What To Avoid When Taking Metformin | Drug Interactions | Pharmacology
Metformin is a medication used to reduce or lower blood glucose levels. Metformin is used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and polycystic ovary syndrome, among other conditions. Unfortunately, metformin can cause a variety of mild and severe side effects, including lactic acidosis. Certain foods, beverages and other medications can increase the risk of side effects from metformin.

I year after I wrote how much Metformins helped me: Those Metformins made me feel better at first. Then I got real sick. Nausea etc., That.s after my doctors had told me "it.s a common misconception that Metformin makes some folks sick". Shortly after he told me this, his office called; screaming for me to get off right away, as it was ruining my kidneys. They then switched me to Januvia, which makes me feel just as strong as the Metformin. An RN in my building is on dialysis 3 times per week because of taking Metformin.

This was very informative. I retired in 2018 after 53 yrs working as a RN. I am 78 yrs old and have taken Metformin since 2014. No other meds except for B12 3xwk. Definitely not 10 meds. Sadly, I have seen many elderly patients with too many medicines causing multiple problems. Polypharmacy is a major problem in the elderly in this country. This video is an important tool in making caregivers and patients aware of interactions.

@@Mariahlb Many western countries like Australia, The US & England don’t bother about actually discussing side effects. When a new medication is given, the pharmacy may ask you if you want a printed information guide, but that’s about it. I have NEVER had a doctor voluntarily give details of side-effects, the last one told me that “everything in life is a risk”, after I said that the potential risks seemed unreasonable. That didn’t help, and it certainly wasn’t in context of the actual discussion. I felt dismissed, so I’m getting another opinion. I’m sure they would talk to you about it, but it’s up to you to ask for an in-depth conversation. I’m only mentioning these countries as I’ve lived in all of them for long enough to get dr’s scripts. It’s the doctor’s job to weigh up the risk/benefit ratio, but there’s so much polypharmacy going on, different specialists adding different potentially interacting drugs, it’s no wonder it’s a huge cause of death, although it doesn’t seem to be acknowledged or recorded that way, exactly. You need to double & triple check everything your doctors are doing. I have had a couple of hair raising experiences..and know of others also..by God’s grace I was saved from medical “mistakes”. Everyone is human, doctors aren’t infallible, so we have to take responsibility for our own health. You are very fortunate with the medical system in Switzerland.

Over long term use and higher Metformin doses 2G daily (4x 500mg tablets daily), it actually does - You may not notice intially as it increases the volume of Metform to remain in the blood, by causing it to adhere to certain cell instead of your body clearing it out naturally. Other medications such as Heart mediciations and some antdepressants its more risky

What you have to watch is some natural suppliments (Herbal) like Berberine & Inositol. Whilst these are proven to have the same impact as Metformin on Blood Glucose and do assist in regulation of levels... NEVER take them at the same time of the day as Metformin, as you could actually hypo as it can drop your BG to unsafe levels quickly as both compounds work towards the same goal at the same time @@lisbethsalander1723

….and has anyone told you that metformin gives you the runs…in my case serve and debilitating and badly effecting my life. For over 18 months I suffered and not one doctor pointed it out that it could be the Metformin. This included consultants.😳 I persuaded my diabetic nurse to stop the metformin and the problem stopped over night …100% improved!

It’s one of the most common side effects. However, there is a slow release version Metformin SR, which is much better tolerated by most people.

Yes a few years back I had to stop it immediately because I was working at the time and I could barely function because of that side of effect. My doctor wasn't pleased but I was already taking one diabetes medicine anyway. That very same doctor never told me I had stage 3 kidney disease. I found out by reading her doctors note in my electronic medical records. I'm glad I stopped it because it may have slowed down the progression of the disease. I'm at stage 4 now due to making dietary changes. Sometimes you have to listen to you body and become your own advocate. I also switched doctors shortly after that.

I have been taking metformin since I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes 34 years ago and it was called, Glucophage, It works, my A1C stays around 5.8 and I have noticed no side effects. I have frequent checkups and have had no problem with liver or kidney damage. I do take a B-12 supplement because I read that Metformin could reduce my B-12 level. No side effects from Metformin for me and I believe is it at least partly responsible for my being 78, a type 2 diabetic and very healthy.......

There are many Metformin generics approved by the FDA, and they are not all the same. After having frightful GI symptoms from one of the generics made in India (and later recalled by the FDA), I stumbled across the generic Metformin ER made by Oceanside, which has no obvious side effects.

@@robertstancliffsr9575 Your pharmacist can tell you what generics you've taken. I should have mentioned that I dumped my hospital and chain pharmacies in favor of a small, independent pharmacy, which offered to let me try several different generics for a week each. 🏆 (Unlike the big, corporate operations, they have not once tried to tell me al generics are the same as brand name.)

Metformin made me food sensitive, and I couldn't keep any food down and had major issues in the bowel department. I couldn't keep going on it, in that regard. So have been switched over by my caretakers..and am far better. I use a quik-pen system right now.
