    It's not lazy writing. The movie isn't about what caused the war. It's about journalism, mostly. It's character driven, not about the politics. They literally have a character turn to camera and state that it doesn't matter what side you're on when you're trying to kill each other. Did you miss that?

    Gotta admit, I like how they aligned Texas and California. The President stayed on for a 3rd term and disbanded the FBI, so California is out. Then he likely revoked the 2nd Amendment along with the rest of the Constitution, and Texas followed suit. The film tells of how the 1st Amendment doesn’t exist anymore so it’s fair to assume none of them do now. And then the old “the enemy of my enemy is my friend” likely happened so they joined forces.

  • @Commodore22345

    @Commodore22345

    When they said the 1st Amendment doesn't exist anymore, they were likely just referring to how many rights get suspended during times of war or other national emergencies. It doesn't necessarily mean the Constitution was officially done away with.

Nobody, I know would give us a single solitary fuck. I have never called them. I guarantee you I never will. We handle our own shit here. Personally, I think people could learn to be more self-reliant. Sure public buildings having security I would understand, especially in big cities. However we got rid of our city police years ago. We just have a sheriff with like two deputies to cover a county nearly the size of Rhode Island and they barely ever leave the station. There is an old story my father used to tell us about a methhead who broke into a farmer's house one night... nobody ever heard from or saw him this town delinquent again. However, they do say the next spring when the farmer fertilized the fields... it seemed to be thicker than usual... and it had an awful smell to it... who knows. Nobody was going to start asking questions.

    @@HabibFromTelAviv For the final cut that was in theatres? I know they did. I watched all the trailers and was expecting one thing. Many of the more political scenes in the trailers that insinuated what the war was about were never in the movie when I saw it in theatres. It made the movie entirely different from what was advertised really. I think it would be a whole different movie without those scenes cut, so I’d say they were important ones. But unlike most movies where they cut scenes to shave time or make the plot make more sense, they cut these ones I believe not due to lack of importance, but because of the backlash received after they released the trailer that the movie may be too biased toward one side of the political aisle. So I think even the filmmakers were aware of the importance of those scenese and how it could change the movie, just wanted more viewers from both parties and less political controversy.

Also there are a lot of military bases and equipment in California… could be possible that people rose up and took over their military and people who sides with the feds fled the state…

    What was the message of the movie? I've been to war a few times and their portrayal of the "effects of war" was pretty fucking disrespectful. The use of wartime correspondents to do it was also a terrible move, as anyone who has gone to fight in war has a pretty universal hatred of journalists in warzones. If there was a message, it was squandered by terrible plot development, horrible inaccuracies, and extreme mischaracterizations of soldiers and combatants on the battlefield. The whole thing felt like it was written by a 12 year-old whose only idea of war has come from a public school classroom.

Yet, the magatards say that it's muh biased because of how the movie portrays journalists favorably, or how the president is white and in office for three terms (something trump wants). They’re both socialist and they’re both antisemitic, albeit the Nazis more so than the Soviets, and the Soviets were anti-religion in totality. But the real point of California and Texas being aligned is first to remove us from our current highly partisan mindset, and second to suggest that there are values a country should nevertheless come together on despite our other differences. If we think that there are not bigger issues that we should be aligned on no matter what - like the preservation of democracy in the face of fascism - then we have real problems. It's an attempt to hold a mirror up to our own society. The fact that we're all so incredulous about the idea of Texas and California coming together for any reason is an indictment of us.

    And many people were uncomfortable with that, causing his VP turned President Harry Truman to quickly pass the presidential term limit in the constitution. But during FDR's presidency there was no 22nd Amendment, so it was technically legal, and "two terms" was just convention and an unwritten rule people followed. Also it was during world war 2 so you have to consider that. Obviously today, if Trump were to rig the courts and the justice system to allow him to stay in office for a third term, then people would actually rebel and have just cause to do so.

    It was definitely a different way to do the movie, but I personally loved it. Politics and the “why” wasn’t the focus or even discussed. We start while it’s happening and follow reporters till it ends. The filmmaker even said he didn’t want to focus on politics, just how fucked up a real civil war is. For that, he nailed it perfectly and it was both dystopian and frightening to see

    I feel like what’s even more overlooked was that he was responsible for shutting down the water supply to the people of NY as well. Now, at first I believed it was mainly due to the western forces, but first of all, why would the western forces target New York if their main objective was Washington DC, and why would they intentionally hurt civilians and noncombatants? It was also stated the president utilized AIRSTRIKES on PROTESTERS beforehand, which, was a key example in the beginning scene. Because those jets were not the western forces, but the “United states’”. All in all, there are a lot of reasons why the two states seceded, although you REALLY gotta look close to the details. Like how, no allied country of the US tried assisting the president. You also have to note that if California and Texas join in arms together, they hate the president so much that they see it necessary to work together. Also also, I noticed (my dad noticed) that during the final battle in Washington D.C., there was a soldier of the Delta force, which was signified on his helmet. Now, if one of, if not THE most tactical operation group in the military is rebelling against the presidency, then it’s no wonder why there’s a whole civil war. (Not to mention the enormous gas prices) Side note: not every soldier is WF affiliated or US affiliated. The (racist) soldiers dumping the bodies of minorities were rogues, as well as the snipers. It just goes to show how there are those who are neutral, and how they can either just be surviving, or doing whatever the hell they want. And if the “what kind of American” guy was a western force soldier, then I would speculate he wouldn’t be too ecstatic that a BLACK WOMAN was the one to put down the president. All in all, fantastic film that plays a message in multiple different aspects. This is the kind of “shock and awe” more people need to see nowadays.

    Boston to Washington is all within a 5 hour commute to one another, so realistically if you were to try to strike at one of the cities you'd wanna disrupt flow of traffic and goods between the other's, otherwise there is just too many resources flowing in to assist them. All the cities in the Boston-Washington chain are in a Megalopolis, it isn't really sound to think of them as isolated areas. On top of that it likely was a straight up lie. In the beginning of the movie the President is making a speech about military gains being made, meanwhile immediately after that is said there is an air strike right near the main character's hotel which is deep in Union territory at the time. Then they hit the highway in PA, also supposed to be in deep Union territory, and it had been entirely decimated militarily speaking. So clearly the USA had devolved to severe authoritarian rule at this point in the war and were just straight up lying with propaganda to the people. The characters make analogies to rulers like Saddam who overestimated their populaces loyalty etc. and I think the point here is that this president had truly reached that point. It is very likely that the USA had very little control over a lot of the territories they claimed were probably at the point of having control solely over the northeastern corridor where the historic seat of the federal government has always been. So the water going off very well may have been because of the war and they were propagandizing it so as to not appear like they were losing. We know there are at least 15 states that officially declared secession and 2 major alliances of those seceded states are engaged in a war with the federal government(the Florida Alliance and the Western Forces). The characters in the film, Sammy in particular, makes a lot of analogies to the race to Berlin with the current situation, and that this is very much an "an enemy of my enemy is my friend" situation and he says in the film "as soon as they are done with him they'll tear each other apart". Joel also briefly mentions "Portland Maoists" and we can see them embed with an unmarked Boogaloo boys aesthetic armed group fighting union forces. In fact, no group they run into besides the WF at the end and Union forces being killed is ever really identified or willingly identifies themselves. So I think your assumption of their being way more factions would be 100% accurate, and in fact IMO was a large point in the movie in trying to paint the ethical and moral questions around war time journalism. The Syrian civil war that has been going on is a great example of this in real life. That war has hundreds of factions all working together in very loose coalitions that shift quite often depending on the current political climate, all trying to depose Assad. For journalists it becomes pretty hazy pretty quickly on the ground in terms of who they are actually embedded with. There have been cases where they think they are with democratic forces and in turn come to find out they were with an Islamist group etc. So this fog of war in the movie is relatively accurate.

    @@cassu6 most people commenting on the movie likely haven't actually seen it. This movie just came out at a really bad time, America is too hyper politicized atm and "civil war" has been a buzzword here for a minute. You have to keep in mind politics in the US have become WWE tier in terms of spectacle and dialogue, if you throw the words "civil war" out there you are begging to attract midwit brain rot tier commentary. Everyone I know who has actually seen it really has enjoyed it regardless of their personal political ilk. Brain rot mfs just cannot get out of the context of current American politics in regard to anything, and will always find a way to make analogies or try and fit it into conversation, this one is just a really easy target for obvious reasons.
