What should you do if your pipes freeze during a winter storm?

Power has been out for millions of Texans for more than 24 hours and with this historic cold, pipes are freezing solid. So how can you prevent them from bursting and what should you do if it's too late?

It's all y'all got left in the failed state of Texas. "only the strong will survive and the weak will [perish.]" "No one owes you [or] your family anything; nor is it the local government's responsibility to support you during trying times like this!" he said. "Sink or swim it's your choice! The City and County, along with power providers or any other service owes you NOTHING! Hope you can make that next boat payment

This is terrible advice. Heating the pipes isn't going to cause them to burst. It's the expansion of the ice that causes them to burst. You just don't know their burst until the water turns back to liquid and starts to flow. If your pipes have frozen turn the main valve OFF BEFORE you thaw them out. That way you won't have as big a mess to clean up. The idea that a warm towel will thaw the pipe is ridiculous. Most of the pipe is behind the wall where it's already frozen.

We shut the water off at the meter before it freezes so we can drain the lines. It doesn’t get turned on until the boil order expires.

We haven't had water for days. We don't know where our pipes are frozen at. We immediately shut the water off at the meter. All faucets are open. Nothing. Not even a drip. It hasn't been easy with 15 month old grandson...

We had every faucet running with a decent stream and this freeze froze them up like it was nothing. (N Texas) On top of that electric is gone so little remedy available. At this point, it's all frozen. It's not getting thawed anytime soon and the fates have it now.

Turn the main water valve into the house off. So if you have any burst pipes and the water thaws you won't have a huge flood.

@@tenthdimension9836 They are saying open faucets because most ppl are finding no burst pipes. And fixing the burst pipes requires opening the wall or jack hammering up cement anyway for the repairs. My water was out and once I got power on was flowing fine. Not sure about outside faucets or water filtration system but I’m warm and dry and there’s nothing I can do to help those pipes anyway.

I am living in New Jersey. I did not leave my water tap dripping water the night before last night, then the tap froze. There is one thing I don't understand about Texas. Texas is located in the South, so why does the weather there get so cold?

If my power had gone out for a long period of time (was only a few hours & water was still dripping), I was going to shut off my water & try to drain any excess water I could. Would rather be without water for a few days than deal with broken pipes. I dealt with that back in 2011. Never again (knock on wood)

I feel really sorry for the people in Texas, but after they get through this, they have to start acting like Canadians. Wood stoves, generators, snow tires Dec. 1st, pipes 4 ft. under the ground and water running into the sump pump hole six months a year. Windmills work fine here at -25 C.

I am a licensed plumber. My advice would be to find out how to and be able to quickly shut off the water. Then after you feel comfortable that you could do it quickly go open the frozen faucets wide open and watch. The heater and hair dryer in the video are not bad ideas. The most important thing is being able to shut it off quickly if there is a leak to avoid property damage.

I’d have been on that flight with him if they would have taken my big axx 200 lb dogs. Senate was out of session. Gov Abbott is tearing out axxholes over this. What was Cruz suppose to do? A speech to run out our batteries faster. Hand out blankets? Make a sandwich? This is probably worse than our hurricanes. Everyone that can leave - should. Including Senator Cruz. His office was still taking calls remotely. I can’t think of a thing he could do unless he could work an electrical pole. And yesterday workers got here from other states to do that. They CLIMBED poles in 20* and stayed up there till we had pwr back. That’s what we needed - not a Washington DC senator trying to put bologna and mustard on bread lol. I have a fully stocked kitchen . Even the line pole workers got twinkies and Dr Pepper from me. Find out this morning the kids would go home and change coats to get more twinkies ding dongs juice and cookies from me. And I still have boxes left. Anybody need a pop tart for breakfast? Lol

@Kelly Smith It's cold. Understand? Coal powered power plants aren't working. Gas powered power plants aren't working. Why? They boil water to run steam turbines and because they weren't properly winterized their water pipes froze. Water pipes don't belong to parties. This is not a political problem. It is a don't plan for the new climate problem.
