What’s Up With Washington State’s Tax System?

Washington state’s vibrant and diverse economy doesn’t hint at it. Neither does Seattle’s red-hot construction and tech boom, nor the sheer wealth of some of our residents. You’d never know it by the tens of thousands of people moving to Puget Sound for the plentiful jobs and outdoorsy lifestyle.
But, Washington has a tax problem.
It simply can’t seem to raise enough money to fund basic services. Especially not in ways that feel fair to most people or even meet what courts say are the fundamental expectations for important services. Read more: kcts9.org/node/55446

Oregon claims it needs a sales tax to make it’s system balanced. Washington claims it needs an income tax to make it’s system balanced. California has both, and they still cry poor mouth. Fact; it will never be enough. The state will always spend all they have no matter the amount, and then cry they need more. They will never have enough until they have it all and dole out to you what you “need”. When I was a kid, the tax rate was about 4%. The economy has grown larger and larger, yet the rate goes up. That means government is taking a greater proportion. A never mind the pie is bigger, they want a larger proportion of the larger pie. I say NO. I won’t fall for it; the Supreme Court of our state was absolutely correct, a flat tax is just, the schemes our politicians want are simply robbery and indentured servitude designed to empower the government more and more. The state of Washington needs to be held in check.

I'm sick of support the .0001% over on Mercer Island with my sales tax pennies. I have lived in King County most of my life. Can't wait to get back to Oregon where I can afford to survive.

So I take it you wouldn’t move to Portland... cause Portland and Seattle have many of the same problems, I’m east of the cascades, and the only thing going up rn is property values

This is PBS? A government funded entity advocating for an income tax??? What the hell is that??? Funny, he didn't mention the estate tax in Washington? That's not antiquated? Also sales tax is exempt for groceries. I guess the buyers of food have are a special interest, eh? Man, I want government money so I can advocate for stuff. shameful

Oregon is essentially a flat 9 percent tax after 17k, your video makes it sound like a progressive tax which it only is technically because it raises to 9.9 percent for the highest income earners. Washington does attract people how make short term capital gains which in turn raises property values, so it’s good to keep things in perspective. Granted a sales tax is extremely regressive and I prefer Oregon’s system.

That’s because you also pay federal taxes, here are the rates for Oregon in 2019: Personal income tax rates (2019) start at 5%, rising to 7% on single/joint tax returns with taxable income greater than $3,550/$7,100, and then 9% on income greater than $8,900/$17,800, up to $125,000/$250,000. At that point, the marginal rate is 9.9% on income in excess of that level.

Problem isn't the tax it's how the business taxes and money is used. Remove corruption and everything will function better. Property tax is 1% propery value is raising proportional. And businesses are taxed. Living in an area of Washington like Vancouver WA, their budget managing better than almost any city within the state.

You can always cut on spending. After all one somebody realizes they can get subsidized housing and food stamps it’s kind of an incentive to do the minimum to survive and keep the benefits. Once you start the Welfare State it almost impossible stop it.

BS. Part of the problem is the exemptions given to the political pals that often run the businesses, and the other part is simply due to the complete incompetence in how the government operates. All these "services" and social programs are not only bloated, costly, but more often than not, unnecessary. Private sector used to cover this. It is not that the tax laws are out of date, there is no such thing as out of date tax laws, but rather that corruption and incompetency runs rampant in local and federal government. They will never be happy because they always want more, and budget poorly in the process. Property taxes as well punish anyone who wants to own property, much less save up to buy something nice or live in a nice area. Taxes have always been a form of theft mixed with extortion, you can lose everything if you do not fork out the value of your labor so that someone else can spend it.

Thank your Washington State Landlord. The unemployment insurance system in Washington state temporarily benefits workers who lose their job through no fault of their own or quit work for a good cause. Benefits are funded by premiums collected from employers. All the employers who employed a claimant during the base year are charged in proportion to the hours worked for each employer. The State collects the money and allocates it. The State of Washington passes a moratorium on rent collection. The landlords in Washington do not collect or allocate any unemployment funds from businesses. The Washington State LANDLORDS pay their tenants'(unemployed claimant) rent for almost a year(so far) as a loan with zero interest in 2020. Washington State still collects unemployment benefits from employers. But they are not paying rent regarding the people they collected the intended money. Why are our landlords paying for our State's responsibilities when the State has collected the funds but refuses to allocate it to the unemployed claimant. Why is the State acting like the landlords are the terrible apples? Maybe the State should look in a mirror? Thank your landlord for doing their job and the job of the State of Washington without the funds or resources. And ask Washington State where the money is? Thank you, landlords.

So many issues with this video. First off, the rich dont pay income tax. They make money behind their corporation and pay themselves very little to pay smaller taxes. Learn the tax system folks. Also, state income tax would hurt the poor. Extra $40 a year to file taxes, if not more depending on the person and their circumstances. Also, extra taxes to pay each year! The issue here is they should replace sales tax with a non essentials consumption tax.
