In today’s video, we’ll discuss the popular British retailer Charles Tyrwhitt -- their history and most importantly, what to buy and what to avoid when shopping with them.
This video is the third in our “What To Buy From..” series. We’ve previously covered Ralph Lauren and Brooks Brothers.
Today, we turn our attention from American Brands to one from across the pond, Charles Tyrwhitt. On the topic of pronunciation, the brand says that the last name rhymes with the word “spirit.” If you’d like to see our playlist of pronunciation videos, you can find it on our channel.

I worked for Charles Tyrwhitt for a year (leaving only one month ago) in their Stratford store, and mostly second this review; it's an awesome company with awesome people. Just eyeballing, I would recommend the Super Slim Fit for you Preston! The only caveat is that the cuffs are shorter than the other fits, have one button instead of two, and I believe the newer models have a slightly shorter collar depth. I would also definitely recommend their new ‘Tyrwhitt Pique Polo’ range for a great fit, comfortable fabric, and a collar that actually looks good - they produce the best polos I have ever worn. However, I disagree with the negative feedback on the trousers - last year, they had a massive overhaul, introducing many new ranges and cuts. I would say that their ‘dressed 24/7’ casual chinos are superb in terms of comfort, fit, and quality, and I constantly receive complements on them. They might not work for everyone, though. I could talk about their stuff all day, but thank-you for brining this excellent brand to more people’s attention. Also, many congratulations on the marriage!

Good insight, thanks. Just had a look at their website (from Australia). Could not find the 24/7 chinos. Only ultimate, non-iron and soft-washed. Any ideas?

@@chrish2879 Hi Chris! They do have a problem with the naming of their product ranges - they are sometimes inconsistent, unhelpful, and non-advertised. In this case, ‘Dressed 24/7’ and the ‘Ultimate Chinos’ are the same; they seem to flip flop between the two names. In a ‘trouser’ training session that we had, they told us to distinguish between the different trouser ranges mainly by the taper. I like the Ultimate Chinos the best because they are the most tapered, and don’t have a crease down the front, making them more versatile. Their ‘Non-Iron Chinos’ (also known as ‘Dressed to the Nines’) are less tapered in the leg, and have a permanent crease. Though I also really like these, I feel I can only really wear them with sports coats. In this range, they have 'textured' versions that are made of a slightly different material, which I find extremely comfortable. I have no experience with the soft-washed chinos, so can unfortunately not comment.

@@heroandvillainstyle Wow, thanks very much for your reply! Very helpful. My only experience of ordering shirts online has been with TM Lewin, who I used happily for years. When I heard about CT, I must admit that I thought they were just a TML-wannabe. This video, your detailed info and a thorough look through their website have convinced me otherwise. I'll definitely give them a go. Thanks again!

I have three pairs of the soft-washed chinos in 100% cotton. They are superb in regards of strength. I ride my bicycle 8 km to and from work every day in them, and I have been doing so for a year now. They are not showing any sign of wear or tear in the crotch area.

As a Londoner, I have visited their flagship store many times. Long opening times and great staff make it a good experience. I have a suit, black tie ensemble, and ~10 dress shirts from them. The value for money is good, especially when you buy shirts in bulk for a discount. Keep up the good work!

Congrats on the wedding! Before i discovered Charles Tyrwhitt in 2015 I had given up hope of ever finding a good dress shirt. I had been buying off the peg shirts from JC Penney and Macy’s but I knew I needed to up my game. I tried Brooks Brothers but the shirts I could find with an 18 inch collar were big all round and I felt like I was wearing a sail. Same with JosA Bank. I found CT online somehow and discovered they could do a Slim Fit shirt with an 18 collar. I couldn’t believe it but I clicked Buy and have never looked back. It fit PERFECTLY! I have a dozen shirts by them now plus pocket squares, cuff links, ties, and sweaters. I’ve returned a couple things without incident. Their customer support is stellar. I once had a really specific question about whether you button both buttons on their sweater blazer (since on a real blazer you’d only ever button the top one) and the customer service actually checked with the designer of the sweater and got back to me the next day (you button both when it’s a sweater blazer). Couldn’t believe how amazing they were. Their stuff does run large (I’m heavier and I still wear a Slim Fit) but it’s all tailored to look good. No “sails” at Charles Tyrwhitt. I don’t care for their trousers because, as Preston said, the rise isn’t high enough, but everything else I’ve bought is great. All in all, I love CT. The biggest bummer about not being on the office due to Covid is that I don’t have the opportunity to wear all my CT shirts!

Funny thing is, I’m watching this in a Tyrwhitt suit. To be honest I would only partially recommend them for suits, the seat of my trousers has worn a patch through, this is from wearing it 2 days a week for a few months....not terribly impressive but my other suit is still immaculate so perhaps I just drew the long straw on that one. I would concur that the fits are a bit off, I will need to get mine adjusted in the future. If you could do another one of these videos for T.M Lewin that would be brilliant!

  • @barnabyg6808

@@kyle_vr I'd say it depends what you want. With that budget there's a lot of online custom companies like hockerty or pickashirt etc to go with though how good they are I really couldn't say. There will definitely be tailors in the UK who do a suit for a similar price- I know a friend who got a 2 piece suit made for £650. You could try Tyrwhitt custom, I know they certainly used to do custom but not bespoke suits around that price point. I personally would either find a place with nice fabrics, be that from somewhere Tywhitt/ hawes and curtis and then take that suit to an alterations tailor or find a vintage suit online and take that to an alterations tailor. Victory vintage has some nice selections quite often if you are more inclined to an online shop for vintage suits, though ebay and depop can also be surprisingly good

The first CT shirt I bought, some ten years ago, was a flanel one, in a Tattersall check, a pattern you hardly ever find in The Netherlands, where I live. I love that check and it provides that specifically British 'out-in-the-country' but still gentlemanly look when combined with fabrics like tweeds and ribcords, both of which I am really fond of wearing. (In The Netherlands 'out in the country' basically starts around the corner of almost any city street, with only a few exceptions, like the old center of Amsterdam and the new center of Rotterdam.) Over the years I purchased some more of those flanels in Tattersall and also a few dress shirts, although for smooth business camisas I prefer -and probably are spoiled by- the Napolitan Luigi Borrelli shirts, with their softer collars and the slight puffing of the sleave heads. But for the checked flanels Tyrwitht has become my trusted go-to purveyor. However -the however you probably knew would come- one thing I noticed from the first to the latest purchase I made at CT: the buttons drop off like there's no tomorrow, as if they were fixex with some cobweb! Sometimes even a couple of them, straght away, the very first time I fasten them. Just by touching them in the slightest way the thread unravels, right before your eyes. That can be no coincidence, for it happened every time and with any shirt. I can't imagine it's just my bad luck: there must be something awry with the type of sewing machines, or the method used, and I'm sure others must have had the same experience. Fortunately, I have become quite handy with needle and threat over the years since I'm wearing clothing I buy 'or the rest of my life' - i.e. quality classic/traditional- and I don't dislike that kind of work, but my sweet revenge consists of the fact that I put the buttons back on by using the 'zampa di gallina', -crow's feet, or litterally 'chicken claw' stitch, the one used by finest shirtmakers in Napoli... I do like Tyrwhitt's shirts a lot, but I felt I should mention this flaw, of which I suspect it is a atructural and avoidable one. Some buyers might even get propperly irritated and skip CT for that reason, which would be a loss for all parties involved.

I’ve also had only positive experiences with CT shirts. Have a few that are 12 years old now, and I use them often. In the Classic fit, there’s a lot of material there! I would almost never consider a “Slim” fit for me, but from them, I might make an exception the next time. Going to invest in a little tailoring to take in some of the billow, but for spending $34 for the shirts, I’m rather pleased with all other aspects. Congratulations, Preston! this is the most accurate review about Tyrwhitt.. Other youtubers love to bash on CT, simply because they don't pay them money for "advertising". Which 100% disagree. As stated in this channel. some of their items are really great quality for the price.

Superb quality and service in-store - I am an athletic fit and found it impossible to find shirts that actually fit rather than looking boxy. The range of products, patterns and materials are fantastic for their price. Quality is high and durable

Nice review of Charles Tyrwhitt. I also have a growing pile of brass collar stays. Currently, I have at least two dozen dress shirts, about a dozen neckties, and a navy peacoat. I'm a CT fan for life! 🇺🇲👔🇬🇧

Congratulations on the wedding! The assessment of what to buy and not to buy from Tyrwhitt pretty much matches my experience. Trousers definitely not. I've had mixed experience with suits - sizing was all over the place. Shirts were good but ultimately not long enough in the back for me.

Great video! I am from England and I have a few Charles Tyrwhitt formal shirts. I agree that the quality and cost per wear is excellent although I’ve mainly bought their shirts from eBay! You can often find their shirts on eBay UK and the ones I have bought have been in excellent condition. Preston, I am the same build as you and I agree ref the fit: I find extra slim fits me perfectly and is much like a standard slim fit in other brands so you should go for it as I reckon it would fit you. Interestingly, I have also had the same issue with fit with TM Lewin shirts (another Jermyn Street brand you should consider reviewing), I have a slim fit pink micro check shirt in slim and I would say it’s closer to a regular fit. Fortunately iI is a lovely shirt and the fit is not so bad as to look like a tent so I’ve kept it! TML have a very similar set up to CT with a wide variety and many fit types etc. TML is a slightly cheaper price point but not by much, although that matters if you’re tighter than two coats of paint, like me! Anyway, I have bought shirts and pocket squares from them and found them to be excellent quality for the price. I haven’t explored the rest of the product range from either brand as yet. Congratulations on your nuptials by the way!

I notice Sunspel is on that jermyn street list too. I have a black turtleneck that I bought from them probably well over a decade ago now and it is excellent quality. The garment still holds up incredibly well although it is not something I wear frequently so that may also be a factor.

Great video as always. While I love the CT shirt fit options, quality, and prices (when on sale), you definitely need to size down from your usual measurements, particularly the neck size (my usual is 15.5, but had to move down to 15). Also, why are their cuff openings so much larger than other shirts? I've tried both their barrel and French cuff options and the wrist sizes are enormous, enough to where I had to resew the barrel cuff buttons and return the French cuff shirts, which is a shame because I love cufflinks. Finally, congrats on your wedding, Preston!

I am a long-standing CT customer, and I think you have got it spot on here. I would not choose their suits and probably steer clear of most of the polos. But I have a number of excellent CT pieces: silk-blend shirts; knitwear (especially the knitted blazer); knitted polos; and chinos from their best range. Wearing today a white CT shirt with Fleur de Lys cufflinks from the same house. They've overtaken Lewin, who have really regressed in my opinion. I do find it annoying that both Tyrwhitt and Lewin have tiny fonts on the latest versions of their web sites. This just looks cheap. Nothing wrong with CT customer service though.

I bought brown Oxford shoes on sale(leather sole), to be honest it was very painful to walk them in. (I still have a wound on my foot) But right now, these schoes are just wonderful. When a train was cancelled I took the opportunity for a short hiking trip. (about 10km/6,2miles) Mostly I was walking through a forest, hill up, hill down. I was very surprised how well I got along, especially because most of the gras was a little wet. Also it was quite fun to observe the reaction of other people, when you meet in a dark forest, dressed completly up. 10/10 would do it again.

I have always had 10 CT shirts in my wardrobe. My absolute go to brand for shirts in their multibuy options. Their cardigans are a bit miss for me in terms of my personal body sizing. But their jumpers are great for me! PS : always search the internet for coupons. There is often a discount on TOP of their multibuy! Amazing value

I threw all my macy's, retail stores shirts in the garbage and, now I have like 15 ct shirt. Just bought a suit from the recently since I like the shirts so much going to see how it turns out :) I love being able to choose the cuff, collar sizes. Also the slim fit option's are great as well! Often they have great deals to so I can't resist getting a set of 3 shirts every now and then which is how I got my collection built up over time. Great customer service as well, had made a order a day before a sell started and they weren't able to change the price of the order since it already processed instead they gave me a gift credit to the savings of sale coupon so I was able to get a pair of pants. Coming from being a retail shopper for dress shirts, I have to say CT is way better than any common retailers that I have shopped at. Dunno how CT would compare to other brands on it's level however because I just loved CT shirts so much I don't really shop else where. I don't feel like I will as well cause I don't care about labels/brands. Other top brands probably will be similar quality to CT most likely just diff. brand label.

A number of years ago just on a whim I purchased a pair of generic t-shirts from Charles Tyrwhitt and was pleasantly surprised with the quality and heavy weight of the t-shirts and still wear them both regularly. It's not an item that Tyrwhitt is known for, but the quality and fit was really exceptional, though I don't know if they're still made or if they're assembled in the same facility, etc..
