@@professionalidiot07I would add that Kai isn’t as wrapped up or dependent on mainstream sponsors and those camera brands he does work with are fully aware that Kai may just say something others wouldn’t, and that one sentence may save you money or encourage you to look into the product more as you are interested, he has a built in honesty, sarcasm and irreverence, that other reviews done have or could get away with.

I stopped watching Fro a long time ago. I still watch Kai and Lok in their new environment. I see them more an entertainment than true knowledge.

I used to watch Jared's channel because he was entertaining and I like how he shared his personal story about how he built the channel with both hard work and love of photography. But pretty quickly I grew tired of his shtick, his inflated ego, clickbait, relentless ads, and obnoxious personality. I haven't watched him in over a year. I had no idea he put down Kai and that's sad to hear because Kai a funny and genuine guy. He has never put himself out there as a professional photographer and has been up front with his past, working for a camera store, started doing videos that turned into a funny channel. Love Kai and will always support him.

THAT! I used to watch all his videos from around 2013-14 maybe and maybe up until 2017ish used to enjoy it. But then I believe something happened and he became what you describe so perfectly above. Seen a couple of his videos lately and quite frankly I can't stand them anymore. Although I still love watching Kai, he was a fun guy who actually made me do some shopping with DigitalRev when he were with them.

@@MrRoosterx He became consumed with making money and building his brand. No would deny a creator his right to earn a living but if you go too far you become an a hole. The appeal of KZread is watching people with unique voices who aren't part of the corporate machine. Some channels grow too big they become companies. Linus Tech another example. They hire a team and churn out videos.

Kai and Lok had Top Gear energy. Their street photoshoots were like little versions of the journeys from TG. They even made a pastiche of the show in their high speed camera circuit.

Kai gives you a kind of real world review of what a camera is like to use 'in the field'. He rarely gets a cool photo while out for the afternoon trying out a new camera, but then again, most 'street' photographers don't get any either on a lot of days, and they're not trying to film a review AND be entertaining at the same time too! So it's super harsh to call him a bad photographer. I think Kai really loves cameras and can explain the pros and cons of each model pretty well. If every camera channel was like Kai's it would get boring, but the same goes for if every channel was 'dry' reviewing. Room for all flavours!

Jared Polin's hair (it's a Jew Fro) is naturally Curly. He does not cut his hair because of something he was going to do for his MOTHER. His mother was battling cancer and had lost all of her hair. Jard plan was to grow his hair long enough to make his mom. Sadly she passed before he could do so. So now you know why he keeps his hair long.

Growing up, I always felt uncomfortable showing my interest in photography. I signed up for a photography class, and my teacher was an entitled, pretentious know-it-all. Same with the employees of my local camera shop. I was often talked down to and treated poorly, due to lack of understanding about the craft. Jared Polin always gave me those same vibes and that why I never subscribed to their channel. It makes me like him even less knowing he openly talks down about other KZreadrs. I enjoy Kai W's work, he is fun, genuine and seems approachable.

Not a big fan of Jared, but I agree with his thoughts on Kai. I think some "photo" channels have lost the script and are hardly about photography. Kai just seems to wing it without a plan and I have never been able to sit through a single video.

@@MarioCastillion Same here took me a while to be honest. At first people get brainwashed by KZread. And I think the problem is boys like their toys. When we was all little kids it was Star Wars toys and many other things. Now as adults its cameras, cars and other things. Plus when you are starting out a lot of people don't even know about workshops. I've bought a few of them and learned almost everything I need about photography in general. Wedding photography will give you a well rounded education because you do a little bit of everything on a wedding. Even if you have zero interest in wedding photography they are good as a crash course into photography.

Love your honesty, man! Keep up and I`ll keep watching :)

Big fan of both channels so I’d like to think I’m unbiased here, I think the main reason Jared doesn’t like Kai’s work is because it’s two completely different niches. Jared is a professional photographer when it comes to things like events, meanwhile Kai is definitely more of a street photographer. I disagree with the Clickbait part of the video because I’m assuming you’re talking about the photonews fixes. These are weekly videos that talk about all camera news and so obviously he’ll save the biggest piece of news for the end of the video because that’s how basic viewer retention works. I feel like the hair comment takes away from your argument because you’re not going after Jared is a person you’re just making fun of his hair.

Kai’s channel is awesome. As a working photographer myself, it has always seemed that it’s unlikely that anyone running a photography channel full time is an actual working photographer. Maybe that’s that’s why so few show any of the photo work they actually do. Doesn’t mean anything, just an observation. Kai’s channel still rocks and I will continue to watch it.

I think Jared is a good photographer but there are a lot of good photographers now...It's not as specialized as it once was and is more content centered...

I brought my first new camera online, a 1D mark ii from Digitalrev in 2008 or 2009, when Kai was working there. I'd had many used cameras before then though. Kai's videos were awesome back then, the early days of KZread, a true pioneer of the craft. My Dad, 200 km's away, loved them to and it was one of the few silly things we could both talk about and laugh at, he was a serious man. Kai will always have a special place in my heart for that. Dad's long gone now, Kai lives on and now I make good money with an R3 + 100-300mm f2.8. Yer dad it took me 50+ years to get here and I still remember your darkroom that was out of bounds as a kid and the memories of talking about Kai's latest silly reviews on KZread. I can't thank Kai enough for that. Jared, well he offers 10% of that entertainment factor but I do appreciate his options but DON'T EVER say a bad word about Kai.

That's a great story man...I think there was a much better time for photography and those people were pioneers helping people learn the craft and genuinely talk about the photography industry... I think everyone has there own way and tactics to things, photography is an art and its up to the individual to decide what they consider is art for them and what they enjoy taking photos of most. so its not fun when others like this point out another person and just trys to drag them to the ground. we are all in it for the experience and the joy it brings 😊 keep it up man!!

Basically what follows the logic is this: Fro is invited to shoots with models, then goes to baseball matches. If you don't get to shoot models and celebrity sportsmen, you are a bad photographer from what I hear from him. Influencers have no idea of art, but Kai and Lok got many people interested in street photography (me included). I think of it like a person who does portraits of wealthy people who complains that street art exists. They do it because street art challenges the idea that art must be exclusive. Most of street photography is kind of silly and unimpressive, but that's just a documentation of a longer process that gets you actual good shots. Street photography is a statistical game. You must be brave and persistent and eventually you find your treasures.

I love KaiW’s videos. It took me several years to discover his personal channel after the Digital Rev breakup. I'm also a fan of Jared Polin, though I think he was out of line with his comments about what Kai brings to the hobby and profession. Has Jared ever issued a retraction or apology? Or has he discussed any regrets regarding the insult incident? There seemed to be some jealousy or another issue at play. I’d like to hear the full interview for context on what triggered his reaction. Like, did Kai say something first on his channel to insult The Fro? However, Lane, your comments about Jared’s afro aren’t much better. To each their own. Maybe Jared can help your channel get more traffic by insulting you back like Kai? 😅

I really hate it when content creators put down other content creators, whether what they say is true or not. I am speaking generally here not just in the photography genre. Creators need to produce their own content not at the expense of other creators. It's fine if one points out a correction to what some other creator said that might be misleading, but that's where the line should be drawn. I've watched Kai's channel and he is a boots on the ground street photographer, so I don't even understand where Jared is coming from. And yes, I think he should ditch the fro too, but that literally has become his trademark.

Haven't watched him in years. I guess he's appealing when you are just getting into the hobby, but after a while his whole personality gets super grating. And he has these ridiculous opinions, like hating fuji for trying to mimic film cameras, the aperture ring specifically. For me that is now something I don't like shooting without. Once I heard that never bothered him after that. It wasnt the only thing, but it was the nail in the coffin for me. dude's a hack.

There are all sorts of reviewers out there. I prefer the ones like Kai who truly have a passion for gear and express the fun of using cameras rather than the ones that focus on spec sheets and pixels. They both have fun and funny moments, but Kai's run and gun energy truly motivates me to grab my cameras and get outside.

Kai and Lok were one of the original camera people on KZread. I watch them, Gordon from Cameralabs, Jordan & Chris from the Camera Store/Dpreview/Petapixel, Matt Granger and Chelsea & Tony Northrup, amongst others. They all have their individual style. Jared’s comments say more about him than about Kai and Lok, I agree with your analysis. It’s a shame because I do like his Photoshop profiles and his reviews.

I used to watch all those channels but now these reviews with cameras getting better and better have become unnecessary...I'll stick with what I have for now since he cost like a house, so I'm not interested in the latest greatest thing... Reminds me of the tv thing. Lat years Tv is worth nothing and you need this new tech.. I never meant for anyone to stop watching Jared, all photography shows are good for us...

In Kai's defense, at some point you just want to take photos and stop following photography rules for fun. This is more likely if you've just acquired new gear. With new gear you're taking the most random and test shot type photos to play around. Kai gives us that part, which does show the true use case of the gear when you initially buy it.

I stopped watching Jared a long time ago, but still subscribe to both Kai & Lok. It didn't take too long for me to realise that Jared is/was, at best, a very average photographer, his channel and his content are about his personality not his ability.

Kai and Lok were the best in DigitalRev. Was so sad that they split but see them occasionally making some videos together. Don't know what the fuss is about. Fro was also cool. Don't know why he started being a hater.

Jared can be too much at times, but it’s just kind of his shtick. He also does some very genuine philanthropy, that he only talks about occasionally. Like him or hate him, I look at him as the Howard Stern of Photography (old stern, not the new one). Just my 2 cents.

Fair assessment I think...

I've never really followed Jared Polin because I do not like his personality or style of presenting things, only seen his videos when researching something where I basically watch every video I can find on that subject. Kai Wong on the other hand I could watch for hours straight, he's just funny and a more down to earth, honest type of guy, and that is worth more than anything flashy. Chelsea and Tony Northrup also have things a bit more structured in their videos, but still seem a lot more genuine and nice people while still being as factually correct they can and giving helpful advice.

Ah you know Jared seems to be either you like him or you hate him type thing. i don't think his work is not without merit, and I think he's good for KZread. That said, I typically take a pass on his stuff. I like Chelsea but Tony gives me the creeps. Great channel though! I like Chriss and Lizzy Hau together but I think they split! Sad!

On one hand, I get it. Clicks matter. Watch time matters. And creating beef gets both of those. But is that temporary boost in engagement worth alienating yourself from the community? I wouldn’t think so. I like Jared. I always have. But he could definitely drop the schtick, drop the fro, and drop the “I shoot raw” thing and he’d be as relevant as he is today, maybe even more. But what do we know right? We don’t have a million subscribers. 🤷‍♂️

This is my first time hearing about Jared saying that about Kai. That was very immature. Are Jared's photos all that? Are they hanging in a museum somewhere? I always enjoyed watching Digital Rev. Their intro to the video is amazing. The show was very lighthearted and entertaining it wasn't pretending to be anything it wasn't. They even had guest photographers on the show. It also seemed to me that Jared was insinuating that Digital Rev viewers are stupid for watching.

Kai is great...we need more humor. I agree with the Jared Polin assessment, although to get a KZread channel subscribers and views a certain abount of clickbait is necessary. One of the first videos I watched of his was great. I had just purchased a Canon 80d off Ebay and what he was able to do with that camera and the 18-135mm kit lens in the "5 minute portrait" series at Porter & Co. Jeans was amazing to me. He went through photographing and editing the photos and it was very informative. Good luck with your channel.

I will watch Kai and Lok over Jared any day. Got so tired of sniffing gear or if it’s not pro lens it’s just ok. I have a Z9 and pro lenses for most of my work and a Z6 with entry level glass for just having fun. I can show my pics to people and they can’t tell the difference which camera took what. Kai and Lok for me showed everything from entry level to pro and has helped from the DigitalRev days to now. I’ve stopped watching Jared over a year ago when I didn’t appreciate the way he was treating the models and the same stick over and over. Lane, just found your channel and I can tell you now it’s growing at least by another subscriber! Great channel.

I like fro, and honestly never heard of Kai but I'll be entertained to watch his vids too. I 1000% agree with the statement "there's room for both lanes!" I see some comments about real photographers aren't reviewers and i think it's throwing shade because he's shady. Let's keep it real, he's a legit sports photographer and know his stuff. But i think his problem is definitely his arrogance and his approach to what real photography is. He's talked about critiques and what editors want in photos and etc so he has this ingrained thought on that. Him and the northups have gone at it on what"real" photography and camera equipment does and it misses the mark. Anywho, now i have to check a few of kai's videos but keep doing what you're doing. There's a lane for everyone on YT

Well Kai isn't all that funny nor is that Camera conspiracy Guy. Kai actually did a Serious Video with another yTuber about the merits of the Panasonic S9 that was actually pretty darn good. Too many Folks think they have to be Clowns these days. That's not really helping promote photography. Hence more and more folks just sticking with their so call Smartphones instead. Why should anyone take yTuber as serious sources anymore if all they do is behave like Clowns.

Kai Wong and the Digital Rev team were closely compared to the Top Gear of the photography world which I believe is one of the best compliments one could get. Fro Knows Photo is a talking head, and always will be. In the world of the creative arts and photography, I've never considered Jared to be some sort of world-renowned photographer.. He's an educator, and that's okay. He's built quite the business model and has essentially made his dream come true. I think the issue with Jared is that he's always sort of been cocky when it comes to his skill set, and that's unfortunate

I bought the Canon R8 when it came out because of Jarrod's review. There were plenty of others reviewing at the time and always something missing. He just nailed the purchase decision for me. Interestingly, because of his Fro, I could probably recognize him from a satellite photo. But it is his genuine original content that keeps me interested. Having said that, creators need to be innovators, and some of their efforts may be less than worthy. They just try stuff, then delete if it's a failure. I would rather see that then another, late to the party, me-too mindless pretty face drone regurgitating what everyone else said. So many copy cats. Lets just have a moment of silence for original content creators. (Insert picture of zen guy lotus position on a mountain top at sunset.)

Initially, when I discovered FKPs,...I'd watch the entire video,...however, as time went on, I started "fast forwarding" through his vids! As for Kai W, I pretty much watch his entire vids without fast forwarding, etc. Also, as far as I know, I'm Sub'd to FKP, but not to Kai W. The way I look at it is this,...Jared is in one space of photography and Kai W is in another space! Which basically affirms that there are many ways of being actively engaged with Photography! A Photog that shoots weddings could care less about automotive or insect photography,...just as a guy that capture pets only doesn't care for astrophotography, etc. So, Jared has it completely wrong IMO!

2 totally different types of people and category of photographers. They have there styles and it seems to work for each one, but Jared annoys and entertains me...kai just a fun dude!!

Seems like comments one makes in haste, regardless, buying into it and making a whole video draws more attention to it, whether he likes Kai or not is his business, he's entitled to his opinion like everyone else, I don't agree with it a lot of people don't agree with it, but giving his words more meaning and power is up to us, making a video on it is on pair with his comments. Idk, just my take, regardless, you got some cool videos and dope stuff too man.

Well... I'm on the other spectrum of things. I like Fro. I entertain myself over his videos. I listed to the podcast he has. It's the way he works, in my opinion. The afro is his trademark. He likes to be seen but he makes fun in himself at the same time. Just,in my opinion, he is on his own level of doing things. I love Kai. I love what you said and I love freedom of expressing oneself. I am subscribing to your channel. Every voice matters. Cheers!

We, as photographers, should always educate ourselves in new techniques styles and so on. But there is time to just relax and see like-minded people do their thing. Jared makes it easy to learn some things and entertain at the same time.

My take everyone does their own thing. Most of the big tubers are click bait mad (Tony is particularly bad). Kai goes for entertainment I get that, though I don't find I learn much about the cameras or lenses. Jared is a good photographer and does a good hands on field test, but there's a bit too much self centred stuff going on there (line between confidence and coming across the wrong way it's a bit too pumped for me) I don't watch either of them these days. I go for information, but some might find them boring - that's OK we all do what we want. Everyone can have a rant I suppose, but considering how big his channel is why bother? Both Kai and Fro are big enough to not worry about each other!

Jared has mediocre to average photography skills, but I give him props for being a marketing genius with his vlogging and shilling. Honestly, I can't find one photo of his where I'd say "Wow, I'd like to know how he does that".... All pretty average snapshots, Oftentimes When his composition and Exposure falls flat, he often resorts to his high contrast monochromes as his crutch to make up for it and conceal every unwanted aspects of that mediocre shot,. He can take pictures but I don't think he's got an extraordinary eye for photography

I mean, I do think he is a good photographer and there are a lot of good photographers on KZread. In the end, it's all about preferences and taste. He's done a great job of growing his channel but he seems to have some personal issues. He's done a good job marketing I agree, but he's stuch in something that can't change...Thank you my friend

I watch both for different reasons. I'm genuinely surprised he took a shot like that and its a fairly immature thing to do. I've enjoyed both him and Kai for years. I've never watched one more than the other. Im not saying Jared needs to like what Kai does but to take shots at him for no reason is a little odd.

How long have you been watching Fro? Dude is the most judgemental and egotistical dude on YT. "I NEVER crop" "cropping is for bad photographers" etc... I still value some of his opinions regarding reviews, but the dude always took shots at other photographers, amd IMO, he is OK, but nothing revolutionary.

@LaneLGibsonEntertainment Yep. He has great insight into variations of cameras and brands, but that's simply due to the access he gets from his channel. I've always found him to be overly egotistical and highly judgemental of others. I'm not at all surprised he'd say something negative about someone else... even for me, his channel is the last one I check these days. Too much clickbait, too much ego. Kai has a WAY better channel. I can watch Kai all day. Hard to keep Fro going for more than an episode or two. The "I'm the best at everything always, DUH" attitude just kinda sickens me after an episode. Still good info in pieces, tho.

100% correct and Bare in mind that Frono is no a Pro he is a Product Announcement Person. Kai is more actual hands on with a fun and a great sense of human. ps; look it up Jared background prior youtube and how he got his sponsors bases on... it will make it all sense in the end.

Well, considering he's been able to get a seasons pass to photograph the Phillies and the PBA tour and follow around Presidential candidates and get on the grounds for rocket launches in Florida, I'd say he's covering the professional part of photography fairly well......

@@derbagger22 Any YT with a descente Views and shoot the kind of sport would be a pass. “ A any promo is a good promo” I don’t hate the guy, but I don’t think he even shot any Campaign o POS for any Brand. In fact is quit lame from his part to pick on another fellow YT which has more flamboyant and superb sense of Human and don’t take himself to seriously and that’s my opinion.

I like both guys for different reasons. Jared has a sniff and wind test he does to be funny so he really doesn't have a leg to stand on.

another problem I have with Jared is how much he disregards less privileged enthusiasts when it comes to gear reviews. The amount of times ive heard him glaze the canon 28-70 f2… im pretty sure that lens costs more than my entire setup. I like my sony gear and Im tired of hearing this guy act like the overpriced canon gear is the only right choice.

That's my problem with most of them is they make it seem like your older equipment is trash...

You really need to look up Greg Cazillo, the two of them started together in Philadelphia (I believe) where Cazillo did all the work and got none of the benefits and polin just kept hiring new production lackeys who actually do all of the work. I wonder how many of his lackeys actually stuck around or are compensated properly.

I've attended a workshop of his in Seattle a number of years ago and I did get some value out of it and felt he had decent skills as a photographer. Also, his current series he's shooting with a large format camera with MLB is super inspiring and I'm loving his images. I do get it about his channel being a bit over the top, I tend to look at his reviews of products I'm already interested in.

Yeah, it messes me about when I hear people with an ego talking down on someone out of obvious jealously. Have some decorum and humility. Just talk about the cameras, give photography tips and advice, and leave other people's names out of your mouth. That's not why I'm watching you. He's gotten on my nerves back in late January too when he shared lowkey "political" stuff on his Instagram. Very few in the comments saw past the smoke and mirrors and knew why he was sharing some specific images. I won't go into detail about it because I'm not trying to talk about him or throw him under the bus. But it left a bad taste in my mouth. You want some KZreadrs to get more personal with the audience when the stories are not put-downs to others, negative, and you can learn something from it. But once they bring their pessimist personal opinions into the mix, I'm like, "Okay, I've heard enough."

Oh I didn't know about all that, I kind of had stopped watching him for some time. I just couldn't someone would hate on Kai. I mean it's clear what his channel is and he's not pretending to be something else! Yeah it doesn't take much for me to clik off a video these days...

Fro gonna fro. I remember him from back when he was still filming vids in his dad's backyard. I stopped watching him many years ago after he did a review of a Fuji lens and said it sucked when the reality was, he had no idea how to use the cam properly and had the AF set all weird. After a massive thrashing in the comments by Fuji fanboys I believe he retested the lens and said it was good lol. I am of the mind that if you are going to review something you best do your research on the product first and know what you're talking about before shilling it to the masses. I've always like Kai from back in his DRTV days. Always viewed him as an entertainer more than a reviewer.

There's a lot of shilling going on these days unfortunately. IMO it's out of hand and commercialized! They sound like used car salesman!

Fro knows “schtick.” We all do what we gotta do to get clicks. And yes, I’m jealous that my hair stopped growing like that about 50 years ago - about the same time I gave up my elevator shoes and boom boxes. But if anyone’s serious about camera reviews, allow me to recommend Dustin Abbott, for the “clinical” side of things.

Kai is great. I met him in real life at the UK Photography Show about 300 years ago. He was really busy but still spared some of his time for little old nobody me. A genuinely lovely man.Don't know why anybody would say any different.

Used to enjoy the FroKnowsPhoto channel back in the early days. I stopped watching though when he and Greg Cazillo had a falling out. I quickly realised that Greg was the far more knowledgeable photographer and we always insightful And helpful with balanced critiques. Jared was just the loud and obnoxious front man. It got annoying real quick after Greg left.

he can have his opinion I guess. But I've seen several of Fro photos that kinda sucked too. I guess the better one is whoever is having the most fun and being the most effective. Maybe it's this guy Kai, maybe it's this guy Jared. When it comes to street photography, any photo of something is probably passable and only subjectively good or bad. Most people buying the cameras don't have the time or inclination to be professional sports photographers. So if a review by Kai of a $400 camera does better than a Jared review of a $10,000 lens, I mean that kinda works out right?

The clickbait thing is rife in youtube unfortunately, but you soon figure out which channels rely on clickbait views and then just avoid them. FKP was one of the first "photography" channels I followed but I soon got bored of his ego and just his general demeanor and unsubbed his channel, These days I sub smaller, more honest channels - or ones that have high production but with sincerity :)

You're spot on...unfortunately the elegance of photography has been overshadowed by the need for "likes' and "subscribers." There are only a handful of photographers, who actually utilize KZread to showcase their artistic and breath taking compositions. Mr.Polin's KZread channel is informational news when it comes to the latest and greatest camera equipment, which I believe is his true niche. Unfortunately nothing really entertaining with regards to the art of photography, just product review.

I hate how Jared keeps dissing Panasonic and the L-Mount Alliance (which he jokingly derides), despite Panasonic absolutely killing it in video capability.
