I grew up in MD and moved to CA 20 years ago. I can't help but laugh when I hear other states complain about property taxes. I pay $11k year in property tax. Unless you live in Manhattan, NJ, or CT you don't know how good you have it. Also one of my childhood bros was complaining the other day that it's going to cost $200 to new his vehicle for TWO years. I pay almost $300 EVERY YEAR! You better believe my family and I are GTFO of CA very soon. We visit my parents every summer and despite the humidity my kids beg me to move us back. My wife however isn't a fan.

I’ve lived in Garrett County for most of my life. Here in “Mountain Maryland” we sometimes feel cut off from the rest of the state, but most of us still take pride in being one of Maryland’s best kept secrets. We experience every bit of each season. Crime is low. Traffic is almost nonexistent. Schools are good. There’s lots to do outdoors from boating, to hiking to snow skiing. The only bad thing, is it rains A LOT. Something’s gotta be done about the rain and maybe the 7 months of potential snow! 😂

You are right about people referring to counties instead of cities. In Southern Maryland we always made a point to let people know we are from SOUTHERN Maryland. It’s been years since I’ve lived in MD (moved out in 2008 to join the army), but even to this day people will ask where I’m from. I don’t say Maryland, I say Southern Maryland. People are shocked and wonder, “does MD have a South?” Yes it does! lol

Lived in Maryland my whole life! Grew up in Anne Arundel, vacationed growing up at OC and up at Deep Creek Lake, then went to college on the Eastern Shore. I've had so many friends say "I hate Maryland there's nothing here" and I would say "you clearly have not traveled throughout Maryland". We have every season, we have the bay (and the Ocean), farmland, cities, forests, mountains, smaller cities/towns, we've got it all. I absolutely love it here but the only con is that it is getting pretty expensive. A lot of our family friends left and have wanted to come back but it's really hard to come back due to how pricey housing is and having to commute to DC or Baltimore to make enough (not everyone but most people I know). Thanks for this video, it was a fun watch to see our MD get some love (:

I grew up in Carroll County right on the border of Baltimore county but moved to CA 20 years ago. I still visit and bring my family every summer. Compared to LA, there are just so many great activities for kids to get into. There's a huge creek & stream system around Liberty Reservoir that runs by my parent's house. My son could play in there from sun up to sun down every day if I let him and there are so many bodies of water to fish out of which is something my son and I do together quite a bit. Then there's snow in the winter they love playing in. And the tipping point for me is how much better the public school system is in MD compared to CA. Every time we visit both of my kids beg me to move us there but my wife isn't a fan of the area. Otherwise I'd have moved us back 4 years ago.

The City of Arlington had lots and lots of Red Light Cameras. I always tried to avoid Red Light Cameras. We finally got rid of them mainly because they were a reason and a cause for many accidents. A thought on the 'county specific' thing for MD: Living in Maryland, one thing I found out (after looking up wiki pages sometimes and other government sources) is that the counties are essentially the main and sometimes the only form of local governments in most part of the state, much like how cities and towns function in many other states (especially moving up NE to other NE states, from PA to MA). The county governments from my understanding are the main provider for municipal services, such as public safety, utilities, schooling, planning, etc. While the largest city, Baltimore (city), is essentially its own county, most other areas are considered 'unincorporated', meaning they're not within a jurisdiction that's usually below a county, such as a town or even many cities. Including some of the more populated 'suburban' areas. Especially the suburbs of Baltimore & DC. If I remembered correctly, Howard & Baltimore counties have no incorporated municipal governments below the county, while Montgomery is pretty much the same. Even Anne Aurundel County is similar, in that famous 'places' in those counties are merely a 'neighborhood' of the county, such as Silver Spring, Bethesda, Glen Brunie, Ellicot City (literally a 'city' without a local 'city' government), Columbia, Towson, you name it. Some of the most famous places in PG counties are mostly incorporated, but still, there are famous, populated areas in PG county that is not. For example, National Harbor. In fact, I saw someone claiming that MD has one of the fewest number of local governments. Partly due to that probably. This is especially interesting as when you cross the good old Mason Dixon line. Everything is essentially flipped. From PA to MA, those states are almost entirely incorporated. Every square inch of the land is part of a city, town/township, village, 'borough', or whatever they call it. But the point is there's essentially not a single area in ANY of the counties in those states that is not part of a 'local municipality'. And it usually is those local municipal governments under a county that performs local government services. In PA to NY the counties usually only have 'traditional' functions such as managing jails and courts, etc. While from CT to MA the county as a level of local government has pretty much been abolished from what I remember. Although to me that doesn't mean saying certain people or things are in a specific county in those states doesn't make the most sense. For example, I found myself better at remembering the suburban counties for Philly & NYC in their own states than the specific town or 'city' or whatever local jurisdiction.

@@CarynGardiner Baltimore area people NEVER discuss the county they are in. That seem to be more of a DC area thing. We in Baltimore say we are from (e.g.) ... Essex, Severna Park, Randallstown, East Baltimore, West Baltimore, Roland Park, Hunt Valley, Columbia, Ellicott City, Whitelock, Hamilton, Owings Mills, Reisterstown, Park Heights, Pimlico, Lauraville, Dickeyville Roland Park, etc.. etc... because we have hundreds of neighborhoods - including suburbs that are VERY distinct, different, and original. So you are half right forsure. I only hear DC metro folks say "I am from Montgomery County or PG County"... they will say "I live in Frederick, though. And definitely Western Maryland folks identify with their county. Eastern Shore people say they are from the Eastern Shore as one - Not so much Queen Annes or St. Marys unless you ask were their town is located.....and Southern Maryland folks seem to identity as one. The political diversity is real. I spent a few weeks out of each summer in the early 2000's with a relative that lived in PG County, and then Anne Arundel County. They voted blue for most elections and weren't happy about the results of the 2016 presidential election. Even so they loved Larry Hogan and voted him in 2018 in a pivotal midterm election. And this is what a majority of the state of MD did as Hillary won Maryland in 2016 and Hogan won the state in his 2018 re-election bid. Living in New England the first time I drove out to Frederick, Anapolis, and eventually the eastern shore with relatives in MD it opened my eyes to the diversity of the state. Metro access into DC from specific areas of MD by DC are phenomenal. Camden Yards is my favorite ballpark made in the last 35 years (even though I am a Yankees fan). RIP to the ESPN Zone in the inner harbor which was a fun play to hang out as a kid.

We now live in Howard County. Lovely lovely place. County services (schools, libraries, sanitation, law enforcement, fire department) are the best of any place we’ve lived (for reference we’re a Navy family that lived in Norfolk area (5y) then Northern VA (30+y) then retired to the Boston suburbs to help with grandkids). We now live in a suburbs-type place surrounded by real farms. Heaven. And the deer are serious. I’m a gardener and I hate them a little. And honestly MA was waaay worse for ticks than here. Bad traffic is mostly in areas around the DC metro area. But that’s fine w us because we can enjoy beautiful museums and arboretums and whip back to our little paradise the same day. Also remember we have access to metro (although our end of the red line is down for a little while to make it even better!) I highly recommend Maryland and especially Howard County!

If not… then like me, you just complain to your conservative friends that you manage to find! Also, remember that the schools are going to reflect the politics of the county, heck, even Frederick county just north of us has now transitioned to being blue with the schools reflecting this in every way that you can imagine. Regarding other things she said, I’d probably have mentioned something like the summer heat before the copperhead snakes. I’ve never seen one of those. Both my wife and I worked at the time and made over 160000 combined income and we’re STILL having a hard time just getting by (not taking expensive vacations, buying frivolous BS, etc) we are just talking necessities like bills and keeping the lights on. Their footprints are left in their architectural designs of their churches, beautiful colonial homes, and their academic institutions. St. John’s University (1696) in Annapolis and Baltimore City Johns Hopkins University founded by Maryland Quaker Johns Hopkins. It is due to these influences black descendants have plots of land and settlements from Dundalk to Worchetster Counties. Three Native American Tribes well respected on all four corners.
