I remember back in 2012 before the craze, bubble tea was approximately $2.25 per drink, and my sister and I would get ourselves one and hand then $5 and be left with some change. Now it's doubled in price, with some even up to $10. Insane.

In the mid 2000s it was less than $2 and that was in Chinatown in NYC! I think it was $1.50 at the chinese bakeries. We'd eat it with bubble pancakes. it was $1 then too. I learned about it through my taiwanese friend. Her mom would make us warm tea with boba.

It is no more worse than Iced Coffee, soft fizzy drink or even yoghurt! If you eat flavoured yoghurt, try eating natural yoghurt next time by adding some fruit conserve (jam) in it and see how many teaspoons you need to add in order to sweeten it to the same level.

If you get the boba (tapioca pearls) with your milk tea, you should order the drink at “0% sugar level”.The boba pearls are soaked in honey and sugar already, so when put into the drink, it already contains sugar. Just another hit piece on bubble tea industry. Some people with vested interests in coffee cafes and colas are just angry their drinks market share is being eaten away. Bubble tea industry has already met the challenge by customising sugar levels. They are just grasping at straws. Many other foods also contain a lot of saturated fats, sugar like soft serve ice cream, iced coffee, fizzy soft drinks, yoghurt with lots of sugary toppings e.g. sprinkles, sugary cereals. If you want to find out how much sugar per 100g, just read their nutritional info on the side of the products.

When I was in secondary school and JC, I always took public transportation home. Usually, I would feel hungry after school and since the weather is always so hot in Singapore, I would buy a cup of iced bubble tea every day (back then there were 'Sweet Talk' stores near MRTs that sold them for $1.5). Also, I needed the sugar to have the energy to do my homework.

10 years ago I would drink a lot of milk tea but these days I would usually only drink something like grapefruit green tea or any type of fruit flavor syrup with brewed tea. Also ask them to adjust my sugar to 10% - 0% sugar. Only time I order a dairy base bubble tea if its matcha latte. Im also not a fan of tapioca pearls, usually opt for custard, grass jelly, aloe vera or red beans lol As you age it's hard to consume milk tea because of the sugar and dairy.

Sugar la.. it's time to recognize sugar addiction as a problem. I've heard a friend say she's gets chills if she doesn't get her sugar fix. So many of the COVID-19 deaths were people with diabetes, but people still drink so much bubble tea.

This is just one of many hit pieces against bubble tea industry, in print and media. My guess is the coffee and cola companies from a certain big country are angry by their lucrative market share is being eaten away. Some bubble teas don't even have tea or coffee but are just chocolate milk or light fruit teas. They mentioned in the beginning of the video that the bubble tea topped the drinks ordered ahead of cola and coffee.

this is our favorite junk to drink when we are in Taiwan year 1992 to 1995. We were addicted to it more than a coffee, and we need to have that fix at least one cup a day. And thank God it was rarely available here in Penang when i moved here 1996. at least i was able to programmed myself to get rid of it, and now i am proud to say, i just look at it when i passed by the shop as it is available in every corner of the mall.

Not sure if most people still drink bubble tea with 100% sugar. More people usually go for 50 or 30% nowadays (depends on demographics). Also, it would have been better if Steve did not know about the supposed effects of drinking too much bubble tea before he went on the experiment, such as having mood spikes. He might have been affected by what was mentioned to him and became more conscious about it. This might make the experiment seem like a less fair one - a 'self-fulfilling prophecy'.

I'm surprised at the sweet tooth that the drinkers have. My daily nectar is milk coffee without sugar and I will only eat sweet pastry if I crave it or after eating a nice, savory, umami-type of meal. But to have a sweet bubble tea AND pastry as well just hurts my teeth from sugar overload. I enjoy coffee specifically to balance out the sweetness.

I'm 41 I've seen 2 BBT waves, the first was when it first hit our shores, that's afaik 1998, every other person was trying to open up a bbt store, there was no big names , it's just corner stores. And then it died down... And recently I think 2010~2015 ? it came back better and classier, with big names like LIHO gongcha . Tried it back in the 90s was pretty nice. Never touched it since

I love bubble tea but stick to one per month. Every since watching documentaries on sugar my eyes have been opened. Hoping to fully quit eventually. Sugar has the same effect on the body as alcohol, just without the high. So why are we comfortable giving kids these sugary drinks but not alcohol?

I've watched part 1 & 2 now. I personally found this part 1 more interesting and factual than part 2 👍🏼 But they're both great! I believe everything in moderation. 😎 By the way... Sugar is in EVERYTHING now a days... Just start reading the ingredients labels. Even restaurants add it into dishes because it helps bring out the flavor. And as for caffeine, Americans drink on average 3-cups of coffee a day... So putting everything into context is helpful. But I do agree with the (unfortunate) marketing to children and teens... Mcdonald's has been sued numerous times over the years with their amazing marketing to children 🤷🏼‍♀️ But it's all business and profits 🤦🏼‍♀️

I take mine with only 50%, and also not ice. When the ice melts, it dilutes the drink, losing it's flavor.
