Thank you so much for this! I’ll have a 10-hour layover in Frankfurt in Aug 24 and this is exactly what I would like to do, your video has been most helpful. I’ll really appreciate your comments to these questions: 1) Do you need to go through German customs to show your passport (I am a US citizen) to get admitted into Germany? How do you pay for the train fare, Euros, US dollars, credit card? Same for food in town? Can you get by with English only? Back at the airport how long you think it takes to get through security -easy, moderate, super busy? Thank you so much in advance. Super excited, this will be my first time ever setting foot in Europe!

Hi! I’m so glad you found this helpful. I hope you have a wonderful trip. You’ll love Europe I’m sure 😊 1. If Frankfurt is your first stop in the EU then yes you will need to through customs and immigration and show your passport. 2. We prefer to use a credit card with no foreign transaction fees, but you should be able to pay with euro cash too. No US dollars though. For both fares and food. 3. We had no problems speaking English but worst case you can always just point at the food you want and signal how many tickets with your fingers. 4. For security it really depends on the time of day and time of year. I would give yourself two hours but check security conditions the day of as well in case it’s extra busy. If this is your last stop before leaving Europe remember you need to go through immigration and customs again too. When we visited in October it was easy though. Have a wonderful trip! Really cool! Was your layover like 6-8 hours? Did you go straight from the cathedral to the airport? Sometimes it's hard to gauge if you have enough time to get in and out of the airport to the city. Storing your luggage at the airport is a really good tip!

Our layover was 6 hours and we spent a little around 2 and a half hours in the city center. We finished at the cathedral but it’s right next to the metro stop so you could start there or at Römerberg.

That depends on what country you are from. If you’re from the US you do not need a visa. An e-visa called ETIAS will be required in the future but not until 2025.

Thank you! That helps me motivate me to keep creating 😊 Oooh 4 hours is tough. You wouldn’t have much time in Römerberg probably an hourish. I think it depends on a few things like how long it takes you to get through immigration and customs (if applicable), what current security lines are like (last year Europe had some very intense security lines that were hours long), do you have to recheck bags, how far is your gate from luggage storage and public transportation, etc. In theory public transportation takes 30 mins so if it takes you 30 minutes to get to the train from the plane and then 30 minutes to get to Römerberg you have an hour in Römerberg and then 30 minutes back to the airport to be there 1.5 hours before your flight with a little wiggle room for any delays. In the end it depends on if it’s worth it to you for an hour and conditions at the airport on the day of your flights.

When you came into frankfurt did you have to come through the train station that is known for being sketchy with drug and the red light district trying to avoid it. Thanks

We arrived in T2 so we stored our luggage in T2 but since our flight on Lufthansa to Sardinia left from T1 we should have stored it in T1 since that’s where the train leaves from too. You’ll want to store your luggage in the terminal your next flight leaves from so you aren’t rushing to get your luggage and get to you gate for your flight.

Are you from the USA? Did you need to apply for a VISA to go out and explore on your layover? How do you do that?

Hi! I do live in the US. As a US citizen you do not need a visa to visit any countries in the European Union including Germany, but starting sometime in 2024 (no official date yet) visitors from the US will need an online approval called ETIAS. There is still some time before that comes into affect next year.
