    For those who think putting a spacer in between the 5/8" attachments for "future proofing" a 1' rack don't. It takes longer and just frustrating to align things. Time and getting quality work done are priorities. Source: someone who did that. 🤣 Edit: Thank you Kurt for this video. Not sure if you've already made one but a video on garage gym considerations, mat placement, section for plywood, hanging bags, storage and scalability would be nice.

    This is all just based off of marketing. 1 inch holes are marketed as the superior product, but there's no reason 5/8 inch attachments have to be lower quality. There's no reason 5/8 inch racks have lower end racks other than the fact that these companies would like to upsell you a 1-inch rack. Strength is largely just a product of how much metal is engaged. A 5/8 inch pin will be weaker, but it's sitting in a rack with much more steel around it

  • @TheKurtlocker

    @TheKurtlocker

    I’m not making a case for 5/8” being weaker as far as J cups and a rack. There are some attachments that are weaker such as a roller attachment which is why 5/8” rollers have to come with an instead of just a nut to thread on the end. Because they are viewed as the top of the line, I typically recommend folks just go 1” so they don’t end up with a bunch of unusable attachments when/if they upgrade.

    lot of good points here. 5/8 is probably good enough for just about anyone, you just aren't getting the nicest accessories. You should do a series about rack depth, 43 vs 30, 4 post vs 6 post, Traditional 6 post vs batwing 6 post.

    I agree with pretty much all of your points Kurt. I have never seen an advantage with the WS hole spacing on my PR-4k and since it is the older version with 6" hole spacing on the sides, it screws up usability for certain accessories like the leg roller. There are also limited options for straight through leg rollers in the 5/8" size, as you've noted. Good topic and video man.

    Great video! Thank you for always putting out informative videos. I think the one thing about 5/8" + west side spacing does better than 1" is adjusting safeties. You can get the height to be at least 1" more precise. This is good for things like rack pulls since you can do progressive RoM a little more gradual, dropping the safeties 1" instead of having to drop them 2". Aside from that, I think it doesn't make too much of a difference. I see most companies make options for both these days, thankfully! I wish I could have gotten a 1" but it wasn't easy to acquire one in Canada back in early pandemic days. I actually worked really hard to source one in Canada and got the worst of both worlds: 5/8" without westside spacing! I was happy to source it to a random guy here in Canada (gaine fitness), but I wish I could have gotten 1" instead. The nice thing, is I got the same spacings on the side as the front. Win/lose

It might be overrated but I do like that feature, especially when I’m benching heavy and I dial it in so I don’t touch with the bar yet still have room not to get crushed. I use my rack for squatting, benching, pullups, and plate storage - and I don't need versatility beyond that, but if you're an attachment junkie, definitely you're better off getting a rack with 1" holes, I fully agree. I like how Eleiko has done their hole spacing on the Prestera line: 5/8" spaced 1" apart through the entire upright (not just the bench area) and EVERY hole is numbered, so you never have things misaligned. If you use the gliding attachments that go up and down the rack with a pop pin, it's extremely quick and convenient to change setups.

    As always, good video. I agree with all of this. I have a rogue monster lite. If i were to do it all over again I'd get 1" holes. I'm way to invested already in 5/8'' and would lose out trying to sell this and re-buy everything in 1''. Westside hole spacing IS a gimmick I agree. The leg roller attachment you brought up is huge. I have to constantly re-adjust things to have room to flip it down to secure it. For anyone watching this or seeing this, do what Kurt says and just pay the extra coin to go 1''.

    If you buy into the whole notion of 3x3 racks as being adult erector sets, the fact that there’s 2” spaced holes on all 4 sides makes it far more feasible to design very esoteric rack layouts and configurations that aren’t just simple a simple box. Wings to the sides, isolated posts for things like the Bulletproof Isolator, shelving for dbs or plates, etc etc. the ability to build out in any direction from every upright is massive.

    Good points, here is one other consideration for 5/8th inch For the Isolator, west side hole spacing is useful for adjusting movements like preacher curls and calf raises. At least for me 2 inch jumps can make getting into position or the start of the movement awkward Rogue really messed up the ML Trolley arms V1 and V2. Honestly trolley arms are more of a statement piece until some company comes out with fully articulating with custom colors that isn’t going to be close to $2k with 3rd party mods

  • @TheKurtlocker

    @TheKurtlocker

    I dont have any issues with 5/8th or 1 inch but both comes with pros and cons. I would honestly like to own both depending what attachment I need. Everyone comes in different sizes so all holes sizes matter 😂. I own a rogue hr2 half rack with a custom rogue weight stack built in. It does everything I need specifically gor training. The 5/8 holes are more than enough for the 99% average joe and the 1inch is more for the intermediate to advanced hom gym gurus imo. You still get the same work done whether its 5/8 or 1inch. If need a sorinex bulldog attachment or bullet proof isolator then I would go 1inch because im applying my own body weight in that attachment but I would just get a single 1inch hole upfront bolted to wall studs for that purpose so no need for another power rack. I do like the options of having multi holes for westside spacing and the cost effectiveness for just training the big 3 plus more. nothing is future proof imo because the 1.25inch hole maybe the next niche size we dont really need.

    As an old guy in and out of gyms for 30+ years, there were no real 1" racks in any (non pro level/college/etc) in any gym that normal people went to. heck even by late aughts it was still mostly 2x3's with smaller holes (no idea what size but it wasn't 1") 1000's of people used those day in and out. Heck go look at 70's bodybuilders videos those aren't 1" holes. Equipment today at all levels is massively overbuilt and way better than at any time. for 90% of people, 5/8th is just fine and significantly cheaper including all the attachments. more work, less glitz. But heck buy what you want.

    One thing about Westside, it's totally possible to do it on a 1" 3x3 rack. I did it on mine (DIY 3x3 metal one, not a wood thing). I just don't understand why they don't do it?! Just do the freaking holes closer to each other without making it too thin and it will hold! 11ga is quite sturdy. I do prefer Westside spacing, I'm very short and sometimes I would feel more comfortable in the bench. But it works without it...! The 1" pin is indeed better, I do most of my gym stuff and with 1" I just put a huge pin and call it a day. With a 5/8... That would require more stuff and more work. But yeah, if you're just lifting and looking for little to no attachments on your setup, the 5/8 is good enough. And let's face it, most Powerrack are overkill and will last a lifetime. The more I invest in my gym, the more I like "simple" stuff. Again good content!! Keep on!

They threw me a curve-ball advising (effectively) should be good with near any metric 3x3 uprights with 11/16 diameter holes. "What? Not 5/8, then how do they fit the X3 rack,?"" Oh, yeah, duh, that makes sense. Have fun trying to fit a 5/8 pin in a 5/8 hole. Are attachments either 5/8 or 1 inch? Yes. Do the racks have 5/8 or 1 inch bolts? Yes. (or rounded to metric). Do they have 5/8 or 1 inch holes? No, they're bigger. Is Westside hole spacing 1 inch? Yes, meant for 5/8 hardware.
