history. And next times, instead, of telling others that they're uneducated, check your understanding of history. Maybe others just have different beliefs and understanding on historical events, and I respect that. P/s: Watch your profanity.

Yeah thats the problem with Vietnamese. Comprehension depends on the stress of each word. If you mispronounced it they wont understand it...Of course, there is no daddy's meat...Vietnamese should also start learning how to comprehend using situations or sound like...

***** The foreigner is the one who is speaking vietnamese so the receiver of the message should be the one to take the contextual meaning without the right tonality sadly vietnamese are just tonal based without considering the context

You should go to Australia and try the Vietnamese food here in Sydney. i reckon it's even better than the food in vietnam lol. Like I'm a Vietnamese but I'm even surprised when i first tried the food here :p We have a big Vietnamese community in australia :D

everyone has different opinion mate. When I went to Hanoi I didn't enjoy the food as much as I expected. Even the taste of Pho in Saigon are very different to the one in Hanoi. Most of Vietnamese food in Australia are southern flavor so if you come from northern Vietnam then of course you might have a different opinion

lucas Nguyen at this point i agreed with u. I went to Hanoi in 2014, i tried "bun cha" in famous restaurant, it wasnt taste good as i thought. But the Trang Tien ice-cream was nice and foods in Sapa were good too. According to what u said above, viet's food in Aus is better than Viet's food in north of viet instead of vietnam. Am I right?

I have been in Texas USA for 12 years. In terms of variety of foods and food safety, no doubt it is way better here where we have 1 mil+ from all provinces and regions in Vietnam. Central and Southern foods seem to keep their originality simply because most Vietnamese immigrants come from those areas. Northern foods, however, are not as authentic as what we have back in Vietnam (pho Hanoi, bun rieu mien Bac, bun oc, banh cuon Thanh Tri, pate, banh my...). But again, it depends largely on what kind of taste you got introduced to and hooked with at first. That would set your opinion and preference when it comes to Vietnamese foods.

Luke Aloha agreed. I think because SYDNEY is so multicultural and made up of people from al backgrounds who make authentic food (and not just tailored for a western consumer taste palate) the food in Sydney is phenomenal.

Certainly one of the best travel seriers I´ve spotted on KZread, like your video style keep it up man! I have a VN girlfriend (from Saigon) and we watched together of this ep. and another one with Saigon. Totally enjoyed my previous visit in Saigon and would like to visit Hanoi someday too.
