What Tank Combat Sounds Like

Ойындар

Tank games usually don't have the greatest sound effects, especially when it comes to crew voices, but Gunner HEAT PC flips that paradigm on its head. The sounds in GHPC are absolutely fantastic, especially the crew voice lines. It's kinda scary how realistic they are, and how they managed to get tank fire commands down-pat. Check the game out and give the team some support.

As a former soldier in the British Army who served in the KRH (Kings Royal Hussars) as a tankey, theses voice lines in GHPC are authentic enough to give me chills from my time during training excises. Fantastic job they have done with the American crews, hopefully they model the voices for British tank crews. Great Vid Spook keep it up! Edit the extra thing they could add for authenticity is ANR (Active noise reduction) For the gunner site, which is played through the crew headsets to reduce hearing damage while operating a CR2. Would be a fantastic touch on top of an already awesome game.

I agree, was a US tanker and it gave me chills as well. Seriously, this looks like one of our simulators was put in a video game and I love it. And the voices are super close with how it might actually be, but i think they could really get closer if they can get some real recordings. Also, the "Up!" Of the loader is usually heard as background noise in the tank because their mics are a bit out of the way most the time and they are told to really yell it so it's clear that it was announced. Like you can tell the gunner is yelling 8n the background but his mic picks it up at a lower volume but keeps the tone and everything else.

Small correction: the TC saying “doubtful” is a type of sensing. Look up the acronym DLOST. He’s telling the gunner where his round landed relative to the target. If the round impact isn’t observable, “doubtful” is used. “Target” would be an observed hit, and then a subsequent command of “reengage” or “ceasefire” would determine what the gunner does next. Great video, love this game so much.

I was about to say that as more or less a layman I took issue with "doubtful" being used in the sense that Spook claims it is used in really meaning what he says it means. I'm also curious... is the callout "ceasefire" when a unit is knocked out always 100% accurate in the game? I would imagine that, sometimes, this won't be accurate. A vehicle could be prematurely ID'd as done for when, seconds or minutes later, it starts moving again, to everyone's horror.

  • @chaos2876

Correction to this, you're referring to the "Lost" part of DLOST. "Doubtful" means the round missed the target to the left or right, "Lost" is used when the commander doesn't observe the impact.

The voices are just as illegible as they should be. My absolute favourite during the maneouvers is, when someone gets excited/stressed enough to drop radio discipline and starts screaming casually, in long sentences, into the mike. Thing is, you don't scream, you talk laconic, and you use radio voice, punctuating words separately. I'm on Sordin Supreme CC and even they don't manage well with excited screaming.

We're playing a dedicated tank crew in Post Scriptum and i'm guessing that's as realistic as it gets since it's us who are panicked screaming when a tank is spotted and is looking at us. Especially if we are in a long range duel, commander screams "Hit again, AGAIN!", or things like; "NO NO HIT THE TURRET YOU ARE BOUNCING" especially if you come across a Tiger in an Armored car.. i am the driver and i feel my hands shaking in some situations. Trying to avoid the fire, listening to commanders screams "DRIVE DRIVE HE'S LOOKING AT US" and when you get a kill shot we're like "HELL YEAAAH"

I had a moment like this in Squad as a crew of a Bradley, having one guy as Commander, one Gunner then, me as Driver. Listening out for the commanders orders, executing them and acting as a Secondary Spotter, screaming whenever enemy infantry got close to us or a tank/apc was able to sneak up to us. We somehow managed to survive an entire round without losing the Bradley once meanwhile repeatedly killing the enemy armour and light vics from Ambush cause we were able to position and spot well. But the moments where we would be repositioning and caught out by enemy AT was exhilerating, especially jumping out as the Driver to repair the broken track so we can get moving again meanwhile the Gunner is letting lose with the Bushmaster and the Commander hoped out to provide cover.

The commands sound good, I served on a m1a2 Abrams for a few years. Some things I seen from the vid the made me question one command "gunner heat tank" that would pretty much never happen unless you're out of sabot. Or I'd see he had to lead with the cross hair which also never happened since the LRF would laze it then keep it's distance and so instead of leading a target moving at something going 20mph you just keep aiming center mass and the ballistic computer would do the rest and if you're bore sighted with your gun correctly you should hit exactly dead on. Other than that great video

I remember reading from a WW2 account is that while there is, for some people, excitement or thrill of combat and people can often be proud of their performance after fact, in the moment nobody wants to be in the thing and the last thing you wanted to see as a tank commander is another enemy tank. Doesn't matter what make or model, the moment you see an enemy tank every second is vital and a mistake will kill you. Hard to imagine.

I think the reason War Thunder and the like's voices aren't this realistic is that it creates confronting gameplay. Being screamed at by your crew would turn a lot of people off, so they're toned down, more relaxed. As much as I do think it's really cool GHPC is going that extra step, I can fully understand why more unrealistic games like War Thunder (yes, even in RB or sim it's not that realistic) haven't opted to go down this route. GHPC is shaping up to succeed in its goal, which is great. I'm quite keen to see how it progresses, and see how they'll implement multiplayer.

That may, your loader won't say the same line the same way all day long. And for tanks that never had built in crew coms, make them scream it, along with some echo. I coded a game much like this but didn't release it, and I really love the attention to detail here. I only had world of tanks crew voices to work with for hit effects but it got pretty contextual and it was a lot of work but eventually I had crew members in 7 languages yelling at me about reloads, hits, bounces, crew losses and vehicles states; but never with the modulating intensity with how close an enemy is to shooting you; that was an amazing touch and the driver comments go above and beyond. I'm happy to see something akin to my old passion project done even better, albiet with a few less swarms of alien monsters and rts elements. oh, what I would give to see the concept of cold war era mechanized warfare directed against an apocalyptic invasion of car sized, city devouring alien flesh monsters ;_; it's oddly specific but every time I see a game like this I imagine how fun it would play to gun down hordes of horrific creatures with a well coordinated mechanized platoon, in a hybrid of tank sim and real time strategy. with that sound design? it would be a horrifying and exhilarating spectacle.

Your private GHPC voice sound mod for WT is awesome, please ask the developer if you could release it publicly. It could make more WT players fund GHPC.
