What size of wheels should I choose for city skating? Advantages of big and smaller wheels

boosty.to/nikzvi what size of the wheels for Inline skating should a newbie choose? what is better for a beginner?
what are advantages and disadvantages of big wheels and which wheels are more universal. What wheels are better for city skating? what wheels are more universal, good for slalom and downhill?
all of these questions we will discuss today.
Size doesn't really matter the skill that is what crucial. I'm usually very cautious talking about the speed of big wheels. yes they are faster, the wheels are faster because it's a simple physics, but that doesn't really mean that the skater on big wheels will be faster, than the skater on the 80 mm. a lot depends on skills not on the generic skills but on skills in skating big wheels. this things are rather cumbersome they are like skis very stable and not that agile. it's difficult to turn on them, it's difficult to control the edge properly it gives a lot of loads on the ankles during the jumps and it actually requires you to move a little bit different from there 80 mm skates. and for the purposes of city skating it can become very crucial. you know city skating is full of stops full of turns full of breaking. and this things they are moving pretty fast they're getting to the highest speed pretty fast and and if you need to stop immediately it will be more difficult on them. so even if you are getting more speeds while simply cruising when you have to use more maneuverable more tricky skating they can give some problems to you.
80 MM wheels much more Universal. they are agile and stable at the same time they could be used almost in any inline skating discipline. probably you won't be able to use 125 mm or even 110 mm for slalom but 80 mm is great for learning slalom tricks. they are good at simple flat skating and they're pretty reliable during down hills especially if they are not rockered and they are good for any jumps and other tricks. if you are only learning to skate on inline skates 80 mm should be your first choice. But of course you will need more footwork more initial strides to get to the highest speed. with 125 a few good pushes is the only thing that you need to feel the real speed to feel how the wind is rushing into your face and starts singing songs through your nostrils. If you want to skate some grounds or grassy down hills 125 should be your choice also. they are more stable on those surfaces. But if you want to skate stairs choose 80 mm this big gaps between the wheels will make it very tricky.
talking about myself: yes I still prefer bigger wheels maybe because I have the longer Leggs. maybe because of the feeling of a ro and maybe just because I like big wheels and I don't lie you other brothers can't deny...

Yeah Finally received my Twister! First time i have a boot true to size (42,5 usually i use 43) so much control! no pain and fit like a glove. It make scritch scritch sounds due to the liner brand new ^^ but those are really supportive! I think to buy a 3x100 setup maybe in 1 month or two...

Hoooooooooly Shit… 🤯🤯🤯 I just got my FR1 325 3/125’s today. I haven’t skated in over 20 yrs. I took em out to the parking lot across from my apt complex about an hour ago. When I tell you I was terrified at least 8 times while rolling through this damn empty parking lot, I’d imagine those of you with extensive experience are shaking your fingers at me. I had all the pads on fortunately and didn’t actually fall. But I felt like a kid trying to relearn to walk. Wow. I did not expect it to be a damn scary. I think I’m gonna have to order a new 4 wheel frame and wheels right away to prevent killing myself. I’ve learned my lesson. I get it. I’ll gave to get the 80’s and learn to control, balance etc PROPERLY. Do NOT get 125 without extensive experience. Take my word for it!! 😭😭😭✌️🥂

Oh yeah. 3*125 is a very specific setup. Don't be discouraged by it. You will like it some day:D and you will surely be more confident on 80s. Good luck!

Same here i had kaze 310 after 20 years of break in agressive skating and freeskating and feel the same. Well kaze have semi hard boot so not enought support and i can't powerslide with them so very scary. I selled them. but they were confy and very fast. This year i ordered twister 4x80 (maybe next year i 'll try the 90mm or 3x100) Also it's harder to push on it at beginning , in town you push you stop you push so not enjoyable maybe if i can powerslide them i 'll brake less but it wasn't a good experience. However i enjoyed speed skating on empty parking lot :)

@phosphore7991 yeah, I also heard that Kaze are rather soft, not the best skate to start with big wheels. My first big wheels were Nexts, and I still think that they're perfect for bigwheel blading.

@@NikZvi Yep but the problem for the powerslide was much about the wheels grip to much or maybe it's a mix of the 2 factors also i have tried only to times to stop with 2 parallels feets and the wheels don't slide they plant (89A from memory) It can be my fault too i dunno but if i can't stop it's really not safe. i 'll try the next in 100 mm.Have you try the 110 mm? They are good for bad tarmac and maybe better for the city compared to the 125 mm.

@phosphore7991 89 is a good hardness for sliding, so you've probably just had to get used to them. And yeah, I'm skating on 110 most of the time, they are probably best for versatile city skating.

I think it depends on the skater's purposes, abilities and environment. I'm not a great skater, I can't do tricks, I use skates mostly for transport and fitness, and my city has very variable surfaces. So, for me, 3x110 is best. But for more skilful skaters who want to bust some tricks and jumps en route, or for skaters learning skills like slides, a four-wheel set-up is maybe better because it's more stable. 4x90 might be a good middle ground and seems to be a popular option among the very skilled skaters I know.

4:30 Kunstkamera (refused to visit since it's not about arts). 4:39 Rastral Column, one of two. Night skating was on Nevski, but can't tell what part of it. The De Kunstkamer might be built on that bank of river as dominant point. Similar to Sukharev Tower in one of low rise Moscow square. Peter The Great liked such dominance architectural spots observed by him in Holland. With 80mm it's easier to accelerate and go uphill, you can sort of sprint run on them. Larger wheels are easier for maintaining speed. Agreed: 80mm is the best option for beginners, but when combined with hard shell boots: soft should be never purchased, but that's hard to explain for novices. For me: urban skating on 80mm, smooth speedy on 110-125. All others in-between are not for this and not for that.

  • @NikZvi

From my experience going uphill on big wheels is easier, because the push is more effective. It's pretty difficult to run uphill in fact, seems easier to roll) I agree with other points.

@@NikZvi Everyone's experience is unique. Although energy preservation law remains intact and it does not matter for the same energy pickup: mV**2/2 or mgh :) There is a movie "Rotational inertia of and inline skate wheel" on Cadomotus channel. They compare narrower range of wheel's sizes, 100-125, but recommend smaller for uphill. But again, rotational resistance, road cracks and overall comfort are important too. For example, my long distance rides are faster on a bike that is more comfortable, but heavier and slower at sprinting and climbing.

I think all such attempts of objective analysis of different setups miss one important thing. They are trying to exclude the skater himself, but skates and the skater are let's say one biomechanical machine, there is no sense in analysing them apart. Different shapes, types of human body, length of feet, legs, weight of a skater, style of skating - that all makes an input and it becomes a very complex structure with a lot of influencing factors. So one skating setup could be perfect for i.e. speed skating for one person and much worse for the other. There are some objective factors of course but a lot of subjective also.

4x80mm is the most fun setup but if You need to cover a bigger distance they're too slow. So i use mostly 3x110mm for city skating, but would actually like to try 4x90 or maybe those rockered frames with bigger wheels to get that speed + maneuverability combo.

@@NikZvi I don't have this frame You have a short 125mm, but 3x110 already lacks agility for me a little bit , so on 3x125mm it would only be worse. I admit I really like the speed of 125mm, cruising on them is pure joy, but for city something smaller I think is more fun.

  • @NikZvi

Do you mean that they became loose with the time, or were loose initially? Mine became loose with time but were rather tight initially, although I've used all the sizing tables from powerslide and measured my foot to take the proper size

Everyone has his own preferences, but 4*80 is usually recommended for almost all disciplines. For example for slalom 255 mm frame ( the smallest possible for 84) will be too long.
