USB-C is my favorite connector. I love the fact that it's reversible. Its small size makes one port type work on many difference of size devices. It's much more durable than ports like micro USB. It's such a versatile Port where it can be used for so many different things, I can't wait to see laptops that have 4 to 6 USB-C Thunderbolt ports on them and nothing else, so you can use those for ports for whatever you want... charge, transfer data, drive 4 external displays. When you have four ports on your laptop and they're all different types you are limited what you can do what those four ports. But my biggest problem with USB-C is their implementation of the c to c cable spec... every C to C cable should be exactly the same. It's hard enough for consumers to understand the differences in the USB-C ports on their devices, but they also have to understand that there are different types of USB C to C cables... some are just data cables and some support Thunderbolt and DisplayPort alt mode. It is an absolute frustrating mess for most consumers. Then us in IT or tech savvy people have to try to explain this mess to our friends, family, coworkers, or customers.

A "Top 5 slim programming keyboards" would be nice. I'm always on the look out for a nice slim keyboard for programming but they are difficult to find. Nearly all slim keyboards have a deal breaking flaw: - Fn key where a Ctrl should be (Mac, hint hint); - no dedicated media keys (us programmers need our function keys always accessible and pressing two buttons at the same time for play/pause is inefficient); - weird arrow keys, either too small or surrounded by page up/down; - clicky switches that increase the chance of office murder by 100% :); - weird placement of the right ctrl key in relation to the / key (ctrl + / is a frequently used shortcut to comment a line of code); I know of only two keyboards that satisfy some of this requirements but are kind of expensive and rare in certain regions. The Microsoft Surface Keyboard that i can't find in my country and the new Logitech MX Keys that also has illuminated keys, but it is impossible to find any Logitech keyboard with the US layout in the EU. The ThinkPad keyboard does not count because it is $300! :) Also, the person that invented the "US Intl" layout should be ashamed!

The only hassle is that you need to push a pin or such in the connector to loosen it. Not a big deal at all! In fact you're happy to do that since you know because of that you the cable is always connected with a connector like that, so you smile: oh yes, the good old XLR / RJ-45 connector.

Still running my iMac 27" from an external FW800 hard drive. It's plenty fast and I can daisy chain it with a multi-drive RAID and a Dock for bare drives. Yes I'd prefer an SSD in USB 3.2 but, what I've got works, is flexible and readily swapable and keeps my brilliant 8 year old Mac working like new. I do swap drives out from my Dell and Macbook Pro, but what a pain! Now that we have such fast externals it will be lovely to dump large cases with stacks of drives forever. I look forward to USB4 bringing down the cost of Thunderbolt yet again. It took a long time after Apple first add the first Thunderbolt ports but the features have lately finally matched the price. One thing is how are they going to mark the cables and ports so we can tell the difference? There will still be a vast practical difference between Thunderbolt and USB4, let's hope they don't make it "suck iot and see".

Mil spec Cannon Plugs are my favorite, but honestly the apple lightning cable is a genius bit of kit, no sharp edges, machined aluminum surfaces on the port and cable with pins on the outside, not the inside. Wiggling and gradual use just has no effect on the ports, which is important for a phone

USB4 should replace ALL cables and ports - HDMI, DVI, display port, SATA, VGA, Ethernet, speaker out, microphone in, PCI-E slots, RAM slots, and even power cables can all be replaced by USB4. There is no need to have a million different cables. Everything should be USB4.

The best connector are 1.Type C since they are reversible. 2. Type A they are more robust and less prone to be damage compare to micro-b 3. Type B are too fragile, I have so many cable with micro-b to mini-b connector that stop making contact that I had to wiggle and hold in place for it to connect. 4. The 3.5mm audio jack is the same as Type B after a while the connector is prone to damage and you have to fiddle with it to get a connection.

There is the thunderbolt 3 that has the same 40Gbps bandwidth as USB4 and it’s been out for a while, but there is hardly anything that can actually use that bandwidth. I had a Razer laptop in 2016 when their external graphics card enclosure called the Razer Core released. That thing used all that bandwidth and still needed more. It was pretty good ranging between 80-90% efficiency, but man it was expensive. $600 for the Razer Core not including a graphics card. At the time that laptop had the 970m in it so you needed a 980 or 980ti to get justifiably better performance than the internal laptop GPU. As time goes on though it’s nice being able to upgrade your GPU for a laptop with a 1080 TI although it is with the external dock only. If someone can make a reliable external graphics card enclosure for cheap I think it would be a better adopted idea. Besides an external GPU dock there is absolutely nothing out there that can use 40Gbps bandwidth. In fact there are few things that can even utilize the full speed of USB 2.0 and 3.0. Flash drives and external SSDs still can’t get anywhere near 5Gbps. The fastest standalone internal m.2 SSDs are between 3-4Gbps. Those SSDs need a PCIe interface which USB doesn’t support. USB-C is a good form factor, but it still hardly has been adopted. Apple made their 2016 MacBook Pros have 4 USB-C thunderbolt 3 ports. All my Apple loving co-workers have adapters for their mouse, keyboard, SD card, Ethernet port, HDMI out, etc. those things still can’t do anything without adapters. Here we are 4 years later and a typical mouse and keyboard still ships with a USB-A dongle. The rest of our technology needs to catch up to our current standards before we really need to worry about it.

Macs have had Thunderbolt 3 for years which allows easy connection of several high resolution monitors, docks, high speed RAIDs, eGPUs, daisychaining and charging devices. The extra capacity of Thunderbolt 3 means you can daisychain without penalty. It's PCs that hardly have anything. USB c male to USB 2 female adaptors are tiny and cheap, just permanently stick them on the end of drives/cables or in the ports. Most Macs use Bluetooth mice and keyboards so the port is irrelevant for those. I notice that PC users love to complain about this EXCEPT when they have to use dongles for WiFi, wireless mice, keyboards/trackpads, mikes etc because the manufacturers are too cheap to include them in their models.

Gonna be honest, not a fan boy by any means but.. apples lightning connector stays solid and doesnt break or create a looser connection after repeated use or accidental pulls.. i feel like this would be a fantastic connector as a usb 4+ even if it was a touch wider. It just “seats” really well in the socket. Also reversible... but less to go wrong.. love to hear others thought on this.

no it will not allow you to connect a ogpu to your computer using usb4 unless they change the design of the internal bus for usb(which might make it not backward compatible). the reason thunderbolt works is because of the level of the bus, it is the same as pcie, very close to the cpu unlike usb which use protocol that is different and connect to a controller first then to another controller then to the cpu.

I have ONE device with a USB C and outside of that device it’s of little use because hardly anything made has a USB C. Not even my 2019 car has USB C port. I suspect that USB4 will be adopted by a handful of devices (maybe 2) when it is obsoleted by USB5.

Well how many devices per port can USB4 support? USB2 can support 127 devices per port (using hubs, and each hub counts as a device). Now the most I have ever ran on one USB2 port was 17 devices at one. That was 13 flashdrives using 4 four port hubs.

I would stay the traditional USB type A is my favorite it just works as people are used to it now. Sure USB-C are nice being reversible and all but its small size makes it way too fragile for many of its use cases. Working as a tech in a big IT envoriment i have have had way to many USB-C computer docks and computers being RMA'd due to the connector on either the cord or computer braking quite fast.
