Ya know if there is one game I wish would get another sequel that isn't just some "generic rally game" it would be MotorStorm. That game was fire on ps3 (sometimes literally lol). Especially apocalypse and pacific rift.

I always liked Wipeout solely for the speed. it's incredibly fast, so fast that endgame speed classes are pretty much a blur and require perfect muscle memory to even clear races. I think that was both its blessing and its curse. Skill curve is too pronounced and learning the track by memory is essential for getting medals on TAs, Zones and some races. Venom class was pretty much a different game, almost boring. But then going up to Flash, Rapier, then Phantom was where the real meat was at. I believe the skill requirement, the technicality and complexity of its mechanics and some pretty dumb race design choices in 2048 is what eventually doomed the franchise. Wipeout was essentially a futuristic driving simulator, disguised as an accessible racer.

i have the thought that maybe if the game let you play the higher speed classes from the start maybe it would be more successful? i mean,sure the game needs to learn the new players and all,but forcing you to play on slower speed classes not only is kinda boring once you finally mostly master the game but also gives a misleading view of what the game has to offer I love f zero but I'm tired of it's fanboys trash talking wipeout as a ""slow game"" when they obviously only played through venom or flash class at max

I love wipeout also for the sheer skill required for the high speeds. Fusion was my first PS2 game so I base most racing games off of how magical this title initially made me feel. I started racing phantom on Wipeout Omega straight from the start and was like WTFFFFFF but I persevered till I got gud, it really gets the blood pumping and the trigger fingers aching for that perfect speed lap. I also love how you can alter the tail and nose dive for an extra element of control when hitting hairpins and sharp wall rides. An element you just can’t achieve with wheels on tarmac… super unique, and developed not far from where I live!

It's actually all about learning how to anticipate sharp turns and use the right and left brakes to drift and position your ship straight with the track after the curve. But yeah. It requires muscle memory and learning the tracks.

Yeah it's my second fave for the system behind gravity rush. It still looks amazing all these years later. Tjey really nailed the aesthetics and gave it a timeless appeal

Imagine a new Wipeout game made on Unreal Engine 5 with amazing and well done realistic lightning, particle and destruction effects. Debris flying off ships after being shot by cannon, rockets and missiles etc, becomes part of the environment hazards and interaction adding a whole new gameplay factor to the franchise. VR support. Background stories and cinematics for each of the racing teams and pilots and so much more... Oh man, it would be freaking awesome!

Wipe out as far as I'm concerned is definitively the most Superior anti-gravity racing game ever conceived. I have been waiting for Sony to release a Wipeout PlayStation model. Until they do I will be in Xbox fan.

i miss when Sony made "gameplay first" games for adults,they had a very cool vibe and vision,where very unique even to this day but this days they only make boring Hollywood copy-outs to please the critics,skill based games such as wipeout have no place in their new mediocre line up unfortunately

I still find myself sticking on the wipeout original soundtrack from the PlayStation titles and still sounds fantastic. Wish as well they could redo G Police as that was a great game as well done by the same people.

Now that would be good! As long as they kept the physics used in 2097 or Wip3out though. As soon as fusion was released, the physics got all messed up. Pure, Pulse, HD and Omega were slightly better than fusion. But the floaty feeling was completely gone. Wip3out was the last *real* wipeout imo. But 2097 is still the best. They were hard games to master, but so rewarding when you got it down well. Unfortunately the moronic masses want ott explosions, childish barrel rolls, forgiving ship handling, and bouncing missiles... The original wipeouts are too unforgiving for the modern mindset: Back then, you picked up a weaon, it was use it or lose it. No silly 'absorb' option. The square button was literally the 'discard weapon' button. In wipeout 3, if you were destroyed, there was no stupid explosion. You'd keel to one side, and drop to the floor as the AG units failed. If your missile couldn't make it round a corner, then tough luck - no bouncing off walls. If you needed a speed boost, then there wasn't a ridiculous and childish 'barrel roll'. You could expend a great deal of shield energy for a few seconds of hyper-thrust though.

@@dancoulson6579 aint no way you think the pit lane was better than the ability to absorb pick ups for health. and idk if you know this but barrel rolls consume shield energy too. also implying that the new games arent hard to master is moronic. seems like you have hardly played the originals yourself if you think that the modern games have "forgiving handling" as opposed to the old games when feisar and ag systems and especially assegai in wipeout 3 had very forgiving handling. id say even more so than todays ships since they all could easily take basically any corner without air breaks.

I absolutely love Wipeout, I've played every game since their releases and I really do hope they release a true sequel. The music is something I've always loved in all the games.

It's such a shame it's only on PS4 because it's also my favorite VR experience but my PSVR broke and I simply cannot justify spending another 200 dollars on such a mediocre VR system with such a limited game selection. I feel like if Wipeout released a standalone VR game on PC it would probably be a huge hit and gain a sizeable following but the PSVR's small audience seems to have kept it way under the radar :(

wipeout and A.G. racing as a whole is a genre of games that are practically anti-mainstream by design they're difficult they have a steep learning curve they're practically impossible to just 'pick up and play' it's a genre that requires a lot of time and dedication that most people don't, and may never, have. it's only really kept alive by hardcore fans and it's already hard for said fans to get their friends and other people interested, let alone for the company's themselves to get other people interested. nowadays everything is about making it as mainstream and as accessable as possible, something that A.G. racing is practically incapable of being by design, so the genre will effectively always be niche. the genre will never stop having games but what games there will be will always be few and far between and mostly just be passion projects rather then games made with any actual profit in mind but that's part of what makes them beautiful they're only made for the hardcore they're only made for the dedicated they're only made for us *and* *we* *will* *never* *let* *them* *go*

Agreed 1000000% although I think that to an extent the games can be made more accessible. For example, Pilot assist. Sure, in HD/FURY it was a mess, but in 2048 and Omega Collection it is greatly improved. Admittedly I had it enabled on it's "reduced" setting in 2048, which basically just stops you from falling off the track and that's it. And in Omega Collection I use it on a single track on A and A+ class, Sol 2 I think it's called. Because that bastard of a track has no walls. So if you turn too tightly or not enough, you're off to Narnia. But I don't use it on any other track period.

Great video. I'm a huge WipEout fan, and any new game in the series would be an instant system seller for me!

I will never forgive Sony for closing Studio Liverpool or Evolution Studios until they bring back the IP’s they created.

I remember my Mum getting wipeout 3 on PS1 for me when I had no idea what it was. Was blown away by the art design, weapons, epic music etc. Great memories!

I've always yearned for more F-Zero games but WipeOut has usually done well to fill that void.

If you have even a low end PC, and want that wipeout itch scratched, give BallisticNG a try. One of the best wipeout spiritual successors out there.

tbh, I wouldn't be surprised if WipEout succumbed to the same fate as F-Zero, not forgotten by the fans, but not really acknowledged by the company that owns the IP, and probably will never be acknowledged until the far distant future.

I am 39 years old, played Wipeout since the first one,. The tracks became to long, the originals were short intense tracks. I lost interest when the tracks became stretched out, It lost the feeling of speed and agility.

You know what is wrong with Wipeout? Why it doesn't get the attention it truly deserves and never really has? It is HARD. And most people just don't like that. They watch a game like this be played and see how good it looks, but Wipeout requires a lot of patience and dedication to get where it really looks cool , Rapier and Phantom class, and most people fizzle out far before that. People now want games that hold your hand, and let you look like a badass without being one. When this game was made, challenge was still a good thing but over the years, we got shooting games with x-ray vision, and all manner of hand holding because games have to stroke the ego and games that don't just fall over and let people win aren't fun ....which is why gaming is so bland now because everyone has to be able to enjoy every game and Wipeout has never been an " everyone can win " game. If you can play phantom class wipeout competently you are DAMN good and not just ok, and people get easy ass games , run thru them like wet poop paper, then get mad about lack of content and buy DLC. Wipeout is a game from a era that wanted to make great games to play. Nowadays the motivation is so different, bland and generic. Rant over

I think the popularity of the Dark Souls games shows there are people that don't mind a game with some real challenge. There is an excellent Wipeout clone on steam called BallisticNG. For all intents and purposes it IS Wipeout, even the difficulty.

@@Deltaworks23 I hear you but that is an outlier so much so that the game gained popularity for being touted for it's difficulty. Still a long way from being the norm. I've seen ballisticng and slipstream and redout too...they look great and I have yet to build a PC this year but I may check em out. I certainly hope that the new AC doesn't become souls with mechs. It was already difficult, always has been and it has its own identity. But I think it didn't gain mainstream traction because of the same reasons Wipeout didn't.

Oh yeah they also did N-Gen, which was Wipeout but with jets for the PlayStation. Underrated as hell. Very polished with a good soundtrack

Completely agree Wipeout has to be the best futuristic racing game series ever Even just racing series in general 1. Gran Turismo 2. Forza 3. Wipeout

Some things to play in the absence of Wipeout: *Pacer* Supposedly made by X Studio Liverpool devs, it’s one of the more loved current futuristic racers, but one that flies under the radar due to being not very unique *GRIP* GRIP, supposedly made by both X Psygnosis and Attention To Detail devs, is noted aimed at the audience of Rollcage, but does have hoverships and breakneck speed. I would personally recommend this a lot, you don’t have to go through the campaign to unlock things, and it’s a genuinely fun and kind of ridiculous game *Antigraviator* A game considered decent but not most peoples first choice, has confused many with its weapons system and is sometimes referred to as a “shadow of Wipeout”. Like Pacer, it also suffers from not being very unique *Redout* One of the more widely loved games here, with arguably one of the greatest OSTs ever, Redout is insanely fun and fast. It lacks a proper weapons system but that’s forgivable due to the breakneck speed, the likes of which I’ve only seen in F-Zero GX before. Has three DLCS with new tracks to race on too. The only downside is that it used to have a reputation for frame rate issues, someone the devs (34 Big Things) are becoming a bit famous for *Redout 2* The soundtrack isn’t nearly as epic as the original Redout, but it’s the only sequel futuristic racing game we’ve had in years (Fast RMX was like five years ago) and the frame rate issues have returned, mostly on next gen consoles though, so if you’re okay with playing on 30 fps you should be good on that launch model Xbox One or PS4. Retains everything core to the Redout experience as well *Ballistic.NG* Has a habit of turning into a link whenever I type it, so click at your own risk. It’s basically classic Wipeout and is almost indistinguishable from 2097/XL. *Fast RMX* Still thought this would be worth bringing up. I don’t know much of anything about the Fast series so you’re stuck doing your own research

Wipeout 2097 was/is the best Wipeout game ever & the music of Cold Storage, F.S.O.L, Orbital, Leftfield, Chemical Brothers etc was like 40% of the goodness.

It's such a shame that wipeout is dying. Its far better than any racing game and this collection deserves #1 game of all time. Also can we all just agree that the intro cutscene for wipeout 2048 was amazing?

Sony really dropped the ball with Studio Liverpool and wipeout, which was historically a showcase of what any given era of PS could do. Not only did they drop the ball on a graphical/physics showcase, but they let a mechanically rich, difficult, racing game with a growing core fanbase slide out of their line-up. Wipeout was an expensive game to create and i dont think they ever reaped rewards relative to what they expected, but it was a game that could only pick up speed and grow from where it was at.

Wipeout is definitely a System Seller for me!! since original PS I have a simple shortlist necessary for my PS5 purchase: Resident Evil, Elder Scrolls, and Wipeout - and yes I'll wait the long wait. Yes there's a few others too but not many.

I’d absolutely love a new wipeout title. Basically the exact same gameplay and physics in Omega but you manage your own team with ship and livery customisation. And split screen 2 player.

A Wipeout comeback would be perfect right about now with the PS5's 60fps, adaptive triggers and haptic feedback. Imagine feeling the firing of missiles or plasma when you blow up another racer!

9 games total (excluding HD's solo release and Omega Collection) in the main series. The only one to be considered "bad" was Wipeout Fusion, 1 out of 9 GAMES. Legendary series. Sony does not know what they're missing by not porting Omega Collection over to PC and releasing a new mainline entry (which should also get a PC port). I don't pay for PS+ so I can't even play multiplayer yet I still have fun with this solo. Amazingly well crafted racing game, there is NOTHING like it.

The spiritual successor to the first few games is BallisticNG, well worth checking out.

I would be more than happy with a MID-BUDGET PS5 WIPEOUT. I DONT UNDERSTAND WHY SONY CANCELLED THAT GAME. IT’s very annoying. I tried PACER, the game released by the former wipeout team in 2019, it’s advisable for wipeout fans but a bit expensive (40€ on psn). I miss these games so much, arcade racing games like wipeout or burnout… I wish companies and media focused more on midbudget games. Not only on starfields and boring unoriginal american games.

PS5 needs a brand new Wipeout game with all the bells and whistles running at 120fps

What The Hell Happened To F-Zero?

The best wipeout game in my opinion was wipeout fusion, futuristic anti- gravity racing cars with a hint of realism going through the maps it made me feel like I could see myself racing there’s cars. And having 16 cars all racing is so much better than 6 the pit stop was so good as it acted a technical element to the game

Wipe out as a main system seller has long gone. But my thinking is a new Wipeout game as a VR seller may well be what Sony is thinking. Let's hope VR ps5 brings back Wipeout.

I cant think of anyone who didnt like wipeout, and I think a lot of people were waiting for a new Wipeout that never happened and then it became lost in a lot of peoples memories, shame tbh

My professor back in college is one such person who doesn't like WipEout, as she made me lose while I was playing it during a day of school.

Breaking into the Top 100 on WipeoutHD was and is my finest racing (life) achievement.

My favorite was 2048. Such a good game

I will also argue that it Wipeout (and Motorstorm) is a system seller. Hell it’s why I even dipped my toe into the Sony realm. I bought a PSP because of pure, I bought a PS3 because of motorstorm, I bought a PS4 hoping to get new games in the serious. But closing evolution was the last straw. Never buying a Sony console again till those games exist

Playing Wipeout at a friend's convinced me to buy the original PS. Bought a PS2 for Fusion, I also bought the PSP for Pure. The series is perhaps my all time favorite game franchise. But, I wasn't happy about the direction they went with Pulse and HD. Didn't buy a Vita because 2048 couldn't convince me, and I didn't get a PS4 for yet the same Pure/Pulse remake. Although, I have to say, after so many years without, I'm so desperate for some Wipeout action I am considering buying a PS5 if the Omega Collection backwards compatibility turns out OK.

I'm confused, I played all the anthology of wipeout throughout the console developments through the course of console upgrades. The developers dictate the progress of its heritage and only the players can truly demonstrate how well this game is going moving forward. This video has massively misrepresented this game. It will always be there.

I love the VR mode in Omega. I'm one of those lucky people who doesn't ever get motion sick in VR but I tell you, WipEout VR had me retching. I did disable all the comfort options though, so I kinda had it coming.

Studio Liverpool is gone. Dev's scattered everywhere. The closest game that the past remaining Dev's made is Pacer. It's in Steam.

And unfortunately, based on what I played of it... It sucks big time... Redout however, now THAT is fun even with the combat aspect completely removed.

wipeout always was my have fun race whenever i was tired of gran turismo but since gt sport came out , F , it became my main racer game , i love this series and i need a new one !

Would love to see some speed runs of this game.

We are fickle, things that are poppuler today get stale after a while of seeing them over and over again, we will want something new, so hopefully wipeout can be reinvented and back on our screens, there have been a lot of anti grav games besides wipeout but none have the amazing handling and feel that wipeout does.

Who's still playing Wipeout in 2024?! I fired up the old PS3 and have been playing Wipeout HD for the last few days. It's a timeless classic.

I have pretty much no plans to buy a PS5 for now ... unless they announce a new Wipeout game.

Why didn't you guys talk about Formula Fusion (now called Pacer) which was made by the original Wipeout team? Or Redout? These games are the legacy. Such a missed opportunity.

Pacer is cool, but the design of the ships changed for the worst in my opinion since the first trailer.... and the physics are not as pleasing as the Wipeout physics. Redout is just straight F-zero, too damn frenetic

Just imagine playing a new wipeout and playing it on a simrig where you control the ship with like a flight simulator wheel and then vr support that would be an amazing experience

I loved Wipeout but I wish there was a way to play your own music whilst racing. Me and mate managed to figure out a way but it was only on a racetrack by racetrack basis (cue up the game CD, pause when about to race, insert your disc of choice, cue track, and then unpause and race!).

Wipeout XL was the best of all.

Fusion was the last true Wipeout game in many ways i.e. one that was designed for the latest home console hardware. All the others have been handheld games or ports of handheld games. That doesn't makenthem bad, of course, I like them all but Wipeout hasn't been a major series for Sony since Fusion. I wish this weren't true, but Wipeout was always more influential than wildly popular.

2048 was just annoying, the need to do tricks for speed and weird shield health gamble mechanic it's a mess. I wish they'd remove the combat part and make it like a racer with emphasis on the racing like forza but 2077 lol

Fond gaming memories. Wipeout was a classic game.

Sony lost me years ago. They dropped all of their unique franchises in favor for a bunch of dad simulators. Honestly, fuck sony.

Watching this in 2023, and I'm fearful that the PS5 will be the first Sony console to never have a WipEout title.

The PlayStation 5 generation is supposed to last until 2028 with a couple of years of cross gen support where the PlayStation 6 has a potential launch timeline, so its possible it will get revived

If I had a PS4 I'd get Wipeout Omega. If Omega was on PC, a lot of people would buy it with money sitting on the table.

I would love a new game but still LOOOVE the HD remaster Omega collection its boss as fk. If a new game actually came out I would be very excited to see it. It would be an instant sell for me.

I would love a new Wipeout game as a possible PS5 launch title. I do not believe that every single PlayStation exclusive needs to be a story driven 3rd Person Action Adventure games with stealth elements.

The VR mode is amazing. By far the best PSVR title in my opinion. It looks so damn good

Well it became the key to PS Vita hacking for a bit there and I think they even removed it off the PSN market for awhile because of that.

At least,I could enjoy wipEout Pure & Pulse in my PSP emulator (PPSSPP)
