What a brilliant gift from God you have Pastor John! The "learn to love yourself do you can love others" has always bothered me. I've seen it to excuse narcissism, arrogance & it has not done any good.

indeed, with Ya Sister! For every look at ourselves We take, take ten looks at CHRIST; i like to call it "cross-eyed". What works best for me, hoping to edify, and what i have soaked up from Holy Scripture, by GOD'S Grace through GOD'S Faith, Bestowed upon me in The HOLY MESSIAH Applied by The HOLY SPIRIT, In YESHUA, to the Glory of GOD The HOLY FATHER;) Similar to the image Johnathan Edwards gave us, always having one eye in hell. You do need to love yourself. Jesus says to love your neighbor as you love yourself. Phillippians says to "not only look out for your own interests, but also look out for the interests of others". Paul knew that it was a good thing to look out for yourself, but you also need to look out for the needs of others. Both are needed to be a healthy Christian. John is wrong here unfortunately. Suicide victims don't love themselves at all. That is why they kill themselves.

I feel like it's a healthy, godly self love/esteem vs being narcissistic or "looking out for number 1". There would seem to be a line before being self-centered or egotistical... If that works.

Heavenly father, in line with the difference John Piper makes between self-love and self-esteem I declare I love myself rightly because I have self-esteem in the name and by the blood of Jesus Christ, Yeshua, at all times and eternity! "Be as concerned about the happiness and well being of others as you are about your happiness and well being" I think the issue is that some people don't care about their well being properly. When I was addicted to Opiates I chased them down because I didn't want to hurt. I knew how i would feel without them. So my friends who where also addicted and where without a fix, I would share so that they wouldn't be hurting. Was I justified in this because I was "loving as I love myself" I don't think so because ultimately I was contributing to not only my own imprisonment to the drugs but to someone else's.

You learn that by placing who you are in God and knowing what he says about you.

If the Bible assumes that we are born loving ourselves, what about the people who don’t love themselves or struggle with self esteem? How do they rectify the self hate that they feel?

He mentioned this in the video. Those who self hate are still trying to love themselves they just don’t know how to properly love. Love is not just what we do, but why. They are doing but have the wrong whys, due to selfism.

but isn't it quite easy to understand? Love others as you love yourself, if you love yourself much you should love others much too, and if you love yourself a little love well unfortunately you'll probably love others to that measure but do the best you can. Pride and arrogance are different matters though, those things aren't related to love.

Jon Abrahams the only thing is we do not love ourselves little. Every decision we make is for our happiness and to avoid harm. We love ourselves much, at all times. So if we are to love others in that same way, we should seek to serve and make others comfortable and happy and keep them from harm.

This is of our times biggest problem. We love our self so much and this is the main reason why so many people feel bad and marriage and relationships break down. Many do not understand that the same sin that Lucifer committed against God is the same sin as self-love.

No one can agree on what self-esteem means. It's how you look at yourself. You look at yourself like you look at anything else, you see it for what it is. Stop using unnecessary new terminologies to confuse people.

Self love is of selfishness and self Esteem is of Pride.

Benito John Genito Jr. it’s not selfish to love yourself. Every time you feed yourself to keep yourself alive, you love yourself and are doing well. Anything can be distorted and become sin or idolatry, but at the base level, loving yourself isn’t a sin.

@@itsHillaryJane yes,it is Good to love yourself for no one can ever say that he or she didn't love himself or herself.but if you have more than enough and you are more to self than your Poor and Needy Neighbor,then it is of Selfishness.Just be Contented with What is Enough and Share to the Poor and Needy that which is more than Enough,... if Truly You Love the Lord God Jesus Christ.

I don't love myself.... There is nothing for me to love about myself except for God who lives in me. I care so much for other people that I will hardly ever refuse them. The first things and last things I think about is what I have to do to serve as a member of my community, and my family. I have to force myself to take a day off because if I don't I can't function to help others. I don't matter, other people matter. That's one of the few reasons I have to live. Because I have to live for others.

@@wow.za. not really.... I attempted suicide last week and I cut myself. I am a devoted believer but sometimes I think that doing that would free others from having to worry about my mental illness.

Also, I'd just like to clarify that in Psalms 55:22 and Romans 8:1-2, God clarifies that he cares about you and your life, to and he genuinely wants the best for you, and for you to come to have an abundant and fulfilling life.
