What Thailand Hospitals Are REALLY Like

Join me for a Hospital Tour in Bangkok and I'll give you the news on what's going on. I will give you an overview of the Bumrungrad Hospital, one of the more popular options for Medical Tourism in Thailand, providing world class healthcare at reasonable prices.
Yes there are much cheaper (and very good) options for visiting doctors in Bangkok and across Thailand, but this video introduces you to a premier option that does cost more but is still quite affordable.
Bumrungrad Hospital provides ease of use that is tough to match, offering you the ability to get world class health care with English speaking doctors and nurses. There's also Thai Food for lunch.

Quick question! From one of your old videos you mentioned about the health insurance. Nomad(safety wing) with recently moving to Bangkok with my wife and 2 kids I went online straight away. Seems like a good insurance but it doesn’t cover heart/cancer/strokes. Can you recommend any other insurances for a family. Cheers Andy Glad your ok too 👍

Last year, I underwent the same checkup at Bangkok Hospital Pattaya, including a dermatologist visit. I didn't have any symptoms, but the dermatologist advised taking a biopsy from one mole. I did so, and it turned out to be skin cancer melanoma. Thankfully, it was in the first stage, and they promptly removed it, so I don't need any further treatment. The doctors in Russia failed to identify it. If I hadn't done this checkup, my chances of survival would have been slim, as melanoma is one of the most aggressive types of cancer. Great medicine in Thailand.

I hope your doctor scheduled you for semiannual return visits to closely examine all of your skin to make sure another melanoma does not occur. Apparently, if you have one your chances of getting another are increased. I had the same thing happen to me and was surprised at how much tissue they removed for a rather tiny spec on my back. I still go back once a year for a head to toe skin inspection by my dermatologist.

As a Thai who is now a medical staff in the US hospital. I can tell how lack of caring the western doctors can be due to because of HIPAA restrictions and the risk of EVERYTHING. Insurance premiums decides who lives and who cannot. It’s sad when I thought the US supposed to be the leader in this field as a first world country, but no matter how advanced the country is, it’s nothing worthy if they cannot even put that techs into use.

I am Thai but I live in Germany now. I can now compare and say out loud that medical service is Thailand is one of the best (if you get it from private hospitals). Doctors are well-trained. Nurses are kind and sympathetic. The cost is much cheaper compared to what you get. Leading hospitals like the one in the clip invest in new technologies regulary as well. I really miss how fast I can access to medical treatments. In Germany, it takes me weeks or months for any treatment. The saddest part is that I am paying here more than what I paid in Thailand for this lower quality..

Bumrungrad has enormous significance for my family. I lived in Bangkok for 5 years from 2001 and it was our go-to medical centre. My wife fell pregnant during this time and gave birth to our twins there, now, almost 21 years later we are soon to return to Thailand for our first visit in many years, with our soon-to-be 21 year old twins tagging along. I can’t begin to explain the memories and emotions stirred up by this video, suffice to say that we are so excited to be heading back there. I share this guy’s love for Thailand and its people, and also hope for nothing but the best for this amazing country. Oh, and I also took the big medical check-up every year at Bumrungrad! That tread-mill is seriously scary…

I am a Thai and I am heading there in a few years for my retirement. The Bangkok Hospital is there on the Main Street. And I myself is a practitioner in vibrational therapy (Rife frequency and Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy). Currently have an office in Bangkok and will be moving my office down to Hua Hin. Getting your feet in the sand and having a good swim in the morning at sunrise are exceptionally good feeling.

I had the physical done there. “ Head to toe in a half a day”. They found the very beginning of bladder cancer. I brought the info back home and it was confirmed. Removal was done right away. No problems since. They very likely saved my life. I remember that the baht was about 45 to the US dollar, so at that time, the testing was about 300 bucks. I would recommend it to everyone My US doctor was amazed at the amount of blood work they did. He said there were a number of blood tests that each would cost more than the whole physical if I had them done at home. I chose a 7 am appointment, was done and had lunch around 12 noon, then sat with the doctor to go over everything. Was out by 1:30

The hospital referred me to their urology department (seen in 20 minutes!) and 3 days later they had grown a culture and identified I had an e coli infection which if it remained untreated could have been quite serious. I went to Bumrungrad last January for a cardiology check. The doctor was a Captain in the Thai navy. Among other checks they did a heart ultrasound and then compared it to an ultrasound made after I had been through a stress ECG. The doctor could observe this in his office. He came in with an image from the original ultrasound and showed me how both were identical. One of the things I find impressive is that they get immediate lab results for cholesterol, blood sugar etc. Chris, one essential thing you need to do once a year, as a guy over 50, is get a urology exam to screen for prostate cancer.

Bumrungrad Hospital has always been a topnotch hospital with the latest equipment. I've been there for exams years ago and was always impressed with the high level of professional services provided there. Making an appointment online made getting in quick and easy, and avoiding long lines. I saw a neurologist and had an MRI scan done faster and far cheaper than having it done in the US. As it turned out, I had to be in Thailand anyway. I've also had a stress test done (in the US) at a heart center. Instead of a treadmill, I was given was a chemical stress test. As I understand, the stress tests are to simulate having a heart attack. It felt like having a full-grown elephant sit on my chest. I thought my heart was going to explode and was very glad when it was all over. The end result was that my heart was very strong and healthy.

The latest equipment is NOT what makes a hospital good; it is what the staff can do with it. You can give a bad cook the best ingredients but his/her meals will always be poor to mediocre. A good cook does not need top-quality ingredients to make a good meal.

The hospital and staff have top rated international accreditation. They are highly trained and skilled to use the equipment they have. That's not to say there aren't other excellent hospitals in Bangkok or elsewhere in Thailand. There are. I usually do a similar thing in India (which is also pretty well known for Medical Tourism). This hospital truly looks amazing and I will try is perhaps some time in the future. I wish they had such checkup packages for a reasonable price here in the United States, it would really improve healthcare outcomes.

That was a great video in the sense that they so kindly allowed you to video. Some Bangkok hospitals are just amazing and beautiful and *expensive*😢 I've been to 4 Bangkok hospitals that i remember. My favourite is the cheap acupuncture wing in Hua Chiew Chinese hospital in Bobae. Been so many times and they really helped me. Also got my check ups done at one of the most expensive Samitivej Srinakarin. Like you I was so happy to get to the canteen and took many photos of my yummy fruits and salad. But when they handed me the bill i paid then took the elevator to the prayer room to recover the shock of how much i paid 😂 I stayed near Bumrangrad more recently but didn't enter because i couldn't afford to. It's really beautiful in your video. Good to hear your health is mostly great 👍

I had surgery in a phuket hospital ( piac ) about 8 years ago qnd l could'nt fault a thing .. the doctors , nurses , admin were all attentive and first class ... everything was sqeaky clean ... the attention i recieved was so overwhelmingly professional it left me thinking we here in australia could learn alot ... l have no hesitation in recommending the hospital to anyone contemplating surgery ...

Retired expat from the US living jn Thailand five years. Now livjng in Trang, near Krabi. Recently had a physical here at Wattapat Hospital. Beautiful hospital. First rate. Similar to your tests, maybe a couple less. No treadmill, not needed. Cost a small fraction of yours. Don't need Bangkok prices. Got a great checkup for a fraction of the cost here. Plenty of good Healthcare options in Thailand.

Great you recorded this. I did the same thing at Samitivej Hospital . I think they covered the same stuff, I added a skin test. They also did a dental check up. I hate to think what would of happened if I had not done this. They told me there was something wrong with my heart, and my bladder, I had no symptoms I felt fine. My cardiologist rushed me to the hospital for an emergency stint procedure, all three of my main arteries were block, the LAD (widow maker) was 99% blocked the other were 85 and 70 My Urologist found a tumor in my bladder, its cancer, small and low grade but if left alone it would penetrate my bladder wall and I would have to have my bladder removed. SO I would say this check up saved my life. The total cost with the skin exam was USD 700.00 do it. I plan on doing this every year.

My experience of Thai hospitals is a mix. Town government hospital not really interested in a farang the emergency room curtains had old dried blood on them and very “grumpy” attitude Local village medical center was excellent, caring, helpful and informative Bangkok hospital in Chiang Mai was fantastic and obviously a lot more expensive than the government hospitals The essential thing you NEED is good medical insurance or deep pockets as without it you are basically stuffed Good vlog and as usual informative 👍🏼

Your experience here is far, far beyond night and day to what's happening now in the USA. I recently had my 5th colonoscopy due to my being high risk for colon cancer (my Grandmother died of it). Even though I'm high risk, I had to wait 7 months for the procedure. Even worse, it took almost 4 months for my 'follow-up' visit, in which I found out I now have diverticulosis, as well as the fact that the polyp they removed was an adenoma (I was told I was 'lucky' because it most certainly would have grown into a cancerous tumor). So yeah,, get that colonoscopy, it's no big deal. I guess the only real question for most of us is, how much did it cost you?

Bumrungrad is the most expensive hospital in Thailand. It was acquired by Arabs years ago and they renovated the hospital and made price adjustments to target westerners. You are basically paying low-end USA prices. Their surgeries cost more than top USA university hospitals. Even this comprehensive test should be no more than $1-200 more in the west. And forget Samitejiv as well, they are the second most expensive. If you came to Thailand just to get lower cost treatments, I suggest Bangkok Hospital.

Well Chris, that was very generous of you to allow us in. What a great video. I am sure this will serve as a strong encouragement and hopefully save a life or two. Well done to you and your camera man/woman/ Adam. What I was surprised to see was your ignorance ( Not trying to be mean) to the colonoscopy screening. Here in the states it seems to inbred into every man to have that screening minimun at 50 yr. old. Most get it while it seems a small percentage delay it. But if you urged to get the test, I will say that the prep is worse than the actual procedure BY FAR. Good luck, god bless and ty again for allowing us a look into the wonderful medical folks at Bumrungrad hospital. Cheers. Your the best.$855/US Is well worth it.

Thanks Chris, welcome to old age. Get the colonoscopy. Almost everyone has polyps that can turn cancerous. Also, go to the cardiologist and get an echocardiogram. Last week out of nowhere I had Afib for 24 hours in Kuala Lumpur. Stayed in the hospital for 1 night. Nothing wrong with the heart. The echo Cardiogram confirmed it. So you never know when this stuff happens. Good luck on your health journey. Oh, get an Apple Watch. That is how I found that Afib had started.
