I really hope these shoes do come back, because with this year being the 20th anniversary of Sonic Adventure 2, people are going to start playing this game again, and Soap is going to get noticed big time (I hope), and I really want a pair of these shoes when the time comes so that I'll be able to not only have fun but to be able to showcase how fun it can be if other people had them.

Nah, maybe create a new fast moving character that can move fast by sliding on their heels using ice powers or something. Personality wise, they could have a calm yet cocky demeanor, kinda like Shadow and Sonic's personalities combined, and since they can maintain their speed using ice, they could be kind of a show off by sliding on their heels backwards or spinning around with a grin similar to Sonic's cocky grin.

There actually was a pair of Soap shoes that were specifically marketed as the “Sonic” Soap shoe - The Scorcher. They looked different than most Soap shoes in the sense that they took styling cues from running shoes, whereas most Soaps took their styling cues from skate shoe style.

As true as that is, I do like his regular shoes. They have this classic feel to it. Now, if SEGA were to add character customization sort of like how they did for Colors Ultimate and Forces... Maybe we'd see Sonic wearing these bad boys again. It's just a thought.

⁠​⁠​⁠@@DaLazyRat yeah, but for those who can’t have mods on consoles, the only way for us to get soap shoes in Frontiers is Sega making an unlimited supply of DLC Soap Shoes in the game.

The way to get SOAP shoes to come back is to get a parkour team interested in them. Adding unexpected edge grinding to all that wall jumping and wall running would make that team really stand out.

Alright, here’s my take on it. The name may derive from the fact that you get to “slide” on rails, something soap is a bit notorious for being. It could also come from the fact that the grind plates have a bit of a soap bar-esque shape.

What's funny is, a really early promo image for Sonic Heroes featured him still wearing the 2G Hi-Speed Shoes (apparently the official name of that particular pair of shoes).

I'd actually really like for a future SA2 remake/remaster to have the ability to change to the original Sonic shoes as a bonus option

@@cookiesontoast9981 nah sonic fans as a whole are huge (most of the more general fans wouldn’t care) But the more serious/diehard ones would certainly complain the same way one does about his green eyes, quill length, sonic and santiago, hotdog vs pointed shoes etc I literally just got on KZread after seeing the sonic side of twitter genuinely being mad that frontiers is using the forces sonic model making his quills 0.3 centimeters taller or some shit and im not kidding I complain about that kinda small stuff too from time to time so i kinda get it. People could say thats a twitter thing; but i’ve been in this fandom for years, long before twitter was ever even thought of and can definitely say fans get mad over little things in literally any fandom, regardless of what the change was or why Remember the “blue arms” thing lol?

i actually never realized that in the beginning cutscene he didn’t have soap shoes

I literlly met my best friend of over 20 years due to soap shoes. I had just moved and started my freshman year, and I remember seeing him with a pair. Asked if he like sonic adventuer 2 and the rest is history, soap shoes literlly changed my life.

if we get remakes these shoes better be in the game!

Shadow's Air Shoes are basically high tech heelies when you think about it.

I can't believe a pair of shoes had made so many cry today. This is truly the best timeline.

Can confirm epic grinds are super fun, very fun to hit a grind at school then go to class

I remember back when I was in 3rd grade, one kid showed up with a pair of soaps and we all stared in amazement, it got to the point that most of our parents refused to buy us a pair so what we would do in the bathroom at school is take some of the hand soap and put that on our shoes so we could grind on this box platform that was to help the younger kids to stand at level with some of the urinals, boy the 90's were sure a trip.

This was very insightful for me. I didn’t know much about the adventure games so hearing about the history of the SOAP shoes was very cool.

Truth be told they should have kept those shoes over the original......I also found a pair online a couple of years back. They are insanely difficult to find now.

It's amazing to me that it took so long for SOAP to find it's obvious soulmate in Heelys. Like, you'd think they'd meet up in detention one day and just become best friends for life.

Lmao🤣 On a side note, heelys with a soap grind plate as well... like combined into the same shoe... that’s the dream team right there🤩 Go from grinding down a rail and straight onto wheels when you land off it to keep that momentum going. It would be so awesome... but also potentially deadly if you landed on a rail with the wheel part instead of the grind part since the wheel would just roll you off instead of you having that extra second or two to calculate how you’re going to save yourself if you had landed on the sole of your shoe with a regular soap shoe instead

5:39 "every point afterwards." Yeah.... no. In the Dreamcast version, the cutscene where Sonic boards the shuttle (Dark Story) he's rocking his regular shoes.

Over a year later, it is confirmed that the SOAP shoes will be free dlc in Sonic Frontiers. You have to sign up for a newsletter to get the code for it though

I actually own a few pairs of SOAP shoes, and I started getting into it around 2011, so it wasn't easy finding pairs, but some websites still sold them brand new. Unfortunately, a couple of pairs have gone missing somehow, I don't know if I threw them out accidently, or I left them at a skate park or something. One of the cool features of some of them was being able to replace the plastic grind plates if they got worn out, the problem though was that when I bought new plates, the rubber from the shoes were so worn down that the plastic would stick out, making it nearly impossible to walk from being all slippery. But yeah, I have an interesting history with SOAP shoes, and I definitely stood out in my school at the time, more so than usual being a weeb lol.

Sonic has SOAP. Shadow has Heelies. Silver has a busted up old pair of L.A. Lights that don't even work half the time. That's how you know he's from a bad future. Also, SOAP shoes seem like the most fun way to break your ankles

At least 1 of my friends as a kid had Soap shoes and yes on the playground it was pretty fun trying to grind on stuff. Didn't realize the shoes in Sonic were actually Soaps till years later.

Ngl, I was just sold on the idea that since Sonic got (or was portrayed as) older, his shoes would be enhanced for his crazier moves. Like with the other crazy posters, I thought SOAP was just another needless thing, but you've schooled me on that. ....And this is also coming from a poser from those inspirational years specifically. Looking back, it makes sense why so many of those bumpers were installed on edges like LEGO blocks back then. Thanks for the vid, and please keep up the great work!

Your video was very informative! I had no idea Soap shoes were real (or I just forgot lol), also the sound effects and music you included from the game made me so freaking nostalgic, I swear I was smiling the whole video haha

About ~15 years ago, I actually had a pair of Heelys with the Soap plate on them. They were pretty neat.

I wish they were in every game following SA2. They wouldn't even be out of place in black knight considering Lancelot has those magical jetshoes.(that are never explained by the way. I swear, that game is a nightmare between worldbuilding and the actual plot.)

Yeah good luck with that. The more videos that are made about them, the more people become new fans or them(or if they were *already* fans of them previously, their passion for them gets resparked) and more people go to hunt them down there’s only so many pairs left in the world. I’m quite worried about it myself, so I’ve decided to just make my own lol

Talking about Heelys took me back to 2004, really was a missed opportunity not to have that product placement in '06.

This is honestly why didn’t mind sonic riders much, like I remember people complaining that “sonic RUNS! He doesn’t need a hoverboard!” But like come on, you’re trying to tell me sonic wouldn’t use a hoverboard for fun?

6:11 Caught me so off guard because I was listening and not watching lmao Jokes aside, I absolutely adore the soap shoes. They just have such a hard edge look, and they are a thing of their own! As a game designer, the soap shoes are an inspiration to me. I often look to them when I’m designing shoes for my own characters!

Another little detail about the Soap branding on SA2 is that the advertisements only appear on the DC and GC versions of the game, on every remaster since then they are normal advertisements like Sonic Team, Sonic, etc

I feel like whenever people bring up Tony Hawk in relation to sonic grinding they forget that JSR exists and the grind mechanic is basically exactly the same as in JSR

I got to try Soap shoes at a minor league baseball game - so random. They had a truck with pairs of you shoes you could rent, like a bowling alley lol. Then I signed a waiver and got to grind on the array of rails they had. It was so cool and random. I eventually got a pair of Soap shoes. The late 90s man…

I remember my grandma took me to so many shoe stores just to find a pair, we never did and I was convinced they didnt actually exist.

I love the Arc on the bottom it just gives it more design then plain flat. Also since Sonic has become a success and becoming more relevant I can only hope as an anniversary they recreate them and sell them limited time. There is of course finding someone to customize one.

Fun fact: While "Soap Shoes" is the name largely used by fans, the actual, official name for Sonic's shoes is *Grind Shoes.* Japanese fans were surprised Western fans called them Soap Shoes went it was their turn to get them for the Frontiers DLC, since they've always called them Grind Shoes in Japan. Even S3 of Sonic X has concept art that uses the name "Grind Shoes". The wiki uses the name "2G Hi-Speed Shoes" but that's the title given to them due thanks to XBox Live Avatar cosmetics, so it's kinda dubious how "official" that name is. We basically assumed they were called "Soap Shoes" over here due to brand advertising all over SA2, but they've ALWAYS been called Grind Shoes. No mention of "Soap Shoes" in any official printed or digital media in the West whatsoever. But no matter what name you use, I love those shoes and it's a f*cking crime they didn't stay as Modern!Sonic's shoes.

I remember in elementary school a few kids had soaps and would grind the railings all over the playground. After a kid broke his arm, they were banned along with Pokémon cards.

Man, I remember when I had my pair of Soaps. They were heavy, but you could take the plates off with the key that came with them. I used to have one of their stickers on my bedroom door. I didn’t really use them though, except on sidewalk edges or an occasional low rail. I do remember when I stepped on a girl’s foot by accident with them at school, and she was wearing open sandals. I don’t remember if they got banned though.

I literally opened up a tab to Ebay and found Heelies with grind plates.Pretty sick. Since SA2B was my first real dive into Sonic games, I only ever want to see Sonic in SOAP shoes. Him wearing anything else feels wrong.

i don't know if i ever will since they're so rare and expensive now, but it's been a huge desire for me to own and wear a pair of soap shoes. i want to grind like my blue boi, it's at *least* number 5 on my bucket list

My problem is that Sonic leaned that hard into 90s rebel culture with soap shoes and heelies but they never actually tried to make Sonic control like a skateboard, Skate 3 is a perfect example of the kind of high-speed freedom I expect from Sonic
