This street interview was conducted in Shanghai, China, and we want to thank all our interviewees for sharing their honest views. Obviously the opinions expressed in this video are those of individual interviewees alone and do not reflect the views of ASIAN BOSS or the general Chinese population, but that doesn’t mean they should get judged or ridiculed for speaking their mind. We want to cultivate an environment where people can have civilized discussions to bridge cultural gaps. As such, any personal name calling towards our interviewees will be deleted. I don't understand why Chinese don't consider themselves to have white skin, it seems very strange to me. Maybe I just have bad eyes but I can't see any difference between East Asia and European skin tones. The differences are facial features, not skin tone. I think in Spain we don't care so much about skin tone as in Northern Europe and East Asia, but if you are too pale people may say you look sickly.

Ask and Confront any Asians about their white worshiping. That's a stereotype they don't seem to know, because they don't know how stupid they look praising white people all the time, when many white people continue to take advantage of them and it feeds into that racist mentality that white are the superior race.

The idea of ordinary Chinese is that girls in Russia and Eastern Europe are the best girls in the world. The video has been made clear that white men are more stereoscopic and are very easy to show, and of course you can find that this is the rape of the Hollywood for the aesthetic of the world. Finally, I would like to emphasize that girls in Eastern Europe, girls in Ukraine, Russia and white Ross are best not to accept rebuttal.

Poor and misdirecting translation. They did not say better features at the first few questions, they said liti, which means more dimensional and pronounced, which is factual because asian features are flatter. They did not say western features are better. Please change your translator because I've been noticing bad translation for your videos esp the Chinese ones, and as an avid watcher of Asian Boss videos this is very disappointing, unless your aim is actually not to show authentic Chinese insights.

Chinese language isn’t about word for word translations, they speak in the context of the subject. When you say more pronounced features, doesn’t it mean better features? Since more pronounce nose means high bridged noses, more pronounced eyes means larger eyes. And that how chinese concept of good facial features.

  • @zachela

Federic Aujero i get what you mean but this is also a matter of preference and dimensional features doesn't mean better features for everyone as well. Imo, I appreciate some of the translations that are not word for word but an important point in this interview is whether they prefer western features and I'd think it is clearer if people who don't understand chinese are given the exact meaning. Like what the previous commenter said, theres a difference between saying X is X and X is better because Y

Wanting fair skin doesn't mean that they want to look like Western people. In fact, fair skin had always been a beauty standard, because in ancient times, having fairer skin means you aren't outside doing hard work under the sun (like farmers). So having fair skin made you look more "high class". This isnt the case anymore, but the concept of fair skin is so deeply rooted that people still consider it as an ideal.

A k, Yijun's comment is far from being "ignorant", he spoke the truth and if you actually had taken the time to read the comments of chinese people you'd know that the translation was a bit off, they didn't say that they feel ugly nor that white people are more attractive, they just mentioned the different features. Anyway it's a rude move to call someone ignorant when it's clearly far from the truth, you are just too angry for some reason, have some respect.

@A k mono eyelid for women is probably the only thing you named that make little sense here. People want fair skin, but they don't want White people's skin. they don't want flat nose, but they don't want White people's nose either. No one really have issue with black hair in China, some Korean did have this problem in early 2000. It is a super old fashion now. In a Chinese movie, if you see a Chinese man with blonde hair, it means one of these two 1. uneducated teenager migrant worker making minimal wage in the city. He could kill someone or be killed any minute tragically in the movie just to show how unfair the world is. 2. young kids into k-pop, usually have bad grade in school.

No, apologies if I expressed myself incorrectly. What I meant to say was that a lot of my Chinese friends are obsessed with white people and white skin and white facial features. This is not just my particular group of friends, but a pervasive feeling among a large fraction of china's youth - this has been studied at an academic level and a few theories have emerged as to why this is, mostly relating to the Cultural Revolution and the pre-1980s period where China was pretty much isolated from the rest of the world (in short, they say that Chinese were 'dazzled' by the western world once they learned about it, and this went as far as influencing people's beauty standards to try to match western beauty). This lady seems not only completely immune to those cultural constraints, but she's radiant, smiling, confident and has good advice to give. That's all.

WE have the same thing in reverse here in the US. Most Americans find Asian features attractive too. As an American who grew up partially in the South and never saw black people, when I first saw a black person I thought they were unattractive, but soon as I got to know some of them and saw more of their faces and features they are just different looking and often just as or more attractive than white people. it's educating people to have broader experience. Maybe we should pick people are random and move them around the world until everyone is mixed together and learns to appreciate each other. It is sad to see Chinese people or any people talk about another race being more attractive.

GUYS!!!The translation and her questions made this misunderstanding even bigger. Chinese' pursuit of brighter whiter skin has nothing to do with race! It's a beauty standard comes from ancient time when we didn't even know the existence or white people. Not sure why ancient chinese like jade-like skin. But for modern chinese girls, we know we have flatter face. Being a little brighter makes complements the gentleness of our smaller nose and eyes, being fair makes us feels not that flat and gives us more confidance. Fair skin makes us feels ourselves more girly, I guess due to ancient culture somehow as well. It's definately NOT about race. If chinese girls have more dimensional face that looks good with any skintone, nobody would cares about being brighter or not. We are always saying how sexy and healthy the dark skin foreign people look.

If you watch Taiwanese/Chinese dramas/films, you will see that their male actors do not use much cosmetics or BB cream or unrealistic kind of make-up just to look handsome. They're just simply handsome the way they are and are more natural or masculine compared to Korean stars.. By the way, I studied at a Chinese school in the Philippines and hell yeah there are a lot of cutesies everywhere even the ones who wear glasses. It's so rare to see cuties when you walk on some streets of Seoul.

We have a teacher shortage in NZ because of salary and the working conditions. Lots of people are leaving this profession because they feel undervalued. Wages are low in comparison to living costs which are high and that is not an appealing way to live. I've lived in Australia before and want to get out of my comfort zone and immerse myself in a different culture. Having international experience looks good on your resume as well. The knowledge I gain from working in China will help me teach Chinese children if/when I go back home, plus earning close to double will help me save quicker and pay off my student loan from studying. Is it so wrong to want to learn about a different culture?

OhHi Oh It's a well-known fact among expats in China that it often takes little more than a foreign face to be hired as an English teacher, regardless of qualifications. But foreign instructors in Chinese schools are facing increased scrutiny following revelations that a British man wanted in the UK in connection with the rape of a child and distribution of indecent images worked at a Beijing school. Neil Robinson, 47, turned himself in to Beijing police late last week. He taught at an international school in the capital for four years, according to China Daily, before resigning last year due to "personal reasons." This case was immediately followed by the discovery that an American convicted of child pornography offenses was working as an English teacher in Nanjing. The scandals prompted the State Administration of Foreign Experts to issue an "urgent notice" instructing local authorities to supervise foreign teachers' "daily activities," the South China Morning Post said.

I remember seeing somewhere that lighter/fairer skin was/is preferred in places like Europe and Asia because it meant that you didn't have to labor out in the sun all day. Thus suggesting an air of higher station, like nobility. That changed in more modern times with the idea of vacations and travel to tropical locals thus flipping the standard to mean that having tanned skin meant more free time and more status. Ultimately I think people should feel confident in their skin regardless of color.

We tried to ask people to stop in Chinese and with basic signs but no one would. I drew the line when my friend felt ill and started to cry and a woman tried to take a picture with her baby with us after being told to stop-that’s just cruel. I know this might not be for the whole of China but we went to Shanghai and felt very unwelcome. Every ethnicity has beauty! Update: I now realize (from other commenters) that the translations were misleading and they aren’t saying the think being Caucasian is prettier but just mentioning some features that fits their beauty standard. They mean like milky white skin not freckly pink white-person skin. I think healthy skin of any color is beautiful and you have to admit most Asians are very into skin health. This does make me a little grateful for America for having a much wider definition of beauty since we have a much more diverse population.

In the ancient times people with less education had to work outside. So their skin were tanned. And because those people were poor, and were relatively uneducated, Chinese related tanned skin to poor and uneducated class of people within OUR society. I think any sensible and educated Chinese will not regard common White men or Women handsome or pretty. We understand fully that likes of George Cloony and Rooney Mara can be found only in Hollywood but outside of it? We look so much better than them. Lol. We are not envious of whiteness with that of Caucasian, that is for sure. It is not gonna happen. Caucasians thinks too highly of themselves. Lol.

But i cannot tell her that because she will get mad and yell "i don't have tan skin, i have very pale skin". The "white skin" beauty standard is really deeply ingrained in most chinese..

It makes me so sad that some of them feel the need to use pills & lotions & potions to whiten their skin. I genuinely think they’re all so pretty... I wish they could love themselves more.
