Do you understand the theory behind modes but still struggle to improvise with them?
Do your attempts at improvisation sound like scale practice over a backing track?
Do you feel as though the large scale patterns you memorised are keeping you in a box, preventing you from being able to turn those scales into music?
Well, you are not alone! All guitar players go through this when it comes to learning and applying the modes of the major scale.
We learn the theory behind the modes and gain an understanding of where they come from and how they are constructed. We understand how and when to apply them over different chord progressions and we’ve even gone to the effort to memorise patterns for each one all across the fretboard in our practice routines.
And yet, whenever you feel inspired to play and throw on that modal backing track, as soon as you start playing, nothing comes out but uninspired, robotic scale runs that don’t sound dissimilar to your unaccompanied scale practice.
It can be a dejecting experience to go through but fortunately there are many solutions to this extremely common problem that guitar players encounter.
These solutions often become apparent when you simply take the time to analyse what triads and larger chords you can build by stacking thirds from each degree of whatever scale it is that you’re trying to make a staple of your improvisational toolbox.
In this free KZread lesson, I focus on the dorian mode and the major triad pair that occurs naturally when you stack thirds from the 3rd and 4th scale degrees.
This is a great improvisational nugget that the dorian mode offers us and I guarantee that it will help you in your quest to improvise and write solos that sound musical and tasteful with the dorian mode.

Sorry everyone, at 2:33 I made a mistake. I played a C major triad instead of a C minor, which is what it should have been. The triad built from the 1st degree of C dorian is a MINOR triad. Rather than playing fret 12 on the low E (which would be the major 3rd of C) I should have played fret 11 (Eb, the flat 3rd of C). The irony of that appearing right after I warn that this is an advanced guitar lesson 😅

Great lesson for sure! At 2:44 you accidentally said B Major instead of Bb Major, but you played the right notes for Bb Major (Bb D F). Your playing, phrasing, teaching of theory and videos are all great btw! One of the BEST teachers I've found anywhere as I'm a performing musician who is always looking to improve my lead playing and overall understanding of music in general. I've been playing guitar for 32 years and teaching for about 18 years and your videos not only help me play better, but also teacher better too! Thanks Rossco, this is genius! For me you're almost getting five positions of Dorian covering the 12 frets but it's a lot easier to memorise and use as it just feels more fluid. Half steps and double stops easily utilised and it can easily be expanded on to the other strings if you know your CAGED!🤘🤘🤘

People try to make Modes sooooo confusion, when in reality they are simple as pie. The Dorian of A is simply G major. The Aeolian of A is simply C major. The Mixolydian of A is simply D major.
Bruvvvvvv this was absolutely elite!! Seems so simple now. This connected the Maj6 in such a useful way for me. For example, I've been utilising the jimi hendrix type licks were you slide from the F to the A and then hammer on like crazy to the notes available on that F inv ( Barring 10th fret of A D G B) And then doing this trick the same for the Eb Maj. I signed up to your course last night too. Not too shabby, although I'd like for the PDFs to all be available in one place instead of having to go into every individal lesson and downloading them that way. Good shit bruv keep it up

Sounds good Ross. More like a keyboard player approach as they have more available fingers, where as a lot of guitarists will visualise a minor pentatonic and flesh it out. There’s a good video were the composer Leonard Bernstein explains modes on a piano and it’s more chordal and expansive.
I already play ROCK/Funk Pick Up The Pieces and play the horn part on the guitar , and have some string skipping m7 arpeggios that I learned off Frank Gambale that I use to solo over. These riffs are going to add some serious spice to what I was getting bored with….. Thanks

You started with Dorian is the most commonly used Major scale mode. Its actually a Minor scale mode.

Yes, dorian has a predominantly minor tonality but it is built from the 2nd degree of a parent scale, that being the major scale.

Yup! It has a minor tonality but it's built from the 2nd degree of its 'parent scale', that being the major scale.

Hey Ross, this is one of your best lessons - thank you so much! One of the things I always struggle with is these modes (Dorian, Phrygian, etc..). I tend to "think chords" and so I don't really "care" about the mode. How do you feel about what I'm saying? does it make sense to ignore the modes and simply focus on the chords and highlighting them? I am not sure if I'm missing some of these colors of these modes because of that. I'll much appreciate your thoughts, perhaps even make a video on this if makes sense.

Chords are absolutely wonderful to be able to spell out all across the neck BUT knowing the modes can help you provide more color. For example, playing the notes of a C chord will sound fine over a C but what if you added a #4.... suddenly your taken into a whole new realm. This has sent you into the Lydian wormhole. Or... you are playing C and you fall back to the minor 7th, well now you've funked it up into the Mixolydian landscape. Chords are outlines, chord tones stay right on those outlines. You can draw a nice picture just tracing an outline. Adding color tones will give that picture a whole new feel. These color tones come from the modes of the key you are in. You can think of it as just playing chord extensions also. A Cmajor7#11 is a lydian chord, a C7 is a mixolydian chord, a Cmb9b13 is a phrygian chord, Watch every video you can on the intro to modes. Don't worry about learning everything at once. After a week of watching 100 different videos, you will have it grasped in no time and your playing will only benefit from having more fretboard freedom than you had before

interesting that the step pattern is same backwards and forwards too, ie, take the same steps going down, instead of up, and you get same thing, it's 'mirror' inversion is the same..
do you have a video on how to set up Neural and connect it with your ? A lot of us guitarists are apprehensive on jumping on with software and technology use as it seems overwhelming to set up. Perhaps you could do a video on this promoting Neural further, demonstrating its uses and then do a give away of an interface capable of connecting guitar to computer? I think Neural would be stoked with that.

Yes there is a major triad pair found within every mode of the major scale. They all start from different scale degrees

I’m so confused at 6:30. I thought the Dorian scale formula had a raised 6th… Great lesson though, I need to rewatch with a guitar in my hand. Some tasty sounds were played.

Thanks! You're right, it does have a raised/major/natural 6th. When I write scale formulas, I do so using the major scale as a blueprint. Meaning, if I write the major scale as 1 2 3 4 5 6 7, that's implying a major 2nd, major 3rd, perfect 4th, perfect 5th, major 6th and major 7th. So when you see '6' on its own in this dorian scale formula at 6:30, it is a major/natural/raised 6th that's implied. Does that make sense?

Isn't the first triad you've shown C major triad and not C minor triad? There shouldn't be E note in C dorian as far as I know?

The 3rd and the 7th is flat. The 6th is raised a half step which separates the Dorian mode from the Aeolian mode. So the E is an E flat in the key of C.

he's using e flat. not e. first triad is F, think of it like borrowing from mixolydian then lydian then finally going to dorian if you wanna simplify it. it's not the correct context but it's the simple way of looking at it.

Dorian has a flat 3rd, not a major 3rd. The b3rd of C is Eb. So building a triad from the first degree of C dorian gives you: R - C b3 - Eb 5 - G
