    Ok, I found it. I assumed, quality wise, this would be at least SNES standard so I started my search with Super Castlevania 4. It's "The Waterfall" but this one is a remix, isn't it? I love this version. Is this one of these cases, where you can only specifically find it on smw central? 😔 Because I hate that! 🤦‍♂️ Already had that Problem with Kappa Of The Ocean (a Mega Man water level remix, that I happen to adore). It was a nightmare to download and convert. But I have it as my alarm clock ringtone now....

    For the people wondering about the source of the music for the Ice Castle area, it is indeed from Castlevania 64, but it's Renon's (the shopkeeper's) theme, not Rose's theme. Didn't see anyone in chat mention this. Really wish this hack along with Subversion actually listed where they sourced music from, because both OSTs are great.

    Definitely an impressive rom hack. While it would have been cool to see different boss logic, that’s fine for a hack with all of the other work put into it. As a side note, Assembly isn’t inherently harder to learn than a higher level language, it’s just you have to really understand a chip architecture to really make good code. Depending on the chip you’re coding with, you can use a higher level language like C for things like If Then statements then use it’s assembly commands to better order things, but you would still take a performance hit. For sure we’ve gone beyond coding in assembly on a game development level, but plenty of micro controllers require assembly code to boot load certain things so it’s still used.

    This hack is absolutely wonderful and creative for what it does. I love the presentation on all points... from the title screen, to Junko herself, the tile sets, the boss reskins (I know it's 2D so not a "reskin", but I'm stuck for a definition... maybe re-pixled/over-pixeled/pixel swap...), the animations etc. The power ups are so damn fun and creative, and that brings me to the one single critique: The layout of the map does not capture and utilize what has been gifted to us. This hack is most certainly a solid 9 out of ten already. Simply so much talent both visually, creatively, and mechanically. It could/should be a 9.8 with some room editing to make use of those fun abilities and create flow. But hat's off and respect to this beautiful passion project. ❤❤❤

    in terms of automation, it would be a good thing if the workers actually benefited from it. if when something was automated we got hey, you now only have to work 4 hours per day because you do the same work in 4 hours. instead greater efficiency only benefits the owners because they can do the same job with fewer workers, or cutting hours w/out compensating pay.

    Answer is probably that super metroid means a lot to the dev and personally inspired them and/or they aren't super proficient in programming. Rom hacking is waaaaay easier than making a full custom game, and can involve no coding if you'd really like. Most of the mechanics in here are public resources

  • @philbert006

    @philbert006

    How many indie studios after developing and releasing games on a 30+ year old system, or at least designed to function on the hardware that was available at the time? How many times do you think they could put in the amount of work Nintendo did on these games back then, and release them to compete with top tier studios putting out insanity on hardware so advanced the people back then would have lost their shit, how many times could they do that and keep the lights on? Because they would have to start from scratch. The instant something like this, or any ROM hack based on a piece of Nintendo intellectual property or designed to run on their hardware made any kind of public announcement or earned enough revenue to buy lunch at Taco Bell, Nintendo would send a team of lawyers in a giant robot that looks like Bowser to stomp the indie dev and their property into bits before the lawyers climbed out with teams of support, unlimited backing, infinite money, and 0.0% of interest in giving a fuck about anything other than making sure that anyone involved would suffer for all eternity just out of hatefulness. Just look at how they treat their loyal customer base, their adoring fans, the people spending their hard earned money to ensure their success, the people trying to organize events that would only benefit Nintendo by exposing them to people that may possibly not know who they are or getting exposure for games that maybe got missed by whatever group, or just want to pay them a huge sum to use their game to play a tournament. What does Nintendo do there? Spend a fortune to take their ball and go home. There are much easier ways to make much more advanced games in way less time with way less effort and have zero risk of Nintendo ruining your universe. I suggest you delete your comment after reading this just so they don't come after you just for suggesting it, you don't deserve to lose it all over what should be a reasonable enough idea, if not an original one. Now you'll have to look over your shoulder forever

    @@philbert006 Nintendo would have nothing to do with them creating a new game. The point of my comment wasn't that they shouldn't make a hack. It was that they basically made a new game here that could have just as easily been a new indie game in terms of quality that we see here. It's a compliment to the hack creator. For those that can't see that is not really my concern.

    @@williammiller3621 You're definitely right about it being on par with a separate game in quality, but again, they did not "basically make a whole new game". They did level design and tons of art and such but almost no programming. In this manner they skip out on a huge part of game dev, which for all we know they can't do at all! Like, you see what I'm saying? Making a game is a lot of work and there are people who's entire jobs are just the programming side, it's tough

    Strange premise. "Saving the life of an entity and having to get rid of it because out of gratitude it imprisons you in a dream." That's a good script. The problem is that it traps you in a dream, and within that dream it gives you the resources to destroy it. WHY?! This is more like a psychopathic entity playing tag with the protagonist. About the graphics, the scenarios are awesome and some creatures are very good, but the protagonist seems to be in the wrong game.

    9 ай бұрын

    @@exister6652yeah, considering the massive team at Nintendo and the time they spent doing all the programming and coding and all the other things that went into making a whole new game 35 years ago. One person spending a year of their free time to create and implement new artwork, change up and add some music, and add in a couple of custom actions, and doing it with the benefit of not having to trailblaze any of it and certainly having access to hardware and software that was probably unfathomable back then. The only advantage the hack dev didn't likely have was unlimited money like Nintendo, but rather had to find the time while keeping their life going. Even with all those advantage, surely a lot of time and work went into the project, and that to say nothing of the obvious passion to even consider taking on something like that. There's an awful lot of gushing about a lot of these projects that I think omits the fact that most of them are basically just painting a castle that was built by someone else. The painter is great at his craft, perhaps the best, and deserves his accolades. But he isn't creating or transforming that castle, he's just whitewashing it and covering the true master craftsmanship with a palette that is more appealing to the current patrons.
