What suffering from earworms sounds like

Ойындар

I describe myself as "suffering" from earworms. Here's a short example of what that sounds like.

As soon as she started with the "ring, ring, ring" bit, I mentally sidestepped right into an internal attack of Bananaphoneosis.

I actually get this a lot! A song gets stuck in my head and it takes a while to go away... I find distractions like video games help..

I ususally get these kinds of "stuck loops" only when I'm sick and/or running a (higher) fever. Then my brain does this when I try to sleep, and it will also be there when I wake up (multiple times each night usually). But it gets better after being awake through the day, so it usually only lasts over the night (which is bad enough because even without an earworm it's hard enough to get some decent sleep when you're running a fever...) Also, I wasn't aware that these were called "earworms" in English too, I only know that word from German 😀

this used to happen to me all the time... i've found the solution is to blast white noise at a loud level, or death metal with lots of growling/screaming and unintelligable lyrics.... both seem to reset the part of my brain that keeps a song stuck on loop.

I've heard that an earworm is actually your brain trying to complete the song, so it gets stuck on the part just before the part it can't fill in. Ironically the best way to cure them may be to listen to the songs in question a few times. I've got Mr. Telephone Man by New Edition stuck in my head right now, but it's the same part of the song, an instrumental part. I'm going to try to listen to it and see if that helps.

I tried that strategy once and it ended in disaster (days on repeat). Someone else told me singing the song helps, again, I found it to have the opposite effect.

@@JimLeonard Actually since I wrote that, I forgot to try it for myself. Now that you say it can have the opposite effect, I'd better not try it. I have a new song in my head now though, the Munsters theme.

Hard relate on this one. The worst one for me was the chorus of 'Let's Hear It for the Boy' by Deniece Williams. Two or three long weeks I had that stuck in my head.

What about playing other music on your stereo, does'nt that "force" your brain to focus on the music instead ? Try to imagine the sound/melody of a song you know well, while listening to another song on a stereo. It's nearly impossible, at least in my brain... Probably because the part of your brain that memorizes music is occupied processing the current incoming stream of music from your ears...

Listening to other music sometimes helps mask it in the moment. But it comes back when there's no music playing.

@@JimLeonard What about putting not just other random music, but a selection of "catchy" melodies, maybe one of those will stick and take the space of your earworm, but, it will be better as you can choose something a bit more bearable to become your new earworm ;) or try to change it every few days :)
