When I was a probation officer 20 years ago, I realized that once you were in the system it was nearly impossible for someone struggling to comply with all the conditions placed on them. I was one of the only PO's to actually empathize and tried to help those who were truly trying. Sadly most of the PO's are as you described and ultimately, I quit after 4 years, because I couldn't treat people with indignity, especially victimless crimes.

The conditions placed on them are basically the way most people live on a daily basis. Don't break the law, don't use illegal drugs, don't drink excessively, work a job and support your family. Glad you left the field. Don't need people like you trusted with public safety.

@@us-bw6hg you are absolutely 100 percent without a doubt totally incorrect. I was on probation for almost 2 years. You are ordered to do counseling, community service, called for random drug tests even though i wasn't a drug offender. I could keep going besides the fact all these things must be done through them at their ridiculous prices. All that while holding down a full time job. It was very stressful and very expensive. Fortunately I successfully made it through but if i couldn't financially afford it I would have been sent to jail. Many people cannot afford to successfully complete probation because of the extreme financial hardship. The probation system is designed for failure.

Judge advised my PO he will be releasing me daily breath tests and this infuriates my PO Officer. She comes up to me and tells me that despite what the judge says I will now do daily pbts with her. I go before the judge. He says I will not need to doing any more breath tests. I clarify with him and tell him what my PO Officer said. He gets downright mad and court orders that I do not do PBTS with the department of probation. That's what happens when a PO Officer tries to fight a judge lol. Best day of my life.

I worked probation, both adult and juvenile, doing most of my time in juvenile. Reason I left was I couldn't leave it at the office when it came to kids. That affected me, and in turn, I knew it would affect my own family. I wanted to adopt half of them (ended up taking in and raising 2 kids years later), and would be upset worried about them every day. Where I got very angry was when we had an appointment for a juvenile, and the parent would be very late because they were upstairs with their own PO, not doing the right things, then they would come & aggressively yell at their child, telling us they had no idea why their kid was doing bad, as if they weren't setting the example & not parenting. For me, #1 thing was someone's intention & effort for their children.

This story hit home, I remember my release date and how scared I was of the "Free World". I was shaking walking through the main entrance. Went through 5 P.O.s during my parole, which you can imagine how wonderful that must have been. My last one was brutal, showing up at my job and my house at 3 am when I worked at 5 am for piss tests and curfew checks. I hated the fact that he would broadcast my past to everyone around when he showed up and make me feel like I'm still a convict. And yes all they wanted was cash. No help for you at all, just keep the revolving door swinging. Keep up the amazing work brother. Mad love to you and your family. Your a real hero for guys like us.

What an amazing man you are sir. The knowledge and just real talk that you share is absolutely priceless. The system is horribly broken no doubt. My father was a Probation officer for many years. He left the field out of frustration. 100 percent the system wants people to fail. He wanted his clients to excel in life and not fail. He was often scolded and told he was to close to his clients. He was accused of making it to easy for his clients and that he should bring the hammer down more. My pop always saw the good in people. He initiated several fresh start programs. He worked with men on the row. People with zero hope of getting out but he wanted to help them. People in prison are human beings. They are not society's trash. They are people who made choices that led them where they are. He believed everyone had change in them. They just needed guidance. Thank you Larry for keeping it 100

This one really hit home with me because I experienced very similar experiences with my parole/probation time and it was spot on to what I went through. I came to the exact same conclusions as you. The system does not want to let go of you, it doesn’t want you to succeed and they want to break you for for good. My experiences still haunt me today even though it has been nearly 18 years since I have gained unconditional release. This video has helped me to see that no matter how hard the system tried to break me down I beat them by doing the next right thing every day, minute by minute, hour by hour. Thank you Mr. Larry for helping me tonight.

I couldn't join the Navy for 2 years due to a fire without a permit charge that i got while on a friends land with permission to make the fire. The fire was no bigger in diameter than a normal size pizza pan you put in your oven at your home. I had to take over 10 drug tests while going to court over this bullshit. If the general public knew how much bullshit existed within the "justice" system, this entire country would be on fire. Luckily I had a Grandfather that loved me and could help me out with a lawyer and even then he ended up having to out and out ask the lawyer what it would take to make this all end so his grandson could actually get the fuck out of TN and join the Navy. The lawyer said 3,000 dollars. (this was after 2 years of court appearances and going to arson classes and community service and thousands of dollars.) I was never even convicted of a crime and had to pay an enormous amount of money, take classes, and drug tests for something that I should have never been fucked with over. Thats why I will be applying to law school next year and will use every fiber of my being to combat this bullshit system of extortion. Love what you do.

Damn. Everything you described about probation is exactly what I'm dealing with pre-sentence/pre-trial. The fact that they are treating someone who is legally 100% innocent the same as someone who has been convicted shows that the system is getting worse, not better.

I have never been convicted of a serious crime, and I often thank God for that. I have heard about the probation system before. You basically have very few if any rights while on probation. It really sounds terrible. I am very glad that you got free of that too, Mr, Lawton! You are a good guy and you are doing good things. Thanks for shareing your knowledge and experiances. I hope your efforts to push for reforms of this rotten system are productive. Keep on pushing straight ahead! And good luck and good health! Enjoy those trips to the refridgerator late at night too! I am only one of many of your fans.

I HAD THE WORST PROBATION OFFICER EVER!!! It started off ok until he starts some bullshit, he didn't show up to half the meetings and had me sit there for hours, said I didn't pay when I did, and when he sent me a letter saying I can leave and I no longer have probation he had the audacity to say why we haven't met that month! One day I went and heard my officer say "I'm gonna make him sit there for a while and see what happens" which really made me mad. edit: when my officer never showed up for the meetings I had a nice older officer, really nice and good do my meetings, I liked him more, he asked questions redundantly but he was a way better officer

Thing with probation they dont tell you is that you have to meet them once a week or every few weeks when they say. Which means you miss work which will get you fired eventually. Unless your boss is cool. Then when you get fired they see you as unemployed then they violate you.

Many years ago I was in the Pre Trial Diversion program for first time offenders. We had to do a bunch of community service and go to these monthly meetings. Well it turns out there was no meeting, you would just show up, sign in and pay your dues and leave. It was at this point I realized the system only cared about money.

Love the channel Larry, I have yet to see anything on here that is not totally authentic. When you talk about your experiences on probation it really brings back memories. I was released to a HH from USP Florence just a few days before your release in 2007. My PO happened to be a fair and level-headed guy who actually tried to help me in any way he could, but from what I saw that almost never happened. I know a guy who went back for a year because his car broke down on the way to a UA and he missed it, even though he had pictures and called his PO right away. I saw things like that happen way more often than PO's actually using common sense or showing any kind of empathy.

Back in 2005 I was placed on felony probation in Flagler County, Florida for 5 years with the first 2 years house arrest. I swear on this, they didn't use ankle monitors! You had to report every Monday morning by 10am and you would submit your weekly schedule. They let you work and gave you 2 hours a week to go to the store and buy food and things you need to get by. You had to account for every hour and state where you were going to be for each hour. So you'd say 12 to 8 home and then 8 to 6 work and then 6 to 12 home and then next day. When it came to the store, they had an approved list of places you could go. You had to show receipts every Monday and the times better be right. They would literally show up at work and make sure I was there, my place at 230 am to make sure I was there. I'd be pulling into my drive way after work and they'd be there waiting to make sure I was there. They would visit you all the time then slow down and then visit you hard hoping you would think they just came so you're good for atleast a few days... Shit was a major set up fr....
