What the Pro's Wont Tell You About Learning to Jump on a Mountain Bike | How to Jump a Mountain Bike
One of the hardest things to learn on a mountain bike for me was learning to jump. Though, I knew how to bunnyhop for a few years before I learned to Jump, I did not understand how to utilize the bunnyhop in conjunction with jumping a mountain bike. The pro's would say that learning to bunnyhop is essential for learning to jump, but still I could not figure out how the two worked together. In this video I'm going to be revealing the mystery behind how bunnyhopping works in conjunction with jumping a mountain bike. I will also teach you some very useful secrets that pretty much every video by a pro that I have seen fails to reveal.

    I’m 57 coming from a BMX background with no experience on full suspension bikes. I have done the dead sailor, got bucked and cased while my friends would clear jumps with perfection. I began just focusing on suspension set up to give me the ability to pop up after compressing the front. I would hit jumps and make it safely and sometimes even boost a jump and getting consistent is still an art form. Those blind jumps are no problem and Now other people are watching me. My advice is to just focus on safely jumping to get the hang of it and practice boosting on table top jumps. Speed , angle of stance and level out will come with time. Crashes rarely happen even though I have had some close calls ( like riding 🎉he front tire out after sending a jump to fast) now my bike is called ,”little pop” and life is good

    I'm nobody, but the biggest difference seems to be adapting to the lack of rear sus rebound and compression. Jumping a hardtail can be easier in some ways. I find it more intuitive to think about compressing just the front fork as opposed to weighting the bottom bracket (therefore both sus components) and transferring weight for micro-adjustment of rotation.

    Can I add same as this comment, but with a little more. Standing UP. Not getting weight back, but standing up. I was trying to push through my feet the whole time, then pulling up some, with straight arms, WRONG. Push through feet and arms, to load up, then stand up at the top of lip. The bars will come back as you hit the lip, so you don't need to pull back, which I was doing. Arms should be straight, which will stop you going off to the side. ONCE OFF THE LIP, Then, gently push forward to meet the landing. I just need to get braver standing up now. Watched the slo mo here loads of times, and finally, the standing up bit clicked. Still not sending it but now know where I'm falling down. Thanks

  • @Petr388

    @Petr388

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@derman3658 Well it really depends on the shape of the jump, but basically you should throw yourself a little bit back if you really want to get some height. But consider going back with your upper body only, not your butt. Especially on the steeper lips it will be happening naturally, because it prevents you from soaking the top of the lip which leads to potential OTB. In smaller lips or less steep you should lean back more by yourself and you will get the maximum potencial from the lip. I think when you start to jump more steeper lips, it teaches you by itself naturally to push your upperbody little bit backwards and afterwards you transfer this 'body knowledge' efortlessly to less steep lips.

    Thank you for this! I always find it incredibly helpful to hear people who obviously have a brain and aren‘t 420-ing all of their rides talk about the fear. I am currently working on finally mastering a 5ft drop that has me at 50/50 for coming down rolling (unfortunately only rolling) or going down badly and a lot of my locals are talking it up or down as in those who can do it will talk it down and the rest makes it sound like it is sending Everest. It‘s great to hear and read in the comments that I am not the only guy who contemplates his life choices doing this stuff, and although going off a lip is not strictly related to my issue (my last attempt was a bunny to nosedive and it has scarred my soul), the open way in which you address your own fear was super helpful. A friend who‘s pretty much my level if not a little behind on some things just send my drop and I feel pressured to keep up, so cross your fingers for me ;-)

    I'm a year in and suffer from the same issue though less and less as I practice. He doesn't cover it in the video because you're not pulling up coming out of preload and its something he probably didn't experience. When you load the bike, you shouldn't have to pull up, its more like, as the bike is unloading you're also unweighting in a sense. Everything comes up together and you shift your weight to level the bike as he explains.

    I've seen many tutorials on how to jump using the bunny hop but AFAIK you were the only one who mentioned to forget step 3 of bunny hop and the reason behind it. You are a very good teacher!

    The best explanation! I’ve gone to every “famous” MTB KZread channel, and they missed the part where we should get rid of the backward push of the manual. They wouldn’t mention it either, but they didn’t explicitly say we should omit that step. For two months I could barely raise my bike from the ramp and if you had seen my shin I had my pedal pins tattooed all over it. Also, I never heard about leveling the bike.

    Great video man! I feel the same when it comes to jumping, and I’m trying to improve. I’ve found that an easy way to start is following someone with more experience, it helps you judge your speed and build up confidence. I didn’t think it would make such a big difference until I tried it. Thats my tip, keep up the good work!

    it's amazing how I get better understanding about so many tricks explained on so smaller channels by unknown guys (I do not want to underestimate this guy whose really awesome) compared to mainstream channels (pinkbike, gmbn, trail boss, etc.). He pointed few things why are you doing them and what they cause as a result which are simple, like importance of preloading both suspensions equally and exactly why is that important, etc... Awesome video!
