This was my address at the 35th anniversary meeting of Atheist United on Sept 24th 2017. It was held in the Griffith Park Visitor's Center, because their usual venue, the famous Steve Allen Theater on Hollywood Blvd had just been sold and was no longer available.

Many thanks to Bobbi Kirkhart who hosted us at Heretic House.

You've got to admit that whoever came up with the Jesus story had a sense of comic irony, though... I mean, the character's a carpenter and he's defeated by being nailed to some planks of wood, i.e. death by carpentry.

I used to be an attendant at a museum. I asked a visitor if they were interested in seeing an exhibit of the Dead Sea Scrolls. They told me, "I'm only interested in the real bible."

My mother also denies that the Bible says the disgusting things it does. She also says "it doesn't say that" after I show her that it does "you're misinterpreting it".

Apologists act like lawyers, because you need the mindset of a lawyer to defend the bible. A lawyer's job isn't to get the truth, merely to convince a jury that he has it. The job of the scientist is to actually find out what is true.

To AronRa: Ever thought of actually writing the book that a responsible god would actually write, together with side-notes comparing its contents comprehensively to the inferior content of the Bible? This could be a brilliant teaching aid, and something very difficult for Christians to argue against.

I was raised Christian and I’m glad iv discovered you on KZread. As I study physics at college I have inevitably had to face all of the things you just mentioned, and more. At first I was scared to admit to myself that I was losing faith to reason, but listening to you along with others in your field and my own professors has given me more confidence. Thank you.

People 6,000 years ago weren't stupid; they were ignorant. Given proper knowledge they would be on equal footing with us. No baby knows calculus when they are born, but all they need is a good teacher, and they could learn it before they are 20 years old. A book could be that good a teacher. That book could also teach a language that would remain in use. Once everyone reads, language change gets slow. Especially if it contains a glossary.

The Bible should have the standard front page warning telling you that it's a work of fiction.

As a child of 12 I joined a bible study group through the Pentacostal church. I was told to ask anything I had a question about. I was asked to leave the group for asking too many questions.

My favorite all time stupidism said to me in sincerity, as child, when I asked how can we tell Moses and Saul were talking to God and Not the Devil, was this answer, "You shouldn't ask questions like that. "

"Yep, the bible is literal fact"... "what about Jesus saying you have to hate your family or you're not worthy of him"... "Yeah, but you don't take the bible literally, it has to be interpreted"... "wouldn't god give clear concise instructions?"..."yep, the bible is literal fact"...

I wouldn't mind seeing Jesus as a superhero in the MCU. He'd have to be a supporting character though, turning water into wine would be very popular at parties, but wouldn't help with fighting bad guys. When the government declares the Avengers as enemies of the state, superhero Jesus could take the fall for them.
