Matt, I’ve been golfing for 2.5 yrs now and have watched your videos from the very beginning. Broke 100 within my first 6 months without a driver, hitting a spinny 180yd 5W off the tee and trusting the way of the player, bump and running as much as possible. I now play to a 16hcp, building on the same bump/run fundamentals I had as 30+ hcp. I’m not a long hitter either, ~145yds with a 7i. I’ve only recently started to better understand the lie of the ball. When I analyze my rounds, I realize how many shots I drop through poor course management and not because of swing mechanics. I hardly hit the range and yet find myself improving just from applying everything you talk about. guys, this stuff really works. TRUST THE PROCESS

the most important part of that whole comment playa is that you think about your rounds. fairways, greens, OB, pentlies, 3 putts, double chips, gaffed 100 yard shots are all good things to look at in general but the main question is always WHY did that happen? can you pick up any patterns in your behavior/technique flaw/thinking/strategy? then HOW to fix it this is the only way to get better. dingleberries call it 'making excuses' but the excuses is the first place to start. then the reason why, then the fix. The thing that’s helped me most is my mental game, if I do hit it in the rough from the tee don’t panic. I carded a double bogie or worse free round for the first time last week. I hit plenty of bad shots but didn’t panic or get frustrated and a lot of up and downs. Love your videos

Matt, I just want you to know, I broke 85 for the first time the other day. Shot an 83. Your videos have taught me how to play smart golf, and that's what I did to break 85. Rather than driver every time, I hit 3 iron or 3 wood, I even hit my best tee shot with a 5 iron. Patience, course management, and a chill attitude is what I have learned from you, and I am forever grateful for that. The way of the playa works. Cheers

Good video. I may not be a scratch golfer, but I can learn from this. Managing the misses so that I can give myself the better chance to get up and down. My putting is quite good in that I do not 3 putt often. And I have improved my off the tee shots which has brought my scores down to low 80s more often than not. I am just looking on getting things right to get me down to single diget handicap.

So I just started to golf seriously this year, having played only a handful of times before. I find that instead of teaching someone how to hit the ball, you teach how to play. I found myself really seeing the game from a different perspective, and I ended up playing with a far better mentality. A shot that was off wasn't a bad shot, it was a shot that just ended up changing what my next shot would be, and that was a ton of stress that I was able to let go of. After watching a bunch of your videos, I was able to turn what would've been a frustration filled outing into a fun round, so I just wanted to say thanks!

Struggling to break 80 and had a round yesterday where I was +5 through 14 holes. Pushed my ball right off the tee on 15 but I got greedy and felt like I could still attack the pin from the rough… on the 1 handicap hole. Ended up pulling left into a hazard, and after a drop and a couple bad chips I ended the hole with a triple. Whole round blew up from there. I forgot the way of the playa for one moment of weakness and it cost me the goal. Just coming here to confess and commit to be better next time.

@golfsidekick what I notice when playing with a scratch golfer compared to my 8 handicap is how many strokes I waste inside 100 yards. When putting for par from 8-10 feet or when you need to get up and down that is where they are way better on most days. Of course they are more consistent and their bad tee shots are closer together then my bad tee shot but for the most part it’s 100 yards and in

  • @GolfSidekick

The putts break toward that part of the hole. it's a good starting point to check which way your putt breaks. If its behind the hole, you are in for a fast putt. if its in the front of the up, its a slow putt slope is the 2nd aspect sometimes slope and grain (which causes the burn mark) can counter act each other and the grain could make a burn mark on the right edge, but the slope could be right to left. the putt could be straight!

I finally did it a couple weeks back. 71. First time under par for 18. 13/14 fairways 10/18 GIRs (but was never more than 10-15' off the edge in pretty good spots) 5 up and downs 28 putts (never had more than 6' for par and missed more than I made from that range, lots of tap in pars) Made a birdie on #18 to clinch it after hitting driver to the corner of a dog leg par 5, faded a 2 iron around some trees to get next to the green, almost chipped in, then drained the 4.5' putt. Less than a week later and I come down with a case of the hosel rockets.

When I started tracking greens in reg and # of putts per round, it really helped me. I could track where I was losing strokes. If I can hit 11-12 greens and have 28ish putts I know I've shot 70 or close to it. Short game /wedges and putting are where it's at. Stay in play and lean on that wedge game and putter. Congratulations on your round, it will be much easier to do again now that you know what it takes to pull it off.

biggest stats: "but was never more than 10-15' off the edge in pretty good spots" we could rename it "holeable in regulation' or 'puttable in regulation' How did you do that? good tee shot in GOOD POSITION, then aiming for the good spot. absolutely money. 5 up and downs - huge. this is a follow up from the 'not more than 10-15 feet off the edge in good spots.' 28 putts, whatevs, but "never had more than 6' for par and missed more than I made from that range, lots of tap in pars" is the key. Inside 3-6 feet you are probably 80%+ make rate. And in one round you could make them all.
