I got lucky on a single stock 10 years ago. A company I worked for at the time was struggling due to loss of contracts etc. I knew that it was not likely to go under but was getting near the verge. At the time I had inherited $3K unexpectedly so I thought of it as my blow money. I used it to purchase stock in my company at $0.45 a share. It had traded as high as $22 a share only 16 months before. I sat on them and waited it out. It got a little lower then eventually it began to climb. Within 4 years I decided to sell at just shy of $33 a share. I rolled that over to mutual funds and it will remain there until I retire in 12 years. Of course my story isn’t typical but sometimes you get lucky.

In-n-Out is a bad comparison because they're exclusively on the West Coast where us East Coasters and those in the Midwest can't have it nor experience it often. Anyone can find any reason as to why virtually ANY company is unethical. Again, if I wanted to invest in something ethical, I'd quit my job, join a nonprofit and create positive change in the world. If I want to increase my holdings and $$, I'll invest in companies that put that in my pocket. Unfortunately for you, that includes those companies you have issue with.

What do you mean it's virtually impossible to make money in single stocks? I invest in companies with a long history (at least 15 years) of increasing dividends every year, and I reinvest those dividends. Even if the price drops, it means my dividends buy a larger number of shares, which equates to even more dividends!

I need a little imputed.. i have a 2002 Ford Explorer sport trac with 135k miles. I love the truck and its runs great. I need a truck because i have a landscaping company and on top of this i am commuting about 40 miles a day to college. Im not in need of a new truck but my mom keeps worrying if my truck will be all that reliable due to the miles (i think it is)( she does not know about cars) . I was thinking though about if something where to go wrong and what would i do. I love ram 1500s and i see the lease deals at 2ish k down and 159 per month for 24 months i think thats a great deal for a truck but ik dave Ramsey people would say buy what you can in cash. I just feel like that mindset does not work with trucks because trucks are for work and you cant get a truck in great condition and under 100k miles for under 10k around me. Just looking for some hypothetical feedback.

AJ9 -First and foremost it is unlikely that anyone's opinion about how to spend YOUR money is going to be perfect for your situation, that includes your mom and me. However if I was in your shoes I would start putting the lease payment or more in a savings account. Aim for 200-250 a month because newer truck means higher insurance. Build that up over time and use it as a fund to repairs on your current truck which will hopefully last at least 4 years or roughly 225k miles. Then at that point I would sell it for whatever someone's willing to pay for it and combine the proceeds of the sale with the money from the repair fund to purchase a gently used, well maintained used truck for 9-14k depending on cash available. Hypothetically speaking don't sign a lease unless you have a CPA confirm that the tax benefits are significant for your company.

Rich, you should have held on to the Disney shares. As of 2-12-20, Disney is at $142.05/share, quarterly dividend is $.44/share. The value is $18466.50, quarterly dividend payout is $57.20. At the end of the year, the total dividend payout is $228. You could have those dividends buy more Disney stock. At the end of the year, you could have gained 1 share and a fraction. That stock is an asset putting money into your pocket. You cashed out to pay off debt. You traded paying off debt for cash flow. I guess I'm doing it all wrong. I love the high risk of owning individual stocks. My biggest play right now is Gazprom. Working on aquiring 1000 shares by July 2020. The annual dividend is $.50/share. That's $500! Then I'll do it all over again in 2021. The dividends will pay for my oil heat for every winter season. That's the power of dividends. That's freed up money for other things.

If you inherit an individual stock and you have the time/aptitude you should research the company. I would hold Disney stock because it is a blue chip, household name, pays a dividend, it is internally relatively diversified (theme parks, multiple networks, film, toys, etc). I would consider putting the dividend on a DRIP vs just taking the dividend payment to invest in ETFs/mutual funds. Disney is poised to increase in value once their streaming service comes online. They might also successfully purchase Fox. I would hold.

I would sell about 2/3 of them and then diversely invest the rest into heavily researched, safe stocks. This is actually creating your own mutual fund, which can be very safe if you’re experienced in the field. I am only 18, but I’ve had my own mutual fund for 4 years invested in 47 different companies (just had to go count lol). But that Disney stock is very valuable and is not worth selling all of, unless you’re trending down, in which case (in my experience) I would sell it around $90 (or 7% below what you got it for) and take your losses so it doesn’t drag down the rest of your mutual fund. Make sure you’re invested a good amount every month, preferably 100-200 dollars. Just my thoughts

The same Netflix which would have to continue its currently growth rate for the next 5-6 years to even MATCH Disney's current profit! Disney for the patient, Netflix for the dreamers.

Pritam Das that’s the point though, you do your research on a company, search up what they have done and what they plan on doing. We live in a day and age where this information isn’t just insider information everyone is talking about it; more articles than what I can count on my hands are made everyday about these companies everyday. Stocks are not safe but when you make calculates decisions with your money you will be rewarded. But hey that’s my opinion you can stay away from the stocks it’s there for people who look up the facts and trust a company to innovate and profit off there creations and services.

A combination of multiple securities(stocks, bonds, money markets, or any combination) managed professionally. An easy to see example is of a mutual fund that holds only stocks. Instead of buying individual stock (ie. disney, Netflix, Tesla ), an investor is putting their money in a mutual fund, basically a combination of stocks chosen by financial professionals for a specific purpose (growth, stability). Positive aspects of a mutual fund include diversification and professionals financial management Negative aspects of a mutual fund include not being able to tailor your securities inside the mutual fund and the fees and expenses which can easily offset gains by 1% or more

I would sell it, Disney may acquire 21st Century Fox, which will add more debt to the balance sheet, and they are still suffering from ESPN. Also, Netflix is up 105% year to date, beats out Apple by quite a lot :P. But diversification is key. ETFs and mutual funds for inexperienced investors until you learn how to value companies.

I haven't seen their financials, but as a business, Disney seems a top bet. I'm not talking about a short term 2-3 year horizon, over 5-10 years. They are literally a monopoly in the business of IP in entertainment. They own most of the recognised faces in the world. They don't need to spend on their asset that keeps giving. Also, they appeal directly to children, the part of the family that can be influenced most and have the power to open their parents' wallets widest. The business is also evergreen. As long as there are children, there will be Disney. Additionally, they have a high standard of quality. When they make a movie, or even better, their subsidiary, Pixar makes a movie, it is an excellent movie. Best animation in the market, excellent directing, screenplay, story etc. Plus being made by Disney, makes almost every movie a guaranteed success. Without going into valuations, as a business, long term, you have limited to no downside risk, unless they do some massively stupid deals that ruins them, but a forever compounding, naturally growing company. Naturally growing, because once they make a movie, get all the profits out of it, they additionally get to keep a new asset in the movie and its characters, which at no cost to maintain, become another asset that keeps giving.

Disney pays 2 dividends/year, approx. 88c/share each time, so even with the risk involved, he’d still be getting that steady dividend, unless Disney halted it (unlikely). Many well-performing companies will actually increase their dividend payouts over time as well, to attract more buyers.

This is the only thing I disagree with dave on is single stocks. I buy high quality dividend paying companies. Dividend Aristocrats and Kings with a little Disney as well. Why not pick the best performing stocks from the best preforming mutual funds? Or pick companies that supply services you use every day? Things like utilities, water treatment companies, electric companies, and waste processing companies. Maybe the companies that you purchase products from every time you go to the store. The makers of your tooth paste, deodorant, mouth wash, toilet paper, food products and cleaning supplies. I buy stocks that I know that make products I use. I'm making 100$ passive income a month, it grows monthly and will until I retire. I understand the mutual fund argument just would rather buy consistency individually vs a group. I gain more with individual dividend payments then say the snp 500

Single stocks like Netflix and Amazon are only going to go up. There is nothing wrong with single stock investing as long as you do the research and fully believe they are going to continue to succeed. For example: If you invested $1000 in Netflix back in 2007, it would be $108,000 today. I looked it up. Makes me hate myself I didn’t do that back then.

Can't guarantee that kind of return with Google, but their Waymo unit is money in the bank. KZread search "tony seba freightwaves" for why. Also good investment: VZ (their 5G network will move a lot of self-driving car data, and the Yahoo purchase included a web advertising unit). NVidia could be big in providing chips for self-driving cars. Amazon, Microsoft, and Salesforce are great data analytics stocks. Get TSLA and GM in equal dollar amounts (currently eight shares of GM per TSLA share), made in one go as a hedge on each other. One will succeed gigantically, while the other won't, and I don't know which one is which.
