What the uninspiring DJI Air 3 says about the drone industry
Ғылым және технология
It’s true, all of the rumors have been true. The new $1,099 (and up) DJI Air 3 drone has two cameras, 46 minutes of battery life, improved connectivity with Occusync 4, a brand-new controller, and a brand-new design resembling the recently released Mavic 3 and Mavic 3 Pro. But is it enough to make me want to buy it? #drone #drones #technology

Considering what they're doing with the Inspire 3 and the Ronin 4D, calling DJI 'not innovative' feels like a bit of a stretch. I do agree that their product line-up is convoluted, and it may be a boring time to review drones every year, but most people don't buy a new drone every year. If you skip two generations every time, all these smaller updates (like 360° obstacle sensing!) add up to real progress. The only space where I feel they're dropping the ball is in programmable waypoints. I want to be able to program and execute the perfect flight path instead of having to rely on full manual or master modes.

There's no questioning the quality of DJI's consumer drone line-up, but I totally agree with you they are releasing drones now with only incremental improvements, plus their diverse range of drones means they cannot improve the Mini or Air models too much without cannibalising their more expensive models. DJI's drone releases with their associated marketing/influencers has enormous similarity with the constant release of new Apple iPhones.

In Europe, most important than anything else, you can fly an Air3 in C1 almost like a sub 250 grams (the difference in rules is marginal). Im happy with the update. I think that just like with smartphones, laptops or cars, eventually technology comes to a point where you pretty much get a perfect product and then its just about fine tunning what you have and making it better little by little. Ofcourse some inovations will come over time but not as much as in the early stages of developement.
I feel like that's the one to get. With the Air 3 a couple of features come together where it really makes sense. Especially in Europe where they finally get the drones certificated so you'll be able to fly them with the new regulations.

How do the range/signal compare between the Mini 3 Pro, Air 3, and Mavic 3 Pro in real world use (with trees, buildings, etc.)? Does the new controller increase the range of the Mini 3 Pro? My Mini 3 Pro has terrible range and signal compared to my Mavic 2 Pro so I'm looking at getting the Air 3 or Mavic 3 Pro unless the new controller alone will increase my Mini 3 Pro range.
The added omnidirectional obstacle sensing will help and I'm interested if it improves the waypoint recognition. I used my Air 2s during the recent heat dome in the desert and it was basically unusable. The battery was eaten up quickly, the drone was super hot, and my iPhone stopped because it said it was overheated. My biggest problem with shooting with my drone is the amount of time it takes to get it out and up into the air. I often don't have the extra time it takes to get it out hook it up to my phone and get it into the air. The preset paths and master shots help but it is still time consuming.

Ahh yes, I don't love flying tethered to the phone. Newer controllers eliminate the need for that and it's much much easier to get it up and flying. Don't give into the hype.
I've had the Air2S since 2021 and it's been great. I've been wanting a longer lens ever since the Mavic 2 Zoom disappointed me with only 8 bit video. I won't be running out to buy this, but it is the drone I'm most interested in right now. My main drawback is the lack of RC Pro support for the Air 3; I use the HDMI output on the Smart Controller. Thanks for letting us know about the image quality; I was wondering about that. Also I hadn't thought about the ND issues with the different apertures; good point. As already mentioned: there is huge upgrade for Europe you may missed: the C1 Classifcation!!! Flying in open category A3 made my Mavic Air 2 more or less useless for the last 2 years! So more than enough for me to upgrade from Mavic Air 2 (NOT 2S) to Air 3!!! C1 Label plus better Sensor plus tele Lens - what else should I expect?
Well I was very excited to get waypoints, more obstacle avoidance, a second focal length, and advanced follow focus system, coming from the air2s. Most of the specs from the mavic 3 pro for half the price. But if you already have the mavic why even consider buying a mid level drone?

I'd say yes, probably a good time to upgrade. I don't love the 7x zoom on the Mavic 3 Pro, the dropoff in quality is noticeable... but I love its main sensor there. That's what I mean, picking a drone today is harder than ever now. Each one has "something" worth the upgrade. Mavic 3 - many lenses, big main sensor. Mini 3 Pro - legally most approachable and native 4K filming. Air 3 - competitive price, two good cameras (Main lens similar to Mini 3 Pro, Tele similar to Mavic 3 Pro). Tough call. What are your priorities here? Where are you posting your videos (or photos?)? - Vjeran
I was anxiously waiting for this drone. Bought the mavic air and two months later the mavic air 2 came out and it was a HUGE upgrade, so I got newer one. A year later, that air 2s came out and it also featured a big improvement on the camera, but no lateral obstacle avoidance, so I kept the mavic air 2 and still use it. I think DJI is going the apple way by adding S, S max, ultramax, bummer. I think I'll wait for the Air 3 S and a 1 inch sensor.
Im new to drones and 1 week ago I was so sure to buy the mini 3 pro to start with. But I can legally fly the Air 3, because I have the license to it.. But now I sit on youtube for hours, not knowing which drone to get. I want mainly to get video footage - what can you experts suggest?? What I’ve thought dji should do for a while and maybe they will have it on the mavic 4 but I doubt it is that if would be so interesting to me if you could attach a small gimbal under the drone with a controller dedicated to controlling that camera. Sorta like the inspire. Like have the mavic 4 and then the mavic 4 Cine being able to do that or maybe have both models able to do it but the gear for it only comes with the cine version. Will DJI ever do that? No. But would I love to see it? Yes. It would allow for dual operating and you would be able to get shots flying through much tighter gaps and spaces because all your doing is flying while a friend controls the other camera

Like the longer flight time on it, don't like the two small cameras, better would have been to put a true variable optical zoom up to 7x (after that it could go digital) on that Hasselblad, it would not make the camera much longer and since they had to redesign the drone anyway, I think they should have done the job properly. Also, I asked them if the RC Pro would work with it, they said no, so I did not buy.

Honestly the features are quite good for the price but man they just need to give us a few things to make this drone so much better: an option to reduce in camera sharpness and a bump in bit-rate! I see no difference in the footage between this and the Mini 3 Pro. Proper D-Log + 10-bit 4:2:2 at 200Mbps and they'd 'ave smashed it *sigh*

I have an air 2s and a mini 3 pro, a perfect pair to maneuver through air space legally and get it done. Internal nd's and real way point mission planning is what I will be waiting for in this general cost range.
Come on a Stack BSI sensor on a drone is uninspiring?
The air is their mid range series of drones, I don't really expect anything too inspiring from it, just a good capable drone that fits their current lineup. I think if you want to see the exciting stuff DJI is working on you need to look at the inspire 3, particularly the fly by wire system and local tracking modules, and I don't think those were ready to be put into a drone at this price point. In a few years when they're on their next product line I think we'll start to see the trickle down of some of that tech which could be very exciting for small budget cinematic shooters. Looking at the air three compared to my air 2 I can see a number of improvements that came off pricier drones in their lineup that are exciting if you last drone was somewhere in that line and time range. There are probably too many iterations out there if you're going to fly every drone on the market but you also need to keep in mind that DJI isn't expecting everyone to buy every drone on the market either, if the jump is pretty good from one product line to the next around the same price point that's going to be the draw for the people geared at that price point. I bought an air 2 a few years back because I was flying a Mavic pro 2 and inspire 2 for my job, couldn't justify the full price of a mavic pro 2 for my personal drone but wanted something familiar and capable for personal flying/pratice, and the air 2 has been great in that regard. Now that my air 2 creeping toward a thousand hours on it and is showing it's age I'm currently debating the virtues of the mini 3 against the air 3 and the Pro 3 all against my wallet and the air three is right in the sweet spot that's very appealing.
That Air 2s was like the iPhone 4s when it came out - solid and don't need to upgrade for years. We do use the Mini 3 pro now and it's another one that we won't need to upgrade for a long time.
I'm puzzled. I had the phantom 4 pro which had a 1" sensor, variable aperture but it was a hassle to carry around. Sold it last year and bought the mini 3 pro and like 18 ND filters for it. Can't say that I was super impressed with it in terms of image quality. I sold it today and were exited to buy the Air 3 but now I'm hesitant since it's exactly the same sensor as on the mini 3 pro.

@@OGGMagnus they have never talked about it. Only drones they considered was Mavic 2 Pro and 2 Pro Enterprise. They are clearly selling the drone as a Legacy Drone and have done for the last year or so.
Hope your right ... Waiting for Air 3s
Needs aperture control.
The 1st honest review. This is a small upgrade, nothing to be get excited. Mini 3 pro looks more of a gem with 249gr. weight comparing to 720gr of this one.
Would like to see a hybrid FPV/camera drone from them - something that shoots video like a Mini 3 Pro but has an FPV mode and supports goggles. Would also like to see higher bitrate and codec options. 4K is plenty, but some flavor of ProRes or something at a high bitrate would make the footage so much more versatile

@@knife-wieldingspidergod5059 IMO this doesn't constitute sponsored. He didn't attend hosted event by DJI (expenses covered by the host), nor he was paid for any other work by DYI (like some other reviewers were). He was sent this drone for a review, and he provided a (very) honest one.

Yes, DJI and every other company send us products ahead of release. We sign a contract, which is a loan agreement, and then return the products back. We do not accept any paid endorsements or sponsorships of any kind. You can read more here www.theverge.com/ethics-statement - Vjeran

Regarding your second comment - if you pay for a product yourself, aren't you automatically inclined to justify your purchase? Meaning, your judgement is skewed and you're convincing yourself the money you spent is worth it. - Vjeran
The only space where I feel they're dropping the ball is in programmable waypoints.
That's generally what happens when a product reaches maturity. Iterative changes because that's cheaper than innovation around every corner

I understand your point, however isn't this part of making drones mainstream consumer products though? Overall ease of use. No obvious or important weaknesses. Reasonably priced with a variety of purchasing options. There used to be a saying about IBM that no one ever got fired for committing their company to IBM's mainframe/mini-computers. Are we at the point where DJI's drone are now the safe option which will disappoint no one who buys one?
Once my mavic air 2 hits 750 miles of use, it's time to CONSIDER getting a new drone, but by then we'll probably have the DJI Air 6
I'm totally going to use "in-noise camera reduction" in the future.
I just want longer flight time. My air2 is plenty. I would upgrade for more time and adjustable aperture.
360 filming with Insta360 tech should be the next step...or a BYO solution, just a chassis and basic controlability with interchangeable lens.
Back-lit stacked sensors, that's the main upgrade. But yeah once again no one talks about that 😅
Thank you DJI for Making the Mavic 2 pro so good that I don't feel the need for any upgrades yet.
At some point this will be available without the controller and my RC-Pro won’t be compatible with it. I’ve only had it a month. Compatibility needs to be better.
Thanks for sharing your toughts, You should not be so Jaded. DJI are leading a very competitive market, it makes sens that they prefer doing steady updates instead of very spaced major features updates that profits no one in reality and in the long run (they tend to be fragile and at the expense of users). Innovation takes time, that is boring to you, but one year in research and production is a blink of an eye. I'm gladly updating from my Air 2S to the 3 for : stronger connectivity (you can't see the difference, until you see it, lots of cases where you wish you had the extra push), same quality and resolution for the telelens (rare in the drone world), full obstacles detection (again, super usefull on a day to day basis), more range, more battery, quieter, slightly better night recording, charging hub with accumulator mode (!!!), etc

Appreciate your response and your views here! Was slightly worried how some might react. 😅 But you brought up good points. I, for example, haven't used obstacle avoidance sensors in years. Whenever I try them out i still find them too sensitive, but not advanced enough to avoid smaller obstacles i.e. branches, other drones (...) Connectivity is also not high on my priority list. Camera-wise also depends on if people use drones for photos or videos. I love photos taken with the Mavic 3 line. That's where I see substantial improvements. But video has been good on Air 2S, Mini 3, Mini 3 Pro and, of course, M3 for a long time. Cheers! - Vjeran

I wouldn’t say it’s uninspiring, (I upgraded my Mini 3 Pro to Mavic 3 Classic), but the Air 3 is still a solid choice for just about anyone who wants to have fun and get relatively good quality. Maybe not the best quality, but really good nonetheless.
DJI really tried hard to get the market to forget about Remote ID... Neat drone but I have to be blown away if I'm going to buy a new over 250g drone for recreation... I'll just stick with the air2s/mini3pro combo for now.
To me I agree these companies are too greedy honestly. The incremental updates are straight from the auto industry and Apple playbook. I will continue to fly my Air 2 and Mini 2 until something earth shattering comes along
DJI’s sales model with all the incremental changes and the quick planned obsolescence of “older” drones(MA2 is only 3yrs old and has not been added to US RID) really rubs me the wrong way. Sure, I still have DJI products, and Autel. This new Air 3 has me seriously giving Autel’s Lite+ another look, as it has a 1” sensor and 20mp camera.
U have said everything I intended too say for for, thanks u hit it right on the head I really don't care who doesn't like it. it's the truth and the whole truth.

Dji should have Done this --- Dji Mini 3 and 3 pro with 1/1.3" - CMOS sensor, Dji Air 3 and 3s with 1" sensor and Dji Mavic 3 and 3 pro with 4/3" type sensor. This way there is a clear differnece between the Mini, Air and the Mavic. The Mavic 3 cassic should have been the Air 3s.

The whole Sub 250 gram thing has to be weighed also. If stepping up, Go all the way up. Don't half arse it. The air 3 is somewhere in the middle.

The company with the most innovative approach to cameras at large is Insta360. I imagine they will dip their toes in the drone waters in 2024.
